It was a mess, you were a mess and this whole moving thing now seemed like one of the worst decisions of your life. Carrying boxes up and down the seemingly endless stairs was one thing, but having to unpack these boxes was another.
By the time you got up to your floor again, your legs were trembling and you cursed yourself for not taking up the position of a cardio buddy for your dear friend Pandora, but alas, living here will probably be a great substitute for that. Walking up to your door for hopefully the last time today, you searched your pockets for the keys, finding them in the back pocket. As you were about to unlock your door, the keys fell to the floor and your whole body shook, the air almost leaving your lungs.
The reason? The door next to yours just swung wide open, spitting out what is presumably your, or rather, one of your new neighbors. This sudden stunt was accompanied by yells coming from inside the apartment, “Well go and get it back! I don't wanna see you returning without it! You know how much it means to me!”
“Listen, I really didn’t mean to leave it there!” The door was slammed shut, leaving little room for the argument to continue. “I said I was sorry!” The man said, leaning against the door with a sigh of defeat.
“You sure know how to make a first impression, I’ll give you that." You said, crouching down to retreat your keys. He blinked twice and his brows furrowed in confusion. “I'm your new neighbor, if that wasn't clear.” You added as you stood up and finally got a good look at the man in front of you. “Oh, hi! I swear, this isn’t a regular thing,, Just, left my friend’s book at someone else’s place, bastard doesn’t even consider i could buy him a new one if i were to lose it, even though i didnt!” The man said, accompanied by an awkward chuckle as he ran a hand through his wavy black hair. His whole arm was covered in tattoos and you’re sure that from the looks of his ripped jeans, his legs were a similar canvas.
“You know, i think i would probably have the same reaction, you don’t go around losing your friend’s books after they trust you enough to borrow such.” The smile on your face was evident by the tone of your voice when you turned back to finally, unlock the doors to your new apartment. “Okay, yeah, but I didn't even lose it! I know where it is and I can just get him a new one if that one were to magically disappear!”
The door clicked open and your whole body relaxed as it was finally one step closer to sleep. “My books are like my children, what reaction would you expect if you just lost your friend’s newborn?” You stepped into your apartment, setting the things down on the counter and taking a moment to breathe. “Okay, i, for one, find that as a bizarre comparison.” Your neighbour said between stifled chuckles. “It’s not that far off though, is it?” You said, walking back and leaning on your doorframe. “Um, I'm Sirius, Sirius Black, by the way..” Sirius said as he held out his hand, taking his hand in yours, you murmured your name and dropped his hand, almost missing the warmth of it the second you let it go.
“Damn, who did I just shake hands with? Death?” Sirius said, recoiling his hand as if he just touched a burning stove. You raised your eyebrows with the hint of a smile on your face, “My hands aren’t that cold, you’re just hot.” The second those words left your mouth you regretted it, the grin on his face was immediate. “Before you say anything, NO i did NOT mean it like that.”
The urge to slam this door in his face was steadily growing stronger as it seemed he was only grinning wider now. Damn you for trying to make friendly conversation with one of your (hopefully) long term neighbours. “You think so?” Sirius said as he put his hands in his pockets, trying not to seem nervous. Fuck, why was he nervous?
“Don't you, I don't know, have some book retrieving to get to?”
You said as a last ditch effort to get him not to focus on the horrible blunder which left your mouth earlier, already sure that they would definitely haunt you in your dreams later.
“Shit, you’re right.” The smirk was wiped off his face, but the giddiness in his eyes stayed persistent as ever. He quickly faced the direction of the stairs and began speed walking to them, halting mid step. He slowly turned around and you wished you had already shut the door, bracing yourself for whatever he had planned next.
He turned around to speak, “And just so you know, I do think you might be hot aswell, just maybe not in the,, literal sense.” The comment rolled off his tongue naturally, but it was missing the lighthearted tone he carried throughout your short conversation.
You could feel your cheeks heating up, and by the expression on his face, he definitely saw. You shut your door quickly and slowly slid down the door to sit down, in need of something to ground you. “This is it, this is where I die, and a black hole swallows me whole, and I never have to face anyone ever again.”
There were many things infront of you, unpacking, getting used to the place (so you don't accidentally hit your hips against every corner and counter you can stumble upon), but this, this was the death of you. A charming, beautiful neighbor who you will no doubt encounter again, nope, this is it.
