Reminder From Someone With Actual Literal Brain Damage From A Brain Injury To Stop Fucking Using "brain

Reminder from someone with actual literal brain damage from a brain injury to stop fucking using "brain damage" and "brain injuries" as a means of describing someone whose opinions you don't like or deem as stupid.

It's ableist and offensive as fuck, and for some reason a lot of leftist people think it's okay to use. I've seen posts replying to right wing racists calling them "brain damaged if you believe this" and "do you have a brain injury? do you not understand X?". Just now I saw a beautiful post about fat people throughout history that was absolutely ruined by opening with "How do we break it to boomers with actual brain damage and nostalgic brainrot..." before continuing to say that fat people existed throughout history.

Brain damage does not make you racist. A brain injury doesn't make you ignorant, or fatphobic, or unaware of history and politics. Stop fucking using my disability as a catch all to describe people you think are shitty. Y'all use it like it's a replacement for how people used to use the R-slur, which shows you learned absolutely nothing about why the R-slur was wrong to use and decided to throw in other disabilities instead. Fuck off and stop doing it.

(And don't do it with other disabilities either, because I know y'all do.)

I know a lot of people with brain injuries. They're smart, and funny, and compassionate. They learn about the world and care about social issues and wish they could go to protests if their disability won't allow them to. Are there right wing people with brain injuries? Sure, absolutely. But they are not right wing because they have a brain injury, and using any disability as an insult is still fucking ableist.

Tldr - stop using brain damage and brain injury as an insult. It's ableist and incredibly offensive.

Love, your local brain injured/brain damaged pal

"Brain damage" only sounds like a harsh and offensive way to describe brain injuries because people constantly use it as an insult. It's a totally neutral descriptor of what it is. I have brain damage. My brain is damaged. It's not ableist to call it that, it's ableist to call people you don't like brain damaged because you think it's an inherently bad thing to be.

No disorder is inherently evil.

No disorder is inherently abusive.

No disorder is inherently scary.

Stop generalizing folks with stigmatized disorders.

I think I might be relapsing.

I don't even want to really say it because I'm afraid the second I say "I think I'm relapsing into compulsive lying," everyone is going to think everything I've ever posted is a lie and nothing I'll say will ever convince them otherwise. But I am. I am relapsing because of the situation at work and because I'm scared to go into work every single day and that's just making my mental state so much worse and now I'm compulsive lying again.

At least this time, unlike when I was younger, my lies are believable so I'm not getting caught when it happens. It might landslide back in that direction, it might not. I hope it won't. I'll try and talk to my therapist about it and see if we can figure out how to fix this.

This sucks. It could be worse, but still, it sucks.

(And no, before you ask, I'm not lying about the stuff I post online. Because online, I type out the lie but realize it before clicking post and I can just delete it. For me, compulsive lying is only really an issue in my real life. I can stop myself from lying online. And if I do lie, I can always delete the post fast. I'm not lying.)

A rectangular, seven striped flag. All stripes are equally sized. The colours from top to bottom are a gradient from almost-white purple to full, dark green. In the middle of the flag there are two overlapping speech bubbles. The one on top has an X in it.

A flag for those who are compulsive liars! This is intended for people with aspd and npd, but it can be used by anyone that it applies to.

good afternoon everyone! not so friendly reminder that correcting someone’s grammar and/or spelling as a comeback to something they said is ableist! implying someone is not worth listening to or their argument is automatically invalid because of their grammar and/or spelling is ableist!

disclaimer: i’m not saying everyone who has ever done this is a horrible person or that you consciously knew it was ableist, i’m saying that it’s a harmful way of thinking and going about things and it needs to stop now. you’ve done this and now you feel guilty? good on you for recognizing that it was bad. not many people are willing to do that. get up, keep going, don’t do it again, and point out ableism where you see it. as i always say, in an ableist society like ours, the only people free of internalized ableism are those who have already unlearned it.

i think some people forget intellectually disabled people in conversations about disability.

i dont feel included in a lot of conversations because people prioritize how they sound over accessibility. they use words i just can't understand to explain concepts. people find it more important to "sound like an intellectual" than to take a step back and realize a lot of people wont actually understand this.

i want to be included in conversations about activism and justice, but no one makes it accessible. when i ask questions, its taken as "oh my gosh do you really not know what that is!! youre a bad activist/advocate/etc.".

i have tried doing my own research, but thats not accessible to me either. its the same issue. i cant understand what im reading, nothing makes sense. its a cycle im trapped in until someone eventually explains. but by then, im not updated and informed like id like to be.

TLDR: use smaller words!!! please!! i cant understand you!! /lh

Sick of Kleptomania being treated as the punchline of a joke or as a quirky character behaviour in media. Like "oh here's our klepto friend, at some point in the series we're going to need a maguffin and whaddaya know, klepto over there will have stolen it!"

It's not funny. It's not a chekhovs gun or a magical maguffin. It's a mental disorder.

Just like how we're sick of autistic stereotypes, ADHD stereotypes, OCD stereotypes in movies, can we also get over the "Cute Klepto" character.

“Don’t let your disorder define you”

Okay but do you support the people whose disorders do define them?

Do you support people with the chronic illnesses who have had to develop whole lives around their conditions? Do you support the intellectually disabled people whose whole way of thinking is defined by their disorder? Do you support the people with personality disorders who literally have a disorder as a personality? Do you support the autism/ADHD people whose disorder you can’t separate from who they are? Do you support the DIDOSDD people who have multiple definitions of themselves because of their disorder?

Or are you just saying that because a disorder defining someone means you can’t ignore it.
