I really be walking around my house singing Pale Pale Moon
What really gets to me is Stack promising Sammie that he could drive the car on the way back—which Sammie does—but no one could’ve ever imagined that he’d be driving back alone.
There’s also the moment at the beginning of the movie, when Smoke and Stack pick up Sammie from the church, and Stack promises their Uncle Jed that he and Smoke will get Sammie back to him in one piece—which they do, more or less.
Even though it’s Sammie who physically gets himself back home, he does, in fact, make it back in one piece—thanks to Smoke making Stack promise not to hurt Sammie and Stack agreeing to let Sammie live out the rest of his life.
It’s beautiful—yet bittersweet—how, even if Stack doesn’t realize it, all three of his promises regarding Sammie were honored in the end.
My guess on the meaning of the movie ladybird. (Because I haven't slept and I've been thinking about this and it's 5 am)
Christina created her own persona "ladybird " where she can escape her mother's and the world's rules and expectations for her. She, as ladybird can be and do anything.
However, in doing so, she builds walls to protect herself using and absorbing the same abusive personality traits her mother has. Re-purposing those abusive traits makes her a part of the cycle and is the main ironic theme of the story.
This backfires, however, because she becomes the person she's trying to defend herself from. She becomes, in a way, her own abuser. That's not to say her mother had no part in it bc she was part of the cycle too.
The ending of the movie was to show how she became her own person, a part of her family and love for her mother, and a part of her own story too. Showing the two versions of herself can coexist in the usage of her name as a metaphor.
The only thing I didn't like was that the mother seemed to only feel regret about her actions and never seemed to truly attempt to fix her patterns of abuse.
Idk. That's just my take on it.

“The world is full of uncertainties and we're shaken up by them all the time. While we sway this way and that and are broken by them perhaps we will one day learn to bend instead of breaking.”

why are so many people sleeping on 'pale, pale moon'??!
yes, obviously 'i lied to you' and 'rocky road to dublin' were great scenes, and they were both used amazingly in the movie, but also?? PALE, PALE MOON???
this song did such a good job at showing the intense sense of community that was building between the people who were at the juke joint. everyone was joining together in this scene, singing and dancing to the rhythm in such synchronicity. they were partying and laughing and enjoying themselves together, and it really felt like they'd known each other a lifetime. and the fact that this song could be heard through the building's walls showed the power of that harmony, that sense of community. it showed what was possible when people came together under shared bonds and experiences.
and also take into consideration the literal meaning behind some of the lyrics. "Lawd away til the sun does rise" "Gonna move my body through the whole night long" obviously talking about partying through the whole night. but also this is a vampire movie, it's literally talking about how once they get turned to vampires, they'll only be able to move through the night, until the sun rises.
maybe i'm wrong, and people are talking about this song. but i loved it and i wanted to talk about it :D
