the lady from måneskin at the press conference saying the public votes have “much more value than the jury, no offense to the judge(s)” don’t apologize queen you’re absolutely right and FULL offense to the jury
All the cute nicknames Victor Frankenstein called his son throughout the book:
catastrophe
miserable monster
demoniacal corpse to which I have so miserably given life
an ugly mummy
a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived,
the filthy daemon to whom I have given life
no human
the wretch whom I had created
sight tremendous and abhorred
unearthly ugly being
too horrible for human eyes
miserable head
vile insect
abhorred monster
wretched devil
you, whose joint wickedness might desolate the world
too horrible for human eyes to behold
the filthy mass that moved and talked
wretch whom I dreaded
villain
monster of my creation
fiend
figure most hideous and abhorred
+ bonus - all the cute ways captain Robert Walton described Victor’s son on 1 page:
a form which I cannot find words to describe
never did I behold a vision so horrible as his face, of such loathsome, yet appalling hideousness
tremendous being
scary and unearthly in his ugliness
Tag yourself I’m “the filthy mass that moved and talked”
This. This is on the long list of reasons I love OSP. Go check out their YouTube and learn some mythology and literature and history and stuff. They make it fun and you learn a lot!
One of the things I did in 2020: I’ve read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein! Long story short - I pretty much fell in love with the story.
Here are some things that popular culture won’t tell you about Frankenstein that I find too interesting not to share:
Victor was never a doctor, but a college dropout.
The monster doesn’t have a name, but at some point he calls himself Adam. Also “Frankenstein” is Victor’s last name, so if you choose to interpret Adam as Victor’s son, “Frankenstein” becomes the Monster’s last name too. The point is, it’s 100% valid to call Frankenstein’s Monster simply “Frankenstein”.
The Monster is described as beautiful - 8 feet tall, his features symmetrical with limbs in proportion; his hair lustrous black and flowing; and his eyes yellow. He’s also super-strong and super-fast, but I think that should go without saying.
Adam is also incredibly intelligent and calculating. And pretty snarky and eloquent in his way of speaking. Oh yeah, and he also speaks French.
Towards the end of the book there’s a scene where the Monster grins and runs away across the Europe, armed with a gun and many pistols and it’s just… it’s great.
I’m in the middle of re-reading Frankenstein, and something I never quite realized before – even though I’ve seen it pointed out by others – is just how ineffectual Frankenstein is in dealing with anything. He whines, and he moans, and laments his life, but he never does anything about it.
When he first brings his creation to life and flees in terror, he takes absolutely no action afterwards. He doesn’t arm himself and resolve to return and kill the perceived monster he has birthed, he just wanders the streets until he goes home and hopes that it has gone away. When he gets back and sees that it is gone from his apartment he doesn’t try to marshal a pursuit, he’s just happy that it’s gone and that’s it. He gives absolutely no thought to what it may be doing out in the world, since it’s not his problem anymore.
When he learns that his brother has been murdered and their maid has been framed, he becomes convinced that the creature is responsible but he doesn’t tell anybody. He doesn’t even make up a mundane story that bypasses bringing a creature to life, like saying that he made a personal enemy who is targeting his family and that is why Justine is being framed. He just says that he believes her innocent but takes no action, and expects that to get her acquitted. He even bemoans that he has it worse than Justine since even though she is executed his guilt is so hard to bear.
After Justine’s death he says he is considering suicide, but he resists because if he did so then there would be nobody to protect his family. Except, again, he isn’t doing any protecting. He still hasn’t told anybody the truth, nor has he made up that plausible mundane explanation to get them on their guard. He doesn’t mount a watch at night or go about armed. He takes no action.
He is so self-centered that all he talks about is how hard everybody else’s pain is on him, and so spoiled that he does absolutely nothing to resolve any situation. He just seems to expect it to be worked out because he wants it so.
What a tool.

Bojack Horseman starts out as a show about a writer trying to write a nuanced portrait of a very fucked up guy, warts and all.
In truth, that biography ends up being nothing more than the beginning of Bojack’s story. In the first season, Bojack is a washed-up sitcom star who didn’t know how to move on from that. The entire first season of the show is just setting up the world and the characters of the show. I think the first season is great, and there are some really powerful episodes, that show that it’s a lot more than just some family guy type thing about some pathetic dude who revels in his own self-destructive behavior.
By season 6, we see the real nuanced portrait of this character. In a lot of ways, I enjoyed the first half of season 6 better than the second, because the first half gave me what I wanted to see. I like Bojack as a character. He is smart, and he’s witty, and he is blunt in the best way possible. He calls bullshit when he sees it, which is something I can respect, and he does care deep down about the people in his life. Mr. Peanutbutter is a great example of this. He is constantly annoyed by the guy and really doesn’t agree with lots of what he says or does, but there are plenty of scenes throughout the series where the two of them just,,,,, talk, and he’s real and honest and seems like a good friend.
At the same time, we all know the horrible things he does; getting a bunch of teens drunk, leaving them when one gets alcohol poisoning; attempting to sleep with a 17-year-old girl despite knowing how messed up that is; ruining the first project he has ever seen his friend be passionate about; being constantly petty; going on a bender with an addict who’s been sober for 9 months; being a constant enabler to people who need him; always covering his own tracks before helping people who need him; strangling his girlfriend; the list goes on. at his core though, the issues most of Bojack’s friends have with him are that he is self-centered, unreliable, and hurts everyone around him by knowingly self-sabotaging instead of doing what he knows the right thing is.
Bojack is not a good person because he generally isn’t a good influence on the people around him. Bojack going to prison is how he finally, for the first time ever, fully accepts responsibility for his actions. When he tells Mr. Peanutbutter that his prison sentence was about more than just the breaking and entering, it tells us as an audience that he finally understands that this is not an isolated instance. He has always given a half-hearted apology for a single thing for which he is criticized. I’m glad to have seen him finally accept responsibility for who he is as a person.
I guess my main point here is this; Bojack Horseman promised a nuanced portrait of a troubled man in his book “One Trick Pony”. It took 6 seasons to actually get this portrait, and I am so so so thankful for that. The ending paralleled the season one ending. Diane tells Bojack that she doesn’t believe in deep down and that all you are are the things that you do. Bojack finally understands that. No more excuses. The end of Bojack Horseman shows that Bojack finally accepts who he is, warts and all.
Bojack saying he can’t stay to watch the show because he always wakes up before it starts, implying he had multiple near death experiences in the past from overdose but then couldn’t wake up because no one was with him that night like:
not to be dramatic but i would fucking die for character actress margo martindale
