Friend asked me for words today, with no explanation, and I just started spouting this for about ten minutes.

FUCK it makes me so angry how radqueers refuse to even acknowledge they have done ANYTHING wrong. They refuse to acknowledge what people on their side are doing. They're fucking ignorant and disgusting and I hate all of them so much. "Not all of us are like this" THEN TALK ABOUT THE ONES WHO ARE. TALK ABOUT THE ONES YOU DON'T SUPPORT AND THE FLAWS YOU ALL HAVE. UGH.

I had always assumed the opposite- that the "hot take" industry/phenomenon would continue for a much longer period, as we found new things to argue about and occupy "The Discourse". But maybe the stagnation is due to the fact that despite our having discussed certain topics to death (immigration, race, etc) they still persist and we can't do anything about them? Thus, talking about them over and over is a form of collective anxiety management, or less charitably, emotional masturbation, where we pretend that endless discussion is an acceptable substitue for action because we want to believe that words and discussion alone can have material consequences.

The homogeneity of the takes themselves can probably be attributed to groupthink, but also a fear of creativity and the associated fear that our ideas will be bad and will result in a loss of social status.

Singing from the same hymnal

I’m not one of those “don’t talk about politics, entertain me!” people, but it seems like so much of the media I consume - podcasts especially - have collapsed in subject matter and mostly give the same takes on the same circumscribed set of topics.

Yes, it’s good to be “relevent” whatever that means, but it’s a big world out there. It’s callous to say that the 542nd nearly identical immigration/asylum story with the same cast of stock sympathetic characters doesn’t add much to the debate, but, well, it doesn’t. Even for a pro-DREAMer and anti-wall guy like me. If your heartstrings weren’t tugged by 1-541, one more ain’t gonna help, assuming you’re listening to respectable establishment media like NPR at all. For example, regulations of all types are being rolled back at both the federal and state levels, with wildly diverse stakeholders and all manner of potential outcomes to discuss. Sure, you can pick out some discussion of these things if you are hellbent on proving me wrong, but they’re relatively few and far between.

Media will come out the other side, that I’m sure of, but my guess is that the archives will be a little embarrassing, with the 2016-2018 era (at least) carrying an “if you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all” reputation. Perhaps history does this anyway; the late ‘60s lives in the popular memory as a series of protests against the Vietnam War, retconned as both popular and inevitable, which certainly wasn’t true at the time. Perhaps the history books will collapse this era into immigrants, sexual consent of relatively plugged-in white women and maybe some dead black men, though that wave may have crested by now. But doing so will inevitably miss dozens of silent revolutions going on all around us.

Lily You Only Have Two Videos That Are Approaching 9 Million Views, AND THEY’RE BOTH FROM SIX YEARS

Lily you only have two videos that are approaching 9 million views, AND THEY’RE BOTH FROM SIX YEARS AGO!

That’s not a brag Lily, especially considering no video you’ve made since then have even come close to those kind of numbers. Your videos routinely tap out at 40K or 50K, occasionally you’ll get lucky and have a video crack a 100K. Contrast this with Joon, who’s videos are either approaching a million views or are at a million views.

Like Lily, the video about Star Wars you released the day before Joon’s video about you dropped is currently stuck at 18K. His video is currently at 489K, it ratioed you in just 5 hours of it’s release. I’m sorry Lily you can’t play the numbers game with Joon, cause you objectively will lose.

And bullshit you didn’t have to leech off better creators to get those views, because you absolutely fucking did. That’s what I’d call two videos where you capitalized on the wave of negative and often outright reactionary discourse surrounding those two shows especially SU. Unless your trying to say your better than the creators of SU or LOK, cause if so I believe the appropriate response is a hearty Lol a Lmao even.

P.S. Also Lily please, pick a fucking lane with the SU video already. Either commit to bragging about all the views it got and how successful it was or don’t. Because you can’t brag about it and then get offended anytime someone suggests it might’ve influenced the wider perception of the show.

covid-19 fandom survey

here’s something i’ve been working on for quite some time!

i’ve been curious specifically about the impact the covid-19 pandemic and quarantine has had on fandom spaces, those in them, and the culture surrounding that. i don’t know too many people so it’s hard to get a concrete answer just out of observation -- that’s where you come in!

i’ve made a google form with some basic identity questions and questions based on your experiences - negative and positive - in fandom spaces over the last year. all i ask is that you are over the age of 13 at the time of taking this survey. i implore you to take it if you are transgender, lgbt+, or a fan-of-colour. i want your voices to be heard.

here is the survey link (more info below the cut)

provided i get enough answers to the survey, i’ll use the information for a study in the future -- if not, i may just publish it all as a post here, for you all to mind.

please spread this survey if you took it already or aren’t comfortable taking it yourself!

Kids, because it is all kids and teenagers, who identify as RCTA (race change to another) don’t realize they’re racist because they’re all white kids who think the only form of racism that exists is “I hate people of color” and don’t know about micro aggressions, fetishization, and cultural appropriation.

They’re also just dealing with very normal teenage insecurities and body dysmorphia, but instead of recognizing that they aren’t happy with how they look because they’re 14, they think that looking like someone else entirely will fix them. Which isn’t a healthy mindset but is super common! But picking their ideal self image to be another race and then becoming so obsessed with another culture that you think you can change into that race? That’s very unhealthy, very damaging to their self image, and entirely unacceptable.

And the few non-white RCTA people are dealing with either internalized racism or are being just as racist as the white ones against a culture that isn’t their own.

And because these are things that originate entirely online, transrace has its own similar but slightly different ‘community.’ Equally problematic, but, in my limited online experience with both circles, seemingly made up of more young adults and definitely connected to MOGAI.

"Why can't the freaks on AO3 just go and make a site for all the gross stuff and leave AO3 alone."

Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

How new topic to fight people over

When you take off your glasses, do you fold the right earpiece in first or the left earpiece?
