Have you ever been reading a really good fic and then it gets so intense that you suddenly have the urge to get up and go away for a little? For example, the two main characters are arguing, just having this terrible huge fight and one of them says something that shocks the other into silence and I’m like “Haha look at the time! I must go now… I’m late for that thing in the kitchen, you know?…That thing I was supposed to do… In the kitchen….The thing in the kitchen” then I run away for five minutes.

Everything is blurry and fuzzy around the edges.

Daniel blinks rapidly, trying to clear his vision, only to be met with a dizzying wave of nausea. Changing course, he turns his head, and instead focuses on the painting of a vase hanging on the wall across from his bed. It’s kind of ugly, if he’s being honest, and there aren’t even any flowers in the vase. It’s just a blue vase on a brown table.

No, ugly is too mean. But boring. Or, maybe, Daniel just doesn’t get it.

Which, he reflects, is entirely possible, given his current state.

His arm throbs, a piercing little sting in time with his heartbeat, acting as an embarrassing reminder of his overambitious zeal. But he’d been tired of the tarps coming loose with every little gust of wind, and the final pieces had been delivered that morning, and really, how hard could it be to install a couple of French doors?

Pretty damn hard, as it turns out.

And now he’ll have to order new doors, on top of everything else.

“You look like shit, man.”

Daniel rolls over slowly, having learned his lessons earlier, to find Johnny standing in the door, arms crossed and brows raised. The nurse had closed the blinds and turned down the lights in his hospital room during her last check-up, so the only source of light is coming from the hallway, casting Johnny in a warm, almost otherworldly glow.

It does wonders for his dumb, beautiful, golden hair.

“Why, thank you,” Johnny chuckles, low and teasing, which means Daniel must have said that last part out loud. He walks over to sit down on the edge of the bed, grinning cheekily. “All natural, too, baby.”

The knee brace wasn’t the only new addition to his life post the All Valley.
