Hi all,  I’ve gone ahead and (finally) uploaded last year’s one-shot comic “My Friend Jeffrey” to Tapastic (comics reader).  If I’m honest, I’m incredibly proud of myself for being able to pump out these 23 pages in basically a month and a half. The art surely isn’t my best, and there is notably more photograph splicing in this comic than in my more recent works I’ve yet to release. Though, despite my personal feelings of a lack in visual quality in this work, I don’t think I’ve felt so energized since drawing this one. With college continuing and my PBS (painful bladder syndrome) not having improved much at all, I feel lethargic and stagnant more and more, no matter how hard I work. My PBS truly does make exerting myself so difficult, but… let’s not go into my health status much currently. I try to not complain or make mentions of my health much lately because of the vast amount of criticism I’ve received from others about being “complaning,” “too much,” or “needy.”  nbsp; I share this comic in hopes of it bringing on some sort of ironic joy, though any reaction at all is more than I’d ask for. ...I feel like we could all have a more mature conversation about the nature of art if we realized that a lot of people view the answer to the question of "Is this art?" is based on "Do I perceive this as interfering with the production of art I make/want to see exist?"

Like, legit, that's the barrier for most people from what I can tell, and a lot of paradoxical behavior starts to make sense when you look at it like that.

With how much pain I’m in and how slow I have to draw because of it, I surely would draw worse than Yoshihiro Togashii at his lowest if I had a hefty deadlines. I remember reading in an interview with one of his assistants during Yuyu Hakusho: he walked in on Togashii in tears on the floor, heating pad on his back and pillow under his belly, but still drawing manga. Togashii-sensei’s back pain got so bad and he just kept drawing manga. That’s a real hero there. He made two of the best shonen manga of all time. I love HxH’s “bad” art work more than anyone because I can feel that pain when I’m reading it. I really understand that pain Togashii is in, if that makes sense. I hope he is ok now. I love that guy. Anyhow, I can’t give up drawing if I’m alive. If I’m alive, I’m drawing, please stop asking me to take a break :/ I have the mangaka fighting spirit at heart. I got that shit heavy and nothing - no matter what pain - can take that away. I can’t stop. I can’t explain why, but it’s almost automatic for me. Do you know what manga has done for my life? It is all I am at my core, I promise. I am nothing without my manga.

I will say, not a fucking fan of the point I see from some leftists that "Actually specialized artists shouldn't exist as a field, art should be something you do after working all day in the community garden."

Like, A) that would fuck up so many artforms that rely on specialized skill and time it's not even funny and B) Denying "inefficient" art resources and time that being allowed to focus on it brings because you don't consider it "real" labor is already what happens under capitalism, and the results speak for themselves.

Like, I get that there's a deep and abiding working-poor anger at the Middle Class Professionals that are so often the face of art-as-profession and the way they turn skill/polish from a ceiling into a floor for access, doubly so if you're a member of said working-poor denied access to that field.

But like... sweet genius
