Ok listen we NEED to talk about your girlfriend. I know you’re doomed by the narrative and all, but she keeps defying the will of fate with her vain and ever more desperate attempts to save you. It’s SERIOUSLY going to rend the fabric of space-time if she keeps this up. I’m not even joking. We’re all going to end up in a closed loop of decaying reality if—it’s not cute, stop laughing!!

A lot of people don't seem to understand what Barbara actually did as Oracle, so let me clear up some misconceptions. Oracle is first and foremost an information broker. She's a data nexus, a living hub of information that crimefighters around the world could reach out to for assistance and mission coordination:

"So how'd you become the data nexus for every costumed crimebuster in the world?" "That's gonna have to remain off the table too."

Yes, that role centers her gift with technology, computers and hacking, and that is the area where Babs most often shines. And yes, those tech skills are incredibly formidable and absolutely vital to her work! But the TECHNOLOGY isn't what makes Babs special.

Babs' tech skills positioned her as one of the most prominent fictional women in STEM in the 90s/early 2000s and gave her the ability to do things like build a VR fighting simulation room (eg, a Star Trek-esque holodeck) from scratch:

"Maybe we should move back to Greenie play level." "But you designed this game, Babs. And this incredible virtual reality projection room." -Birds of Prey (1999) #19

However, those skills are all ultimately secondary to her real gifts, which are her eidetic memory and her ability to gather, analyze, synthesize and distribute information to people:

"What I believe happened to Batman is too important to rely on my photographic memory..." /// "Having been blessed with photographic recall, I studied a dozen newspapers, four dozen magazines, and my main haunt: the computer bulletin boards." -Showcase '94 #12 /// "I was nine when I realized I could ace any test without really studying. Oracle wasn't just a glorified hacker. She was the crimefighting community's living computer and central information hub:

Despite having her spine shattered by the Joker's bullet, Barbara Gordon refused to give up. Recognizing she could no longer be the kind of superhero she had been, she instead devoted all her time to developing one of the world's most complex and powerful computer systems and set to work accumulating information, renaming herself 'Oracle.' Blessed with a photographic memory, Barbara reads dozens of the world's top newspapers and magazines daily. She's also constantly gathering information from other, less public sources, such as the CIA's mainframe, not to mention the data networks of the FBI, NSA, and Interpol (all without their knowledge or consent)." -Secret Files and Origins (2000)

It's part of why "Cop!Babs" is so insidious as a profession DC keeps pushing onto her, because Barbara Gordon is, at her core, a librarian. As Oracle, she gathered information and valuable resources and then coordinated with crimefighters around the world to help them access and utilize it. Her day job became her night job:

"From my days as Gotham's head librarian, I knew how to find out whatever I needed. If I could do that for citizens, I could do it for colleges, non-profit corporations, private investigators...and superheroes." -Showcase '94 #12

She's not "just" a tech geek; librarians are trained to have specific sets of research, information analysis, and communication skills that others don't have. And those are skills she has that the other Batfamily members do not, and they are skills she has regardless of whether or not she can walk:

"I was tired of being a victim. I had skills and abilities long before I was Batgirl. It was time to make them work for me again. It was time to stop being afraid." -Oracle: Year One

This skillset also served her well as the co-founder and leader of the Birds of Prey; contrary to semi-popular perception, she's not just the Birds' 'Guy in the Chair.' She's the Birds' Leader and Mission Control. She tells them where they need to go, what they need to do, and how to achieve their goals. To put it into James Bond terms, she's their "Q", but she's also their "M."

So if you look at Oracle and you only see "hacker and tech specialist," you are seeing a very limited picture of who Barbara is, what her skillset is and how she uses it, and what her role in the crimefighting community was.

Why the twins abandoned Draxum

Ok, i promised more Imaginary Friend content, and i am here to deliver!

this is a little more of the plot side of things rather than the shenanigans.

i'll put it under the cut since it's long. again.

Ok, so they sneak out to meet with Mikey and Raph for about three years before Draxum realizes what's going on. (or part of what's going on. He knows they have been sneaking out and the caretaker hasn't been doing his job properly, but he doesn't know they were sneakign out to meet, or even who they were meeting.)

Upon finding this out, the caretaker is fired and Draxum decides that, if they are competent enough to constantly leave the house on their own and come back fine, they are competent enough to be properly trained. This means they no longer have the opportunity to sneak out.

