cthonicseraph said: Question: Do you find it harder to build a world from scratch, or to build characters and situations in our own world? Like Furies of Calderon vs. Dresden Files (if I can use my extensive Jim Butcher knowledge for anything).
I don't think I've tried anything terribly close to our world to count, Shae's story is just such a distant, distant future that anything goes, and Edie's story is alternate history but I take an... obscene amount of "creative liberties", since steampunk is such an anachronistic mess anyway. Though I would say its still been the most challenging so far, because pulling handy answers out of my butt whenever its convenient won't fly. AU earth stuff is going to usually need SOME basis in our history and geography. Which also means some history or geography nerd is out there ready to point out mistakes and glaring omissions. Scary :|
And totally not the question but I definitely prefer Dresden Files (major bias from living in Chicago for four years, he does it so well!), they're funny and exciting and I enjoy his takes on mythology and magic. I couldn't get into Furies- it's pretty usual srs bsns style of dry high fantasy that bores me to tears. Also its kinda rapey
pooryorickdraw answered your question: I know AEM takes place in a sort-of magical Ottoman Empire, but does that mean other “real” countries exist in the setting?
Yeah... other than having my story take place in a tiny kingdom that splits off from the Ottomans, not much is different politically, mainly because it's outside the scope of the story. If I had it spanning more countries I'd definitely consider what might be different. I know WWI happened a lot sooner, and technology would advance faster with the ability to harness a really powerful versatile energy source (MAGIC). Steampunk is based on the idea that there was an energy revolution in technology and analog/mechanical tech, instead of what happened in our reality where there was a digital/information revolution. I figure there's still roughly a British Empire, Austro-Hungarian, Spanish, etc. But yeah other than having rough ideas of where different characters come from and whether or not its plot relevant, there's a bit of geography gap in that area. One that... kinda makes me want to work on it...
I dug into my hoard of cheap wigs and cheap kanekalon for styling practice and I'm pretty happy with the result. It definitely confirmed in my mind the value of starting with higher quality wig and hair fiber though! The black fiber absolutely refused to hold a curl. I want to try another fluffy shoujo style again soon. Its very tedious work, I tied in about 3 packs of extra long jumbo braid, but also calming, so its been the only type of crafting I've been able to manage lately. Been slowly stumbling my way out of a 6month+ funk due to cross country move and difficulty adjusting despite having moved a gazillion times in my life... I think Im pretty good at moving but that doesn't mean its actually easy :\ I'm doing much better but better =/= good. Still working on that. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwr8nXkDxtL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p70ktgej1d86
working on a color based battery life indicator, just got the colors mapped to analog input yaaaaay
I swear I didn't know this existed until I decided to googlehunt tablet pcs with wacom digitizers, and it's as glorious as it sounds. It's not without drawbacks (windows7 has very decent tablet pc tools, but I'm having a hell of a time trying to get pressure sensitivity AND multitouch working at the same time) but I'm just so happy to have a computer again asshdjkashdjahsd I CAN COLOR AGAIN
Another commision, D&D Tiefling! I was torn between overdoing the fog and... not overdoing it. Did I succeed? Psh I dunno, I like it though.
I've got the ongoing severe project ADHD where I sketch a rad idea and draft a pattern or two and start hoarding materials and then... float to the next shiny idea like a cartoon character following the scent of fresh-from-the-oven windowsill pie. :P Screenfaced expressive robot is on costume bucket list, one evening on a whim I sketched them out on my headform and uUUgh I wanna make it but when will I?? Dunno. Need more LEDs. I feel like I'm in work/school purgatory. I can't manage full time school but it means I'm just gonna be in school for what feels like forEVER! AND I'm still so got damn tired. Came home from closing shift last nite, stayed up late panic studying for a programming test this morning, I DID OK ON THE TEST THO YEEEEAHBOOOOII, now I'm gonna pass out for a quick nap before work today fnghfgh ZZzzz. I'm ok tho just a lil moody that I gotta take things so slowly and Im STILL exhausted by it. Still thinkin about the irony of persuing robotics/engineering education after getting kicked out of top robotics school over decade ago (mind you, arduino didn't exist back then and hooooolymoly this stuff is so much easier now! wowowowow) Programming still so hard tho UGH. But I stay motivated when I get ideas like above and know that I may actually have skills to make it real sooner rather than laterrrr
Costume DUMP because I had to move and put most of my stuff in storage so I don’t know when I’ll be able to resume work on this :C Also cos I was CUTE
The fiber optic HAIR is 110% of the reason I wanted to cosplay her in the first place. DREAM WIG, still can’t fully believe I’m making it happen… tho uh. You know how no amount of planning can replace what you learn by doing and gaaawsh there are. Many. Things. I would like to do differently. And I’m nowhere near done but also too far along (and too over budget) to start over, eeeeegh.
It’s a 168 neopixel led matrix controlled by an arduino pro mini. Also have a few attinys to control a servo (wiggly robot antenna 8D), and some sound-reactive led circuits, and just, so many other things I have been banging my head against desk all year tryna make this stuff work, tbh the biggest challenge has been figuring out how to power it properly, and uh, safely…?? I learned a LOT about how batteries work this year let me tell you
Final outfit will be visible from SPACE
I posted on your deviantart.. I found a company on ETSY using your TEAM TARDIS image to make iPhone covers off of.
Man I know someone was using that pic for iphone cases on redbubble and selling them for FORTY bucks too. Possibly the same asshole. I dont even have time to deal with thieves cos when Im working my shifts are 13+hrs/day, many of the online sales services have convoluted and hassly reporting procedures, and its just a big game of whack-a-mole. I dunno, I'm always resisting putting gigantic hideous watermarks on my work but this is what'll keep happening if I don't. I don't make a living off my art so it hurts me less than it could, but people like this steal from anyone so that doesn't even matter. The irony here is the double-infringement of stealing fan art of all things! I've gotten requests to sell prints of that piece but I won't. And scumbags come in to fill the gap. I'm ranting I guess. I go long periods of time without sharing my work but stuff like this evaporates any regret I might feel. I honestly dont have the energy or time to deal with this stuff so I'm not sure what the solution is :(
questionstar.org & questionstar@deviantart. I like to make art, friends, costumes, trouble, and history this is an art/creativity/rambling blog where I complain about art more often than I actually post it!
