The days had seemed to blend together, Maddox only ever sure of the time, but not which day of the week it was. His head was haunted with the memories of the eidolons, the spirits that had seemed to life like, that had possessed faces of those they are not belonged to. Family members, friends, loved ones, enemies; they came flooding back to the streets of Corinth Bay, and left chaos in their wake. And he had seen them all. He had seen the anger in their eyes, the horror on their faces, and the cause of many of their deaths before him. It had left him shaken, weary and drained of the energy he had used in order to banish some of them back to the ethereal plane, to free those that had been tormented, even if for only a few minutes. He hadn’t even realized when the spell had been cast, banishing the eidolons back through the rift from which they came.

It was for this precise reason, that when he saw a man sitting on a bench, with spirits seemingly entirely too interested in him, Maddox approached quickly. His intention was to use what energy he still had to banish them, to send them away for a moment of reprieve — but the sight of the green scale, seemingly the object of the spirits’ attention, had him stopping short. A shiver ran the curve of his spine, his eyes transfixed on the item as it caught the light in an unique way. “What is that?” The question slipped from his tongue too quickly, his voice soft in the open air. There was something magical about it, but it felt — different, ancient.

“Nothing really, I don’t know,” quickly flew from the cubi’s lips as he closed his hand over the object of interest. Panic hung in his voice and in his expression, not understanding why he felt the sudden need protect it from anyone else's view. Even his dreams managed to consist of the item in some fashion, what little sleep he did get, and the bags under Silas’ eyes was evidence of both. He truly didn’t want to discuss it at all, especially with someone that just randomly found him on the street. Eidolon crowding them both as the energy fluxed.

Rapidly he realized this wasn’t the situation he wanted, not the position he wanted to be in, and continued to grip the scale. Though he couldn’t seem to bring himself to lie about it even when the feeling inside him screamed at him to do so. Assessing the situation, a darkness coming from the stranger that Silas hadn’t noticed before, he spoke, “I found it in my pocket, that happens at times in my line of work.” Well, that wasn’t completely true. Often he knew what was inside his pockets because he had purchased it, but the scale was different. It had shown up as if it was magnetized to the cubi and was unexplainable. Similar feelings vibrated inside his being and was reminded of a time when he was still human, picking up random objects of magical value to sell in his father’s shop. The same person floated around them currently and he forced himself to keep his charcoal hues away.

Holding her fingers up towards the sky, Ianthe appeared to be attempting to push the moon closer to Venus, squinting her eyes. Ianthe tilted her head back, blowing a billowy halo of smoke above head, “Venus and the moon are kissing.” Ianthe spoke to the space around her, to the walls with ears and the shadows who took solace in the dimly glowing ally that she had. “Smoke?” She asked before her death Ianthe would have never picked up a cigarette, but now- it seemed trivial- it wouldn’t be what killed her anyway.

“Aphrodite and Selene, correct?” Silas asked, only having come more into contact with the Greek gods as he had moved closer to the Mediterranean area. Some of it was still new to him and he hid that fact, only what he actually was. He nodded at the offer, “Yes, thank you.” His voice soft— warm even as he took the cigarette from her hand and lit it. Silence settling over them as they each looked up at the night sky, both clearly in their own mindscape.

“People have no taste.” The witch scoffed, cocking her hip and placing a lithe hand on it. “What’s that saying? Modern art is I could do that plus yeah, but you didn’t. Although in this case, I don’t think anyone should have attempted.” Calida approached the artist of the stand, purchased the art, and then threw it away right in front of her and the other convention goers. “Well, that takes care of that.”

image

Shock hung on the cubi’s face as he watched her hand over the cash and immediately chuck the artwork into the garbage. Sure— the art was complete trash and Silas couldn’t believe someone was even attempting to sell, but was it really worth the money just to throw it away? He stood in silence as she spoke, face still holding a look of surprise, and choked out, “Sure does.”

