This means you guys have the time to watch a sci-fi cowboy movie from 1973. Listen. I need you to watch Westworld (1973) and just... get back to me. Tell me your thoughts. There is *no* fandom for this movie, and we need to build one. I finished, and I need fanfic but there is NONE. Simply, look
Let's build an empire.
Let's just take a moment to appreciate that horrifying shot of the TARDIS just standing there. Menacingly. Something I was not aware it could do and never want to see again
All of this is true! But it reminds me of a common guilt I get at cons, not buying things I'd rather make.
Not COPY, there's absolutely no joy in that, but there's certain items I like making more than owning. For example, for needle felting I prefer doing more than owning it. I like the stabby stabby, and the creative process, more than I need another little creature on my shelf.
However.. I have NO interest in knitting, but I'd love a handmade beanie. And I can make pottery, but that doesn't stop me from buying handmade mugs! There's nuance here. This is an ecosystem where everyone buys things for different reasons and you're not morally obligated to get things you don't want. For any reason*
Even if it's "I'd rather be the artist"
This more accurately describes the good side of "I can make that," in my opinion, as it better voices the want to create more than the want to have. It's the creative process we sometimes seek, in the creation of something we wouldn't normally buy. That's okay. That's good. Make what you want to make, and buy what you want to buy!
*Unless you don't buy art because you'd rather make it with AI, then you can go feel terrible for that, if you are capable of remorse.
the thing about "i could do that" is that what people mean is that they can copy the finished product because the work of coming up with something and making it has already been done for them. every little creative decision has already been made and put into creating something, so "doing the same thing" is only doing the work of physically making something. but art doesn't just appear out of thin air. every little decision someone makes is part of the creative process. if you "can just do that" you would be doing it instead of just saying it. because the most essential part of making a piece of art is actually making it. you have to come up with it, decide to make it, and make it, for it to even exist. you can look at someone's works and think that on a technical level you can Do The Same Thing but that's not really true. because the work of unique creative choices for a particular piece you're looking at has already been done. some pieces are hard to make because they're very complex on a technical level, but every single piece that's created requires the essential work of coming up with it, making choices that are unique to you as an artist, and actually making the piece