By some force of a divine being, you found the strength in your legs to get up and rummage through one of the cardboard boxes labeled clothing to retrieve your pajamas. Hoping to fall into a quick and merciful sleep which will NOT remind you of your encounter with Sirius Black.

You found yourself tossing and turning in bed, acknowledging it wasn't worth it when the brink of sleep escaped you yet again.
It became sort of a habit now, not being able to sleep and instead turning to wander the never-ending halls of Hogwarts. This habit started multiple years ago already. It was calming, in a sense. So many things, friend groups and professors changed in the time you were here, but you could always fall back on this, it never changed.
Whenever you snuck out of your dorm, it was clear you probably weren't gonna be able to fall asleep, but it was worth it for that moment of peace. Nothing could compare to it.
Your roommates grew used to those habits by now, you were thankful for their understanding even though you didn't really talk to them, to no one at Hogwarts, really.
Your brother always gushed about how amazing Hogwarts was, including the people. Whenever he came back for summer break you were instantly prepared for the flood of information you would get from him, he graduated a few years ago already, but you still looked back on how excited he was to share everything with you, yet you never really understood it.
Yes, Hogwarts really was a magical place, all the magic in that place sometimes even felt overwhelming. But you never actually fit into a certain group, you were quiet, always observing, people thought you were scheming things. As if. The only thing which could keep a mind occupied was astronomy, often lost in your own star constellations.
Opening the door of your dorm and stepping out quietly, the slight breeze from outside felt welcoming. You quietly tip-toed across the wooden floorboards in the common room, the only sound that could be heard was the quiet crackling of the fire no one ever really bothered to put out. You stopped for a moment, leaning against the cold walls and sighing. Not getting sleep so frequently really wasn't healthy, and it wasn't helping your academic scores either, but there was nothing you could do. You didn't want to ask Madam Pomfrey for more sleeping draughts, not wanting to admit to her, and yourself, that you really weren't getting better, but rather, worse.
Rising up from your slouched position against the wall, you slowly set out to the halls, occasionally sliding across the floor boards because of your socks, careful not to make unnecessary noise. Stepping out of the portrait hole, you continued your march down the endless stairs. The portraits were now empty, it was unusually quiet, but your pace never faltered.
Stepping out into the empty halls always felt so freeing, it was so quiet you could probably hear a pin drop. Because of this, every time your joints cracked, you mentally cursed your old man bones. The sound always spread across the hall in waves, leaving behind a slight echo for a short while.
From wandering out here so often, you knew almost every inch and corner of Hogwarts like the back of your hand. Being acquaintances with a prefect made it even easier, you knew who and where people were on patrol. You have basically memorised their schedules for your sake. It was a lot later after their rounds that you usually got out. But it wasn't common to see two prefects getting carried away doing,,, whatever really.
As you continued your stroll through the halls, you couldn't help but admire the candles floating around you, the candlelight always casted a soft glow around the place, it was pleasant to look at. If you focused on the lights for longer, you’re pretty sure the soft tap of steps around the corner would have gone unnoticed.
Before anyone can catch you, you quickly slid behind a statue with practiced ease. It was close, the steps now turned the corner and you notice it is a few pairs, probably close to three, accompanied by murmuring among the three.
“I find it hard to believe he just left in the middle of the night unprompted.”
the steps came to a halt, you could hear the conversation clearer now.
“Maybe he just needed time to himself?” a weaker, squeakier voice replied.
“Oh come on, you know Moony and his wolfiness, but he definitely would have had a reason.” a third, deeper voice said, accompanied by a chuckle.
“It's not impossible, but don’t you think it would have to be something serious for him to leave? Just like that? He never does that, he would probably wake Sirius if he needed someone.”
A collective sigh came from the three, the steps could be heard picking up again, in the direction of the stairs you came from earlier.
There it was, three boys, one with insanely messy short hair and his signature glasses, the second one with shoulder-length hair, which he cut a bit shorter after summer, and the last, short blonde boy who you shared Transfiguration with.
You knew them, of course you did. They were in the same house for Merlin’s sake, you never really spoke to any of them though. Their presence was loud and lively, there was never a beat of silence when they were around, which didn't really match you well.
