The thing about media analysis is that yes, things really can be that deep even if the artist didn't put the thought into it intentionally.
Little cultural references, personal artist quirks, broad societal influences, unacknowledged biases...there are countless things in a piece of media that can betray subconscious beliefs and values held by the artist, even if the artist wasn't doing it on purpose. Even bad art can be picked apart for its themes, even shallow art can reflect something about the world and the person viewing it.
Any given piece of art has the potential to be however deep you're willing to dig for it, even if the artist didn't dig that deep on their own.

rhaenyra and alicent + motion sickness by phoebe bridgers
You are born in Autumn. Somewhere in September, you are alive, in those early years where the world is growing consciousness. And every discovery is new. There are shades of yellow and green blooming everyday: your favorite colors as you grow. You are born with ambition. Raised in soft houses, and gentle words. There are beliefs you deny. You leave people. You are so many things that cannot be described. Yet, you are present in guitar riffs, conch shells, pears, yellow pouring through the window of the train. You are like James: who had an ego the size of a lake but a heart to match it. Your eyes are dipped in minerals from the very core of the earth. You were touched with goodness from your dead father and sister. You are alive. You hurt people. You leave them and you hurt them. You are the reason the air is wide.
Have you heard of the boy who held kindness close even though anger is an option?
I have.
His eyes contained the forests that hold our life; green and nature-blessed. And, his hair remains grown, messily arranged — it contains memories, not so kind, but hopeful to the eye. The base of his cheeks are four-leaved clovers: luck, pure luck has brought him here.
I have known of him.
I have known of him. His sense of a squirrel. As they plant trees with their acorns in the soil. As he does good with anger burning in the air. As he cries, with his head upon my shoulder. Cheeks dampening the side of my shirt.
I have known.
I have known his kind smile (not forced, never forced) and I see his lips fumble, fumbling, upon the overwhelming comfort.
Stupid, stupid man. The world does not deserve his kindness, they do not deserve him, and his sense of a squirrel, and his hopeful eyes to a trivial, humane need such as comfort.
Whatever labour they have done, they brought upon this man. Of good and gold. Of nature and luck. Of peace, never-ending peace.
Of kindness over anger.

New AO3 Tag Wrangling Policy and the Transformers Fandom
recoiling in horror bc the "sherlock holmes and related fandoms" tag is gone
My understanding is that "All Media Types" tags are starting to disappear from certain fandoms on AO3, and if this is indeed the direction the site is headed in, the Star Wars tags are going to be a hot mess. As the post New AO3 Tag Wrangling Policy and the Transformers Fandom explains, the All Media Types tags help keep works from different parts of the same media types from being classified as Crossovers, which is...kind of important when talking about Star Wars as well.
Like, ignoring the fact that the majority of Star Wars movies, TV shows, books, and video games have characters and timelines that overlap one another, we also had an an EU reset a decade ago, which resulted in a split between Legends and Canon. And, I can't speak for the entire fandom, but I know plenty of writers who like to pick aspects they like from each and stick them in the same story.
Consider: Would a story involving sequel-trilogy Leia remembering an event that occurred during the original trilogy suddenly be considered a Crossover (which would exclude it from the search results of a ton of people who avoid Crossovers that mix franchises, but who would actually be interested in the story since it's the same dang franchise)? Would a story detailing the entirety of Obi-Wan's life be considered a Crossover? The implications of such a decision are not great.
It is being suggested that we voice our opinions (politely) using AO3's Support and Feedback form. I'm going to do so, and if this is something that concerns you, you might speak up as well. Hopefully if enough people say something, they'll either stop retiring the tags or will come up with another solution, because this is madness for so many fandoms.
shoutout to dior goodjohn's scream of anguish when percy broke clarisse's spear in 1x02. it was so striking from a character who has otherwise been very cold and controlled. she made it instantly clear that the spear was something special to her and the knowledge that it was a gift from her father places a whole new perspective on her bullying. she too, like luke, is pursuing her own form of ruthless glory. and she, like percy, is a child suffering from her father's neglect, desperate for recognition. a tiny moment but very impactful.
my man, my man, my man
i do not pity israel. never have, and never will.
each night that gaza experiences is deadlier than the last, as idf soldiers record propaganda tiktoks, make rave parties and grwms and fit checks, gloat over having food and water, and film themselves deriving sadistic pleasure from torturing their hostages and victims and desecrating the dead.
Palestinians have to display their martyred before the camera for you to believe the atrocities that the zionist entity has subjected them to. they cannot even mourn in private. the apartheid entity murders them in cold blood, and you deliver the killing blow by doubting them.
babies whose families have been killed will never get to know their own name.
i can't reshare a tenth of the videos and photos that cross my timeline. i have seen more dead children in the past month than i have known death my entire life.
israeli settlers burn olive trees, bomb bakeries and fishing boats, shower white phosphorus and earthquake bombs on the captive civilians of gaza. you already know about the disastrous effects of white phosphorus, but earthquake bombs were last used during ww2 to wipe out entire cities.
how holy is the land that seeks to be built over the mass graves of thousands of children? is it holier than the miracle of a child being born in this hypocritical world?
all 11 universities in gaza have been bombed. academics should be agitating right now, especially those who call themselves "decolonial thinkers." destruction of universities is a sinisterly deliberate act to sabotage the Palestinians who will survive this great catastrophe.
the act of cleansing your hands before prayer is extremely important to muslims. no part of us can remotely comprehend the grief of the mother who refused to wash her hands from the blood of her children after losing them in a zionist airstrike over gaza. "I swear I won't wash them, I won't wash my hands, how else am I supposed to sleep near my kids."
it is only both moral and right when one side defends itself. the other side are the price of war, no better than insects and cattle and sheep left to die within the four walls of the slaughterhouse.
this situation should not be up for debate, but let me finish with one final thing : do your research about Palestine. HOWEVER. you do not need a degree in middle east studies to object to an ongoing genocide. if someone outwits you in a debate about historical details and every nuance of a subject, you were and will remain entirely correct in objecting to a genocide.
may those martyred rest in peace and be reunited again with their loved ones in heaven's eternal vastness.
DO NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT PALESTINE.
glory to Palestinian resistance. from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.

You first met Jaime Lannister during the Year of the False Spring, at the Great Tourney of Harrenhal—you had only been ten years of age, still starry-eyed and gentle-of-tongue. Knights, lords, and ladies hailing from all over Westeros were buzzing about the opening feast. Chalices of golden ale, platters of fruit and cheese, and sizzling trays of freshly-roasted meats were splayed out over several long tables.
To your right was your eldest brother, Brandon, biting into a large turkey leg and gingerly offering you a piece when he caught you ogling him. To your left was your sister Lyanna, popping voluminous grapes into her mouth and chattering to your two other brothers, Benjen and Ned, across the table. Her grey eyes were alight with glee, and she tipped her head back to laugh when Benjen made a snarky comment about Ned’s overgrown hair.
You were well into your second serving of glazed lemon cakes when the crown Prince, Rhaegar Targaryen, stood up front. A hush descended upon the crowd when the handsome, silver-haired man brandished a large, golden harp.