Mikey and Raph try to reach out to them via mind meld, but it's too far for a strong enough connection to communicate, not to mention the twins keep purposefully shutting them out. the twins figure that since they can no longer meet up with them, that It's better to cut themselves off completely now than continuing to long for a time, they believe, is gone.

It's two more years before they meet again, and it's on accident.

When Mayhem stole the emperium, Draxum sent the twins to fetch it, treating it as a test.

They're sent out to fetch the emperium, and, of course, run into Mikey and Raph (and April). It's very much a surprise, especially considering they're standing between them and their mission. They're careful not to hurt their siblings but do get Mayhem away Donnie sending Mikey a quick "do not follow us. it's dangerous" mind meld message before they nope on out through Leo's portal. a portal that both April and the soon-to-be imitation crab man go through before it closes.

They appear right in the middle of the lab so neither of the twins quite realize they have stowaways until it's too late. They recognize April as one of Mikey and Raph's friends and figure it's not a good idea for Draxum to realize she's there, so they hide her in a nearby closet before Draxum can notice, miming for her to stay quiet. once Draxum leaves again, Leo portals her back out of the building (he's aiming for topside but ends up just setting her down on their front porch for Mikey and Raph to find.)

Anyways! Mikey and Raph (and April) show up like canon, and, of course Draxum is seeing stars. It's the other two. He could have a full set once again! but they prove to be difficult to coerce into joining him, so he creates that vine monster to fight them (and test them while they're at it.) He sends Leo and Donnie after them as well, but they linger, choosing halfheartedly fight April rather than their brothers. That is, until Mikey ends up weaponless and the target of an attack that could hurt him.

Then the above happens. Donnie instinctively protects Mikey, which angers Draxum, which causes Leo to portal Donnie behind him so he's away from him, and, then they defect, choosing to get their brothers, April, and Mayhem out of the soon-to-explode lab rather than continue fighting.

but yeah, that's how they get away from Draxum. The power of little brother in peril lol.

(fun fact i'm just coming up with now (but have been thinking about) Draxum was super extra dramatic when he named the twins originally. He named them Thanatos and Somnus. though neither of them really acknowledge those names b/c they so rarely heard them growing up. Literally only Draxum used them. which is why when Mikey asked thier names, they just shrugged. Why is that Draxum beign extra, b/c those are the twin personifications of death and sleep respectively (though Somnus is technically the Roman name. but since Somnus's Greek name is Hypnos, i thought it would be too confusing.) also, according to Greek Mythology, Thanatos and Hypnos are the twin sons of Nyx (goddess of night) and Erebus (god of the dark). SO yes, Draxum was being dramatic AF and named a set of twins he was going to train to be ninja warriors, after the mythological twins born to night and darkness. and who also embody death and sleep. (this also gives me a good excuse to jokingly call the twins the Myth Twins, even though the aus staying named Mikey's imaginary Friends. lol))

Hey, we need to talk about the way Batfamily fans write Cass using ASL, because a lot of it is really fucking ableist

But Cass can't speak, of course she needs to sign!

Not true! There is nothing physically wrong with Cass's vocal chords or mouth, there's nothing in her brain stopping her from making sounds, and she is not an elective mute. She actually learns to speak individual words really quickly after she puts herself into an environment where that's a useful skill. Basil teaches her to quote huge chunks of Shakespeare in Nu52, and that's easier for her than forming simple sentences. That would definitely not be the case if she had any physical limitations on her speech.

Cass's disability is that she was not taught any language, and so she is having to grok the entire concept of language from the ground up. Grammar and syntax; tonality; how to combine words to convey more complex ideas; how putting two words next to one another can change their meaning; how to break down a whole idea into the individual parts needed to turn it into words; the fact that people's words might not line up with their tone and body language so you have to pay attention to both; how to tell if someone wants a response or is stating a fact; how to work out meaning from context if a word is new or someone has an unfamiliar accent; how to know if someone is using a new word or if they actually just have an unfamilar accent and all the ways words can be bent and changed before they become something new; the fact that two words can use the same sounds but have the same meaning; the fact that there can be two different words that mean the same thing. This is all stuff she didn't learn as a baby, and not knowing it would be just as much an impediment to learning ASL as learning English (for accent, swap out things like having limited movement in their hands, or having learned slightly different forms of the same sign, using a lot of home-signs etc, it's the same concept in a different medium).