Noah had seen a ghost. Alright, so it wasn’t a ghost – it was just a man who looked a lot like his father from afar, and nothing like him up close. It had still shaken up Noah’s mind, that was already fragile enough lately, and caused him to search shelter through the next door he could find. Only when he had pushed the door shut with a loud banging sound did he realize he had invaded someone’s shop, and was staring right at the owner’s face, his own pale and frightened. “I’m so sorry.” The moment he realized how abnormal he had been behaving, he transformed his face into a smile. “I just – I thought I saw someone outside and then…” A weak laugh escaped him, and he shook his head as he ran a hand through his hair. “My mind’s playing tricks on me. I didn’t mean to ruin your door.” And he really hoped he hadn’t.

Noahkramer‌:

“Nothing I can’t fix,” tinges of surprise still hung in his voice, though the cubi’s expression remained calm as he looked over the stranger. Odd things had always happened around Silas and the shops he had managed to own over the years, so a terrified person running in was truly nothing new. War had allowed him to see more than what he wanted to be familiar with though the cubi knew that he was better off for it. The more Silas knew, the better when it came to life. Growing knowledge about the emerald scale, along with Eidolons vanishing from the streets, Silas was more paranoid than usual but he swallowed it. He moved casually towards him to glance over the door, jiggling the handle once he arrived and shrugged, “Seems fine.” But he couldn’t stop thinking about who— more like what, was outside that caused him to flee in the first place. Charcoal hues peeking outside the pathways to see if anything would come of it, but all he could see were faces of employees happy they were relieved of their evening duties.

Permanence wasn’t something Petra was used to. So, whenever she set out to find things to decorate her apartment with, she almost always did a one-eighty and left. Buying something meant she was actually looking at her apartment as a place she could call home, and that terrified her. The voice had drawn her away from a path down memory lane and Petra’s attention was on the other for a few heartbeats, looking him over. She wasn’t distrustful of the owner of the simple shop, but she also knew in a place like Corinth Bay, there was always more than meets the eye. “Several things,” Petra replied, short and less than sweet —- her usual tone. “Do you have anything built with minerals, any crystals?” That was her element, the constant she liked to surround herself with. “Good for decoration?”

image

A gentle nod came from the cubi as he moved closer to the counter top, hand signaling towards the front of his shop, “We have a few small pieces on that shelf there.” An honest phrase as the shelf really only offered trinkets; boxes with crystals as handles, agate replacement door knobs, geodes as cup holders, and various carved statues. But she had said several things, which mean she could be the right owner for— “ Unless you are looking for something a bit larger than that.” His smile continued as he walked around the counter, still keeping his distance to respect his customers space, “I’ve got a few slab style that could be wall mounted or rested.” However, Silas didn’t feel as though she was the type to desire something as generic as that. Even as a human it was easy for him to sense auras and pair objects with people. It was practically in his dna. Which left him with one last option and a long silent pause hung in between them, “It does still need some work, but could be a really nice table if you want to see it.”

Gabriel had idly wondered how Silas had fared during the entire ordeal, though the other incubus had drifted from his mind after their argument. He’d told himself that he didn’t need to take care of the other cubi in the city, not when he had his own issues to deal with – and with the exception of Kasandra. Fran, Silas, and Chris were going to have to just deal. Though that didn’t mean he didn’t care, it was just difficult for him to maintain any kind of balance in his personal life.

The sound of Silas’ voice only made him frown, the usual joy he felt seeing the other somewhat tampered by their last conversation. Setting the book down, he looked at his friend, “Being one of the only librarians here, I can take a break whenever I want.” He flipped the little sign around on the desk to say “on break,” looking at the other incubus expectantly. “Do you need something?”

image

Being ruthless and unfeeling was never in Silas’s dna. Even after all these years, along with the transition into an incubus, it was hard for him to altogether let go of the person he was in the past. He felt that now more than ever as the guilt was more prominent than before, charcoal irises locking onto Gabriel’s solemn expression, and gave him an empathetic look in return. Gabe wasn’t the one that had lied or acted out of his usual ways, Silas had. Now that the Kyun was mostly back to himself, bags still present under his eyes even with all the sleep, it was easy for him to stick with the path of patience. “I just want to apologize for the way I acted and treated you,” the words came out smooth and heartfelt. It wasn’t hard for him to admit when he had behaved in the wrong fashion, to confront the issue and take accountability, “A friend should never be treated so poorly.” Silas allowed the silence to take over from there, not wanting to add more onto what should be simple. He had overstepped his boundaries once and it was now in Gabriel’s hands to either forgive or keep their divide. How things had been since the two parted ways was hardly any of the fellow cubi’s concern and the destruction of the scale was information he would only give if asked.

