Manhua 漫画 Costume Appreciation post! I’ve been reading 魔尊要抱抱 (Devil Wants to Hug) (which is even cuter than it sounds) and constantly wanting to share the gorgeous artwork. So here is some of it.

Devil 魔尊 #1’s Outfit #1: no outfit, just earrings and red forehead-birthmark (and fancy pants). Raw angst.

Devil #1’s Outfit #2: Feathery Display. Cuz when he’s in Beast Form, he has wings, so his outfit has to have feathers. But still show off his chest.

(You have to wait for a bath scene to see anything more than the neck, fingertips, and feet of the Protagonists.)(He has adorable feet.)

Demon #1’s Outfit #3: Covering Up All the Harmful-Cultivation Wounds While Still Being Sexy

Doting Ghost/Demon Uncle/God-Father Outfit #1: How Can We Dress Him Like He’s Just Crawled Out of the Underworld, But Still Put His Abs on Display

Big Brother God Outfit #1: Naked From the Waist Up Except for Decorative Harness and Magically Attached Shoulder-Guard-with-Cape. And birthmark-tattoos. And crazy earrings.

And it goes on and on. The art is really gorgeous, even when it's not gratuitously displaying huge swaths of masculine musculature (the hair ornaments and clothing patterns are really lovely).

The story is pretty great, too. I'm mid-way through Season 2 right now and fully enamored with every major character.

This book has more plot than I have Chinese reading comprehension, but I think I see it now.

Chapter 52 is where Chang Geng asserts his superior intellect and problem-solving skills (because his vision isn’t clouded by pesky things like emotions for people who aren’t Gu Yun); and Chapter 53 is where he/Priest lays out Chang Geng’s evil master plan to bring peace and prosperity to the nation so that maybe he can convince Gu Yun to take a vacation.

No details or anything; just “this is the problem and that is what must be done.”

all right guys, let’s have a conversation about linguistic register, Lan Wangji, and I guess Wei Wuxian can come too

(and I do genuinely mean conversation, I’d love to hear other people’s input on this, because I did just write a long-ass post about the subjectivity of interpretation in translations)

So when I started interacting with the fandom and reading people’s fics, I got really confused by the way some folks were writing dialogue for Lan Wangji; he often sounded super awkward, spoke in fragments, and sometimes exclusively in third person. To be fair, all of those are elements of his speech at various times, but like, seeing it in English-language material felt like a really heavy-handed way of rendering it in translation?

I guess when you use third person within the first three episodes of the show, it makes a pretty big impression on the audience

This is not at all intended to be a criticism of people who are 1000% writing and creating wonderful work, which is more than I can say for myself, but I want to poke and prod and tease at some linguistic nuance here.

Take a deep breath, grab a pot of tea (this’ll take more than a cup), because we’re going to take the scenic route on this one–

MDZS Vol 2 Annotations, part 1

I finished annotating my copy of MDZS, Volume 2!

First off, I think the translations are perfectly wonderful and I am forever grateful that Seven Seas has given us the ability to share this story with a wider group of friends. With that, I went into Vol 2 trying to pretend that I did not speak Chinese, had little to no knowledge of Chinese culture.

Any time I saw something that didn't flow well to my North American brain or that didn't feel like what I remembered feeling when I read the Chinese version, I made a note. I love this story, and I don't expect my non-Chinese friends to remember the 5+ different things that Lan Xichen is called, or what in the world "shishu" is, so I made a lot of notes. Here they are:
