"unracist those motherfuckers" vs what is said about sammie's family's church... i know what you are. how about the themes of colonialism and abusive religion that remmick perpetuates. how about remmick's co-opting of black culture. how about remmick paying no regard to a young and gifted black man's autonomy because he wants his gift to serve him. "i want your stories, i want your music"— i do not think painting remmick as this kumbaya singing advocate of peace and equality was the message in this movie, but showing that racism is not just klansmen who say the hard r and lynch black people (which is essentially what remmick was doing as well). even the music he plays says this— the blending of cultures as sammy transcends time with his music, you see all sorts, but remmick is solely focused on white music, his irish heritage is his only focus in his music. "unracist those motherfuckers" no! he just made them a different form of racist! juxtaposition lol.
also michael b jordan as a blood-soaked sweating shirtless vampire thank u ryan coogler. thank u god.
the comparison of the Irish experience to the Black experience, finding out that Remmick comes from a time when the Irish were colonized... while still acknowledging that he was able to use that privilege to escape the vampire hunters... and the first thing he did was un-racist those fuckers in the home he ran in to.
and the absolute juxtaposition of Sammie escaping the vampire hivemind with his life, only to go back home to the church where he is expected to give up the music of his life to assimilate into his father's church
Ryan fuckin Coogler the man that you are
i'm not going to shut the fuck up about this movie
Back home, Nana's band had hordes of fans. She was a local celebrity.

everything just really comes down to how I wasn't a person for most of my life. by which I mean I did not consider myself a person. it made such a profound impact on the way I navigated the world & yet standing on the other side of it I could hardly explain it to you

i realistically don't care about fics or whatever, people r gonna have problematic faves. i'm literally a lestat luvr. what bothers me is this, the braindead justifications people r gonna make instead of just... yeah... he was also racist. just a different brand of it. hes ugly too but thats besides the point
it really frustrates me to think about how people are inevitably going to take Remmick’s one (1) singular statement about how much he resents the way the Irish were colonized and forcibly converted to Christianity and use it as fuel for “actually he had a point” and “he was right actually” and “he’s not really the villain here” posts, when the whole point is that Remmick is, through the vampiric hive mind he’s creating, forcibly assimilating people into yet another manipulative and parasitical system.
he’s perpetuating a cycle that he claims to hate and resent, and I think the movie is pretty damn clear about the fact that he doesn’t see anybody as valuable or useful to him except as prey and as pawns—otherwise he would just, you know, focus solely on people who actually consent to being turned. but he looked sad in that one scene and he’s an apparently attractive white cis man so people are gonna bend over backwards justifying all the harm he did.
