It's an honor to be of service 🫡
once upon a time, a friend of mine was writing a silly short horror story and she wrote this metaphor that went something like "its skin stretched over its bones like a balloon full of sticks" and that has stuck with me for years since. Almost every passing day I see something and think of the balloon full of sticks. The visuals, a silliness, the horror once you visualize past the silliness. Masterful. Thank you @souporwholock for writing the single best line in history.

I am filled with joy knowing you enjoyed what my fingers wiggled out :) it is something isn't it
It really is! And it's me who's filled with joy at how funny it was :)
Hang on let me imagine something real quick
Jon: [sweating, pointing at a conspiracy board] ... Do you understand now, Martin?
Martin: [crocheting with Jon's conspiracy board yarn]
Jon: WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT CROCHETING WITH THE CONSPIRACY BOARD YARN?
Martin: I made a bee :) it's for you
Jon: You!? You...!! [sighs] It's very cute, Martin. Thank you.
If you ever watch any animations I do (Ash Wynn on YouTube), just know, there's probably secret doodles out of frame. And they may be Doctor Who related
I work at a gas station at night. For whatever reason, generally, the store gets empty around 10 and then gets clusters of people at 11. So I, when I come back out from the back room and see people... I have not played Minecraft in MONTHS. For whatever reason, my first thought is
"the mobs have spawned"
Spock is NOT a fan of the talking Time Doughnut
WAIT THIS IS THE GREAT DEPRESSION AU ONE I FORGOT
All of this is true! But it reminds me of a common guilt I get at cons, not buying things I'd rather make.
Not COPY, there's absolutely no joy in that, but there's certain items I like making more than owning. For example, for needle felting I prefer doing more than owning it. I like the stabby stabby, and the creative process, more than I need another little creature on my shelf.
However.. I have NO interest in knitting, but I'd love a handmade beanie. And I can make pottery, but that doesn't stop me from buying handmade mugs! There's nuance here. This is an ecosystem where everyone buys things for different reasons and you're not morally obligated to get things you don't want. For any reason*
Even if it's "I'd rather be the artist"
This more accurately describes the good side of "I can make that," in my opinion, as it better voices the want to create more than the want to have. It's the creative process we sometimes seek, in the creation of something we wouldn't normally buy. That's okay. That's good. Make what you want to make, and buy what you want to buy!
*Unless you don't buy art because you'd rather make it with AI, then you can go feel terrible for that, if you are capable of remorse.
the thing about "i could do that" is that what people mean is that they can copy the finished product because the work of coming up with something and making it has already been done for them. every little creative decision has already been made and put into creating something, so "doing the same thing" is only doing the work of physically making something. but art doesn't just appear out of thin air. every little decision someone makes is part of the creative process. if you "can just do that" you would be doing it instead of just saying it. because the most essential part of making a piece of art is actually making it. you have to come up with it, decide to make it, and make it, for it to even exist. you can look at someone's works and think that on a technical level you can Do The Same Thing but that's not really true. because the work of unique creative choices for a particular piece you're looking at has already been done. some pieces are hard to make because they're very complex on a technical level, but every single piece that's created requires the essential work of coming up with it, making choices that are unique to you as an artist, and actually making the piece
I had to add this because it takes this from "that's not Tim" to "this has been Tim all along and everyone was imagining him wrong"
Wait a second...
Yes it does