You snapped out of your short daze to see them already long gone, stepping out from behind the statue and making your mind up on where to go next.
You had already known you would probably end up here, as you sauntered up the stairs of the astronomy tower, your steps making next to no noise, as you knew which stairs creaked and which didn't (with a lot of trial and error). Moving along the stairs with ease, you stopped dead in your tracks at the top. You heard a soft sound, it was a sob. You held your breath in anticipation if anyone was here, or if it was just your imagination. Then you heard another one, a quieter one. Holding your breath and turning to where the sound was coming from, your heart nearly shattered into pieces.
A boy, probably in your year as well, was sitting in the corner, back turned away from you. The sight was heartbreaking, he was shaking, the sobs could only be described as broken, sounding choked back, like if someone was fighting them really hard but could not keep it in anymore.
You stood like a deer in headlights, unsure of what to do. Would they tell on you for being here so late at night? Should you just leave them alone? Your heart melted into a puddle of sympathy and sadness, knowing they probably needed someone right now. You slowly made your way over to him and gently sat down by his right side. The boy noticed your presence, the sobs quieting down almost immediately.
You spoke first, your voice quiet in an attempt to not startle the boy more than your presence already has. “You go out here often?”
Turning to face the boy, you could see his eyes tinted red from crying, he sniffled. “Don't worry, i won't tell on you, i go here almost nightly myself” No response. “If you want, I can go. Everyone needs time to themself, and I am just now realizing I probably interrupted a time you wanted to be alone in, considering you went all the way here” You hurriedly blurted out, standing up so you can go again. This was probably shaping up to be one of the really awkward moments you would replay before sleep.
“Wait” you turned to face the boy “I-I, plea-” His voice cracked. “Please don't leave.” He said with a hint of urgency in his voice.
You made eye contact with him, his brown eyes standing out even in the midst of the night. “Okay, I'll stay. I didnt wanna go back down there anyway, you’re Remus, right?” The boy nodded in response. “Your friends were looking for you, I overheard them on my way here. They sounded pretty worried.” You said as you sat down, at arms length to the boy. He sighed, “Yeah, that sounds pretty much like them. I can't blame them though, I have been a bit off recently that they for sure noticed it.”
You chuckled, “Well I'm not gonna be prying any information from you.” Laying down on your back, you looked out to the starry sky. “Do you know anything about the stars?” Remus followed you, laying on his back next to you. He was glad you weren't looking at him, he for sure looked like a mess, teary eyes and messy hair. He ran a hand through his hair and wiped at his eyes again. “Uh- Padfoot- sorry, Sirius sometimes talks about them, but i don't know much ... Not like I wouldn't be interested! I just, never really had the chance.”
You tried to suppress a chuckle at his stumbling, ultimately failing to do so, earning you a glare from Remus and a soft kick to your shin. “Ah! My heart! And my leg! Remus, you have deeply wounded me!” You sprawled out on the floor, dramatically putting your hand over your heart, failing to suppress the smile from his shenanigans. “And here I thought no one could surpass the dramatics of Sirius Black, I think he now has great competition” He turned to you, with a slight smile, only illuminated by the light of the moon and stars. The change in his mood was sudden, but not unwelcome. You were just happy it seemed that his mind wasn’t lingering on whatever upset him earlier.
“Well good thing for you-” you said as you pointed your finger at him accusingly “I heed great knowledge about astronomy! And for someone so uncultured, I could possibly spare some time of the day so that he may learn all about it!” He sighed, the smile on his face growing wider “Tell me, just what can I do to stop you from talking like… this?” You grinned and looked back to the sky, replying “Ah, does my prosperous vocabulary trouble you?, I guess I can tone it down a little..”
The night was spent pointing out constellations and curious questions being thrown both ways. You wondered how you managed to avoid Remus for so long, seeing as you both spent time in the same places, and your interests overlapped seemingly everywhere. Unbeknownst to you, Remus felt the same. He found it easy to be in your presence. He knew the rest of his little group would endlessly question him about his whereabouts when he got back to them, but he didn’t seem to care about that, or anything else at the moment.
You completely drowned out his worries and he’d be damned if he let another opportunity slip through his fingers, simply because he felt unworthy.
