we set the scene at indian wells, 2022. daniil has become the first world no. 1 after literal decades of big 4 tyranny and proceeds to lose his mind completely for the rest of the season, but we didn't know that yet. he flops out of the tournament early and ig earlier than the flight he booked to miami bc he stays back in iw for a few days at a swanky tennis club where like RICH rich ppl r playing there n stuff.

so he's having a practice match w cilic at this country club, and flopping, and losing his mind completely. he starts getting more and more frustrated and hitting balls out of the court, just sends balls flying everywhere and gilles is SO embarrassed like omfg not in front of these rich ppl. so he says umm daniil maybe Don't do that, it's okay, we're in practice, it's rly not that serious, etc. and daniil turns around and goes 'OH so you DON'T want me to WIN????' and gilles, like a horse girl whispering soothingly to a sickly abandoned horse they're planning to put down for its own good, points out, 'but daniil, if you keep hitting balls out of the court, there won't be any balls left for you to win with.' and daniil goes 'oh. yeah. ur right.' and calms down instantly. and wins the match.

A scene from Indian Wells 2023. Daniil Medvedev, playing against Alexander Zverev in the fourth round, falls and rolls his ankle halfway through the second set. Although trailing by a set, and in such pain it is several moments before he can get up off the ground, he gets his ankle taped, plays on, and somehow wins the match. Five days later, he would make the final against Carlos Alcaraz.

I started this right after IW 2024 thinking I would need about two weeks (lol). All told, it took me about two months, working almost daily for about 2-3 hours each day.
