they call mary the ribbon girl because she walks the tightrope with satin in her teeth and blood in her shoes, bows tied at her wrists like shackles, ankles bound in silk like a gift someone forgot to open. she’s all glitter and spit and half-laughter, more bruises than skin. the circus calls her a marvel. the posters say delicate. the men in the front row say please. she just grins, pink tongue flashing, and says nothing. her hands shake when she climbs the ladder but you’d never know it. they only see the ribbons. they only ever see the ribbons.
backstage smells like piss and sawdust and sugar gone sour. she sews the bows onto her thighs like armor, like decoration, like camouflage. there’s meat in the freezer that doesn’t belong to any animal. her dressing room door doesn’t lock anymore. the bearded lady went missing two weeks ago and no one talks about it. she paints her lips red and sharpens her teeth on the mirror’s edge. she says fuck grace and bites the ringmaster’s hand when he touches her shoulder. he doesn’t touch her again. smart man. or maybe just scared. she eats her dinner raw now. eats it slow. like she wants it to scream.
in the ring she spins like a weapon wrapped in velvet. a boy in the second row throws a rose and she catches it with her mouth. spits the stem out into the dirt and keeps walking. her ribbon slips, just a little. someone sees the scar beneath it and claps louder. they always clap louder. freak, they whisper. miracle. monster. miracle. she thinks they’re all synonyms anyway. she waves, bows, smiles. someone else goes missing that night.
the next morning, her lipstick is smeared and there’s blood on her sheets and the lion won’t stop snarling. she hums a lullaby with ribbons in her hair and fingers sticky with marrow. the posters say nothing. the posters never say anything at all.