An incubus is capable of recognizing furies. Ophelia knows this, and dislikes it heavily. So why is she hanging around one of their kind, again? The thought is slightly perplexing, and one she does not readily have an answer to. Perhaps it’s because she finds him interesting — of that she has no problem admitting. And incubuses were created to sow chaos and harm, and she hasn’t quite decided on how much of a threat he poses to the good people of the city yet, so maybe that’s it too. He visits the tea shop, she visits his knick knack store; it feels like a delicate game being played, each side sizing the other up and taking notes. Yet for all her reasons and excuses, the one she least of all wants to acknowledge is the simple fact that… well, she wanted to. And here they are now, standing in front of what appears to be a dart throwing competition, at a celebration she never would have dreamed about in her lifetime. Ophelia smiles and turns to her companion. “Well Silas, how’s your aim?”

image

So he was more than just a little curious about the tea shop waitress, the incubus was allowed the right. It wasn’t just that his senses would buzz the moment Ophelia would find her way around him, holding onto much of the same interest as himself, but the intrigue of who she was and what made her tick. They shared similar qualities and maybe that was part of it. Both quiet, but much like an iceberg— the two of them held many layers of depth underneath. “Rusty,” he replied honestly, grabbing for one of the darts and shifting his body for a good aim. Years had gone by since the last time the incubus had actually attempted a game such as this, but he tried anyway and watched as his dart missed the desired target. A defeated smile emerged as he turned to look at Ophelia, wondering if she was choking back a giggle and moved to let her continue the game. “Definitely much better at being moral support than playing the game, it seems,” Silas wasn’t all that upset about it, spending much of his life being on the outskirts looking in and finding comfort in the position.

kasandrarosales‌:

Feeding occurred every other day at regularly scheduled intervals, Kasandra would be damned if she existed for more than two days without sustenance. That was, after all, how she remained in this world now: existing. Not quite living, but allowing herself to be carried by the sands of time regardless of whether she desired the destination or not. Eternally fulfilling another’s vendetta without true choice in the matter, though if she were to dwell on that fact it might inspire a spectacular downward spiral. So she remained within the walls of her nightclub instead, peering out at the masses from behind her bar. Passing cocktails to potential prey who became lured in by the natural cubi appeal, yet none drew her attention. Not yet.

image

Not until him.

Alone, untethered, and searching for… What she couldn’t be certain. He gave the crowd a once over before requesting his own drink and she gently pressed a palm against the bicep of a bartender who moved to assist. Plucking the cocktail from his overworked hands, Kasandra personally delivered it to the awaiting customer, beryl hues trained upon his features with a practiced scrutiny. Just enough to lend itself to the possibility of interest. “I haven’t seen you in here before.”

Charcoal hues watched as the bartender finished up with his drink before a slender woman seemed to command otherwise. Fingertips gripping his cover, the item that would make him appear more human, and proceeded towards him. The cubi couldn’t help the alarm that he felt as her eyes latched onto his own, confidence exuding from her every pore. He was used to having to work a little more for his dinner. But as odd as it was that she managed to connect with him so eagerly, Silas’ hunger seemed to be winning. Instead of mulling over the moment, he proceeded on and tapped into the natural charm of being a cubi.

“I’ve been told in the past that I’m a bit of a wallflower,” which was partially true. A softness filled his expression, a smirk growing before taking a delicate sip. In reality, Silas had learned how to blend in without being much of a bother and most of his mortal life had depended on it. Even much of his cubi life had. Slipping into the background while the Korean War raged on, never getting caught while he voraciously sketched each scene. Then later as a cubi meant blending into each location as if you had always been there, while still managing to remove yourself without being noticed. “Maybe you just didn’t notice me,” he finished, leaning slightly on the bar and giving her his full attention.