There is no language on earth Cass wouldn't have these problems with. ASL is not any kind of shortcut.

But she reads body language, and ASL is kind of like body language right?

Not true, also pretty abelist! Just as the sounds which make up spoken language are essentially arbitrary (there's no objective reason why the sound "gud" should mean good, English speakers just all agree it does) so most of the signs in ASL are arbitrary! There's no reason for

to mean good. ASL users just all agree that it does. Cass knowing body language would not help her any more with ASL than it would with English, and if anything, it might make it harder, because sign uses the whole body and therefore changes the way people use body language so unless she saw a lot of ASL users as a child (and there's no particular reason to think she did), she would have to adjust what she knows about body language to account for those differences!

But she signs in the comics!

Nope! She uses hand gestures to communicate sometimes, but that's not signing. Pointing at food and miming eating to convey hunger is not sign. Pretending to punch someone and pulling it at the last second to convey you could hurt them but won't (Cass's actual first communication with Bruce in the comics) isn't signing. I've done the point and mime thing in countries where I didn't speak the language, that does not mean I knew that country's native sign language!

But she learns ballet, that's like a physical language, so sign is the same thing!

Nope! Also low key kinda abelist. Dance is a method of communication, but it isn't a full language. There's almost no grammar or sentence structure, the vocabulary is extremely limited, and also you can just make up new dance moves or use moves from different styles of dance together and still convey your meaning (you cannot just make random gestures or use BSL and expect ASL users to understand you, because they're full complex languages). Cass vibes with dance pretty hard, but that's precisely because it isn't a language, it doesn't require any of the skills she struggles with in order to communicate emotion.

But ASL isn't like a real language, it's not as complex or nuanced as spoken English so it would be easier for her to learn

That is so fucking gross I don't even want to have this conversation with you. Go and sit in the timeout box and think about what you've just said, and then commit to doing better.

But I just think that once she learned it, she'd like using ASL because [it's very expressive/she's used to her world being very quiet/she can use it on stealth missions more easily/etc]

But I'm writing an AU were she uses ASL because her backstory is too comic-book-y to fit in no-capes AUs but I didn't want to erase her communication difficulties so I've written her as having a different disability

But what if I write her using makatong?

(For context, makatong is a form of sign developed for people who have intellectual or phsyical disabilities that affect language use, which uses more descriptive signs which require less precise hand possitioning than other sign languages, and which has very simple grammar, making it easier to learn than ASL). Yes this would be easier for her, because it's intended for people with similar difficulties to hers, but since her difficulties stem purely from a lack of experience which can be (and are, in canon) overcome with practise, it would be kind of needlessly limiting compared to her just starting out with very simple spoken language, and wouldn't give her as many chances to develop those language learning skills. Makatong is also not mutually intelligable with any other sign language, so she couldn't easily transition from that to ASL once she got used to signing, she'd have to start learning it from scratch.

But I HC her as deaf

There is 0 comics evidence to support that, but it's a headcanon, so who cares. You do you. Have fun.

That is not even slightly how it work. Go read the wikipedia article on sign languages around the world or something. Do some research.

TL:DR; Cass does not use ASL in the comics, and nothing about her disability or sign languages in general would make learning ASL easier or more convinent for her than spoken English. That does't mean writing her signing is inherently bad, but you should examine your reasons for doing it to ensure you're not just perpetuating ableist stereotypes about the language.

I have no explanation

I'm wondering how the established rivalries and such happened in the Imaginary Friends AU.

Can see the twins getting jealous when Mikey makes friends with Todd; that's their little brother, but, also....this guy is really nice???

And how would the conflict with the Purple Dragons go? It's not like April's gonna be calling Donnie to help with schoolwork.

I think the twins would get pretty jealous of Todd, or at least suspicious of him? Donnie more than Leo simply of how they're introduced to him (the "Repo Mantis" episode is a very Donnie and Mikey centric episode, and it would stay that way for this au. The biggest change being that Mikey keeps accidentally coercing Donnie into doing a lot of the cannon shenanigans b/c Donnie has little to no immunity to little brother puppy dog eyes lol. also that Hueso is freaking out in the background b/c one of his the twins is missing for three days! and the other one keeps just telling him "he's fine" and not explaining!) So Donnie is very adamant that there's something suspicious about Todd, Leo joins him b/c there is no way anyone can be this nice. In reality Donnie just wants an excuse to not like him b/c he was stealing his brotherly bonding time lol.

