Hi all,  I’ve gone ahead and (finally) uploaded last year’s one-shot comic “My Friend Jeffrey” to Tapastic (comics reader).  If I’m honest, I’m incredibly proud of myself for being able to pump out these 23 pages in basically a month and a half. The art surely isn’t my best, and there is notably more photograph splicing in this comic than in my more recent works I’ve yet to release. Though, despite my personal feelings of a lack in visual quality in this work, I don’t think I’ve felt so energized since drawing this one. With college continuing and my PBS (painful bladder syndrome) not having improved much at all, I feel lethargic and stagnant more and more, no matter how hard I work. My PBS truly does make exerting myself so difficult, but… let’s not go into my health status much currently. I try to not complain or make mentions of my health much lately because of the vast amount of criticism I’ve received from others about being “complaning,” “too much,” or “needy.”  nbsp; I share this comic in hopes of it bringing on some sort of ironic joy, though any reaction at all is more than I’d ask for. ...as a copyright minimalist, it really pisses me off that so few people in my corner bother to try and come up with very good solutions to "How do artists make a living."

Like… so many of them just fucking default to "use donation models supported by true fans uwu" and while that can work, even most of the top fucking eschelon of creators on Patreon are basically making poverty wages, and most people who make a living have to treat it as one of many income streams, because again, it's not fucking enough.

Not at the scale artists need, and the way some people in "my" corner ignore that to moralize while failing to come up with better solutions infuriates me.

Like, you'd be surprised that I could be called relatively conservative on my current demands wrt copyright reduction, specifically for reduction back to 56 years in the US (Life + 50 in the countries where applicable) and massive expansion of fair use.

This is because these are things that are doable now without fucking over artists.

I want more, but I am painfully aware that'd be a much bigger project because you'd need to overhaul so much about how we economically handle art as a society, and it pisses me off how nobody's looking for those solutions beyond platitudes!

I've seen a few decent ideas. A "Mario Kart" version of copyright, where the larger in scale a works' rightsholder is the less protection it gets, was suggested by one person, I'd say mutually-supporting collectives based around Creative Commons works (Think akin to the SCP Foundation) would be a good start, as would long-term income-y government art grants that require the stuff produced under them to go into the Public Domain.

Even beyond that, the Peer Production License is also a great way to open up your ideas as well without making them vulnerable to corporate exploitation, that's worth looking into.

But like, we need more of those, and it does piss me off that people supposedly in "my" corner call artists entitled babies for pointing out the problem here!

It's the big obstacle to actually getting shit done, stop calling artists fascist for wanting moral rights Patricia and come up with something that actually works!

The text to the right of the illustration reads in Japanese “Okaeri Punpun,” which means “Welcome back, Punpun.”

Who else’s life was changed because of Inio Asano or Oyasumi Punpun? Who else was there when the final chapter was released in Japanese on the scanlation sites? Remember when his works were just becoming popular overseas? Remember when http://hoxtranslations.blogspot.com/ was making an effort to translate all of Inio Asano’s manga which at the time wasn’t available overseas in English language yet? Remember when the only way to read Punpun was the “illegal” way? I remember reading this manga; 2013, just a mere few months before the final volume was released. Punpun was still this unknown, obscure indie manga that merely had a small western following on Tumblr. The term “utsu” manga (depressing manga) hasn’t been ascribed to Inio Asano’s works yet. It was yet the early days for his works over here… I remember those days fondly; those days made me who I am now as an artist. The way to describe the relationship I have with Inio Asano’s manga works is “A friend I’ve never met.” Wonder who else feels this way…
