my unpopular ds9 headcanon is that garak eats whole eggs like a monitor lizard
Garak lets his hair grow long and stops slicking it back during the hot cardassian summers
on my (scarse) free time I’ve been watching a lot of DS9 and of course he is my favorite
Thinking about my favourite autistic augment burying himself in fantasy. Living through maladaptive daydreaming. Only ever unmasking while ostensibly alone. Of Garak forcing his way inside in Our Man Bashir, demanding Bashir to let himself be seen. Then unmasking so much of himself in that episode as well, doing it to push Bashir away and challenging him because he does think they're too different. Only for Bashir to rise to the occassion, silently saying - it's ok, we're the same.
I'm watching ds9 and I'm so sorry people who are obsessed with secondary/supporting characters. I get it now I understand your pain I am one of you. every episode I'm like man I hope I see my guy garak this time. I miss my guy garak. and almost every time there is no fucking garak. just watched the ep shadowplay and when bashir MENTIONED garak I leaped into the air and clapped my hands and cheered. crazy behavior. good show though. I am enjoying it
And another thing I find hilarious about Garak is that - he is such a snob.
Like, Quark's too vulgar and loud for him, close range fighting is "undignified", no one can set a foot on the station without having this middle aged Cardassian criticizing their fashion choice right in front of their Bolinian salads or whatever, he debates epic literature at lunch, he has had Shakespeare for like 5 minutes and he is already quoting it during life or death emergencies.
And it's absolutely hilarious because this man chopped up his countrymen for a living.
H-9 for Garak! Imagine it, see it in your mind's eye.
I really wanted to make him more lizard-y but I don't have the skills for it yet so I had to go with what I was able to draw ;_;
I do love me some Plain Simple Garak content~
bitches hate me because of my.... bad personality.... paranoid nature... addictive tendencies......the torture basement.
ipad broken so you already know I'm drawing garak traditionally and taking a picture of it in the dark with an android camera 🔥🔥
brain’s been rattling nonstop about how my favorite album duology was waiting for me to discover garashir, because it IS about them.
röyksopp (acclaimed & iconic norwegian electropop synth artists, my beloveds) put out an album in 2009 called “Junior”. it’s a delight. it’s bright and optimistic, it’s uptempo even when it’s sad or conflicted, there’s a deep sense of drive and a pull towards the future. the duo brings in like half a dozen collaborating artists on lead vocals (robyn! karin dreijer!) and the result is so profoundly vibrant.
this is the julian album. this is the julian-as-he-projects-himself-outwardly album. julian surrounded by friends and moving too fast to think twice about what’s happening internally. julian while he’s still young and golden and nothing’s crashed down around him.
then in 2010, röyksopp releases “Senior” as a direct counterpart to Junior. it’s their only all-instrumental no-vocals album, and the tone has shifted. Senior is downtempo and sparse, it’s ambient and contemplative and dissonant even if the melody stays uncannily warm.
the sense of deep sadness and isolation in these instrumental tracks is so on the nose for garak it’s a little wild. tracks with names like “the drug” and “the alcoholic”. the empty stretching synth pads of “a long, long way” sounds like what the station must’ve felt like the first night after every other cardassian left.
It’s not a strict binary ofc, shades of both are in both albums, but the contrast between youth and experience, between unabashed optimism and tired reticence….. it’s sustaining me.
please listen to these albums and tell me what you think please
the noises that snakes make when they sneeze are 1000000% the noises cardassians make when they sneeze. imagine damar. imagine dukat. imagine garak.
I’ve been thinking about it all day.
i was getting ready for another day of spying and murdering, practicing my interrogator death stare with my piercing blue orbs. just then, enabran tain came in. “pack your things.” he said. “i’ve sold you to pay our debts. meet your new owners, the crew of deep space 9.”
bashir: I like human mystery novels :/ The trouble with cardassian enigma tales is that they all end the same way, all the suspects are always guilty
garak: yes!! but the challenge is determining exactly who is guilty of what!
so I’m about a third of the way into A Stitch In Time and I just have so many thoughts.
this is unexpectedly one of the most fascinating books I have ever read, because the circumstances of its existence (tie-in novel for established tv show, written by the actor, largely taken from his character-dev writing) create a novel that would’ve never existed otherwise.
in any other normal novel, the protagonist with a sad childhood who gets shipped off to train to be a weapon of the state, in a violent, loveless institution, would be… taking a stand against the status quo! that’s what protagonists do, they make unlikely friends and they stand up for what’s right and they change their world etc etc. yahoo. yay !
but as we good and goddamn know: garak’s not a protagonist
these flashback portions follow so many classic sf/f coming of age tropes of a young lad finding himself in a harsh new world, but instead of the main character being guided by a convenient moral compass and growing in defiance of the competitive, cruel environment– garak adapts, learns to outcompete his peers, learns to be crueler.
it’s not so much that you’re reading garak becoming worse (though he is, for sure)
it’s more that garak is drifting from being a mere product of his environment, to a perpetuator of it
Wedding Waltz commission :-)
Special thanks to @squimp who helped me SO much with designing Garak’s outfit!!!
I’ve graduated from art school! I’m really enjoying my summer break and allowing myself time to recover from creative burnout. Here’s a garak & bashir painting I started months ago and just finished!
Also, keep an eye out on me possibly opening commissions again soon 👀⭐️
Based off that one post i cant stop thinking about
garak is a pathetic extremely mentally ill cringe gay man in his fourties who day drinks and abuses his prescription meds trying to fuck a twink 15~ years his junior. garak is an ex agent of a fascist state's secret police and has tortured and killed dozens of people. garak is cunty and flamboyant. garak is smarmy and a rude bitch and talks in stupid riddles. garak is terrifying. garak has done unforgivable things. garak is capable of change and kindness and affection. garak wants what's best for his fatherland. garak is a nationalist. garak wants desperately to be loved. garak cannot let anyone truly know him. garak cannot handle emotional intimacy. garak is ready to sacrifice himself for a higher purpose. garak is ready to sacrifice others for what he believes to be a higher purpose. but most importantly garak is a fucking lizard
our man bashir is also garak and the terrible horrible no good day. like he shows up clearly intending to fuck julian in the holosuite and immediately he has to put up with julian’s hot lady assistants being in his way. THEN his plans are further ruined by a transporter accident (ofc) that lets julian hit on not only kira but also dax. he is trying SO hard to be bond girl, elim gardick, and is thwarted at every turn. plus he gets punched in the face by someone who is not even julian. like his day literally only turns around when he gets shot in the neck.
Something something big embarrassing crush on Jadzia Dax as evidence that Julian has always been into older men something something
i am obsessed with this moment from what we left behind. ira steven behr is basically like, "yeah so were they buddies? ^w^" and andrew robinson in a completely deadpan, 100% serious tone just says "they fucked." he doesn't hesitate, he doesn't miss a beat. he believes in garashir with his heart and soul and that is just so incredibly awesome