As for the Purple Dragons, i think that situation would be completely reworked for Donnie. He's still going to end up with a pretty big rivalry with the Purple Dragons, but i think the way he ends up getting that would be closer to if you crossed "Breaking Purple" with "The Purple Jacket".

Let me explain.

by this point, Donnie is only just started building stuff. Sure, he read every single technology based book in the library, and proceeded to continue that research via a borrowed library laptop. but before they ended up with Hueso, he didn't dare try much more than maybe dissemble something at the junk yard. Once he's comfortable at Hueso's, he starts taking things apart for the express purpose of seeing if he can put them back together. (sometimes he can, sometimes Hueso has to call a repair man and Donnie can watch them put it back together. it's a win-win in his book.) But beyond that and occasionally tinkering with the Jupiter Jim moon buggy they stole, he hasn't started buildign anything of his own yet.

Then one night, he's out on his own, (not exactly sure why yet, i'll get back to u) and he sees this group of kids at a playground building drones.

Donnie is absolutely fascinated.

He's never seen anyone build tech stuff before, not outside the repair dude and things on youtube. And they're people his own age! Building stuff!! and that stuff is purple!!! So he hides nearby and watches them work for a while, coming back several days in a row just to watch the progress. He's not entirely sure why the drones keep coming back broken, but he loves watching them get repaired.

After watching them for a while, he decides he wants to try to befriend them. Hueso keeps telling them both that they should try to make more friends, why can't these people be them?

So Donnie comes up with a plan.

He decides if he makes his own drone, one that's just as cool (if not cooler) than theirs, they would see he's cool and good with tech too and would want to befriend him as well.

Thus Shelldon is created.

for this AU, Shelldon is purely a drone, created via tech, and a hint of mystics (it was only incorporated so Donnie could communicate mentally with him, but it accidentally made the little dude sentient lol. Yes, Hueso is loosing his damn mind over this.)

So Donnie shows up to the Purple Dragons, visible for the first time, with a little Turtle shaped sentient Drone that he's holding to his chest.

(Purple Dragons think he's weird/creepy b/c he's just standing there letting his drone do all the talking for him.)

They let Donnie stay around, even give him a jacket and pretend to be his friend b/c they want to win that drone race and Shelldon is probably their best bet. But they can see how attached Donnie is to this Drone (if he's not showing Shelldon off, he has him held to his chest) so they know they can't just say "Hey, lets' race your drone in a really dangerous race that wrecks every drone that goes through it." They tried to steal it, but the tracker they put in the jacket keeps "malfunctioning" and leading them to a brick wall and not a home.

Eventually they decide to just ask him to 'borrow' Shelldon for the day. (Donnie only agrees b/c Shelldon himself said he was cool with it. "it's like a sleepover, dude. It will be cool.")

But Donnie's still very worried, so he follows them without beign noticed. (Shelldon might know he's there, but he's not snitching).

Donnie realizes what type of race this is after it starts, and tries to confront them/get Shelldon out of there but the Purple Dragons keep him from interfering.

At least they do until Shelldon gets hurt during the race (just a propeller gets broken and he ends up kinda spiraling to the ground, not getting any further injuries. easy to repair.)

And, well, lets put it this way. He is a very pissed off technokenetic (?) surrounded by a lot of high-grade drones. Shit is going down. (Yes, Donnie can be a little badass, as a treat : ) )

It is quite possible that Leo picked him and Shelldon up from this upon noticing his twin's fury, but yeah. This is how the Purple Dragons got on Donnie's shit list, and, as a bonus, how Shelldon came to be! (at least as far as i know rn.)

Why Leo is “Blue”

In the series where each turtle look so distinct from each other, it’s weird that Splinter calls them by colors. Even more so, Leo is a red slider. He has those prominent red markings on his face.

So why is he blue?

Rats, aside from being near sighted, are red-green colorblind. Specifically, red-weak/protanomoly color blind.

Donnie has purple markings, Mikey had orange markings. And Leo?

Well he looks blue to mutant rat man. 🥺
