Clara couldn’t wait for fall. Summers were so oppressive in Boston. Between the layers of undergarments and underskirts and the unending humidity, it was enough to drive a person mad. But that didn’t stop her from heading in the office of the Boston Daily Spy to hear the latest news every morning.
“Morning, miss.” The receptionist greeted Clara with a smile.
“Morning, Mrs. Hughes.” you responded to the elderly woman. “Tell me, is my father available?”
“Not right now, Miss Clara. He is in a meeting but it should get done in about fifteen minutes.
“I’ll wait.”
Mrs. Hughes let her back behind the wooden railing to where the reporters worked. Clara wandered from desk to desk, picking up snippets of stories here and there. All the reporters were used to her wandering about their desks.
“Clara!” a tenor voice echoed across the bullpen.
She glanced up at the copy she was reading about a string of killings in Lowell to see Jonathan Harper making his way towards her. His sandy blond disheveled as though he ran his fingers through it constantly. His clothes smudged with whatever chemicals he used to develop his pictures.
“Jonathan.” Clara’s voice softened at the sign of the young man. She realized he had taken a shine to her, and he always made his best efforts to impress either her or her father. Which often backfired. But he was sweet just the same.
“I didn’t know you would be here today.”
“I didn’t know either. But something told me I needed to come in today. It was the strangest notion.”
“That’s your gut instinct.” Jonathan offered.
“I prefer the term ‘women’s intuition’.”
“That sounds more palatable. Come.” He offered her his hand. She declined but still followed him to his desk. His smile slipped for a moment before affixing itself once again.
“These are my latest shots.” He offered prints. Clara plucked one from his hands, holding the photo along its edge.
“How did you get such a sharp image?”
“Turns out you can bribe a horse to stand still.” His hazel eyes sparkled as he gazed at Clara inspecting his photograph. The moment broke at the sound of her father’s voice.
“It’s an interesting proposition. Perhaps we can discuss it more this evening.”
“I would like that very much, Mr. Appleton.” a soft voice with a British accent answered.
“Bring that sister of yours.”
Clara moved to meet his father and the stranger from England.

This is a beautifully written story and had me absolutely sobbing by the end 💕💕
Laying on the bench outside, you sighed to yourself as you stared up at the slowly changing sky, shivering a little from the bitter wind.
“You’re supposed to be in lesson.”
You looked up and sat up, turning to face the teacher as you gave him a small smile and a wave.
“Hey Mr Evershed.”
“Hi (Y/N), why’re you sat out here? You’ve got science, and it’s freezing.”
You shrugged a little and looked back towards where the sun had started it early descent.
“I like winter, the sun sets a lot earlier during winter. It’s nice.”
“It may be nice but that doesn’t explain why you’re not in science does it?”
You looked at him and grinned a little, and he rose a brow at you, waiting for you to respond to him as to why you weren’t in the lesson you were supposed to be in.
“I was annoyed, so I came out here.”
“Is something bothering you? Because if it is we can talk about it, I know this isn’t usually like you.”
You shook your head.
“No. Nothings bothering me really, I guess it’s just one of those days you know? Where everything get on your nerves and you don’t really want to do anything?”
You sat down on the bench of the table and Mr Evershed walked over, sitting next to you, noticing how you pulled your jacket a little tighter around yourself.
“If you’re cold come inside.”
“No. It’s alright, I like it. I’ve just been out here for a while is all.”
He nodded his head and you carried on looking out at the sunset, and you began to look around in the sky.
Mr Evershed watched your confused, trying to figure out what it was you were apparently looking for but he couldn’t find anything.
“What’re you looking for?” He asked.
You pointed in the distance behind him, and he turned around to see what you were pointing at .
“The first star. You know myth says that if you make a wish on the first star of the night it’ll come true.” You said.
“Do you think that’s true?” Mr Evershed asked you.
You hummed a little, shrugging your shoulders a little bit.
“I don’t know. I’m still trying to find out.”
“What do you wish for?” He asked.
“I’m not telling you, it might not come true.”
Mr Evershed laughed and you grinned at him, turning your attention back to the star.
You seemed so fascinated by it, so intrigued and curious.
“Do you like the stars?” You asked him.
He turned back around to face you.
“Do you?” He countered.
You smiled softly, flicking your gaze to him as you nodded your head.
“Someday I’m going to be a star, just as bright as these.”
Mr Evershed smiled softly, and he looked at you, wondering what it was you meant by that.
You seemed so happy and sure about it, he wondered maybe if it was something you wanted to do when you grew up.
“You going to become an astronaut?” He asked.
“Something like that.”
He nodded his head and you began to look around again, pointing at another star which had emerged in the sky and he couldn’t help but laugh.
He decided to leave you out here, if you were having a bad day he didn’t mind, you weren’t a bad student, and you never ditched lessons before, and since it was the last one of the day he decided it was okay.
Every day you would come tell Mr Evershed a brand new fact about space or stars, and in return he would tell you a fact about something else.
It had become a little tradition, usually you would wait until after English so you could stay behind and tell him your new fact of the day.
Even after he became acting head of Ackley bridge, you would actively seek him out.
Except unlike all the months before, today you didn’t seek him out, inside he found you sitting in reception with your head in your hands.
“Are they alright?” He asked Loraine.
“They said they feel dizzy, waiting for Mrs Paracha to come back with some water.”
Mr Evershed nodded and he walked over to you, crouching down in front of you, he looked at the floor and found small droplets of blood on it.
“Loraine tissue!” He called.
He stood up, placing his hand on your head.
“(Y/N) look up for me please.”
You slowly lifted your head, blood was running from your nose and you didn’t seem to notice, he took to tissue from Loraine and held it to your nose, tilting your head down a little.
“How’re you feeling?” He asked softly.
You didn’t reply and he sat next to you.
“(Y/N)? Do you know what’s wrong?”
Again, no reply.
“Loraine call their parents, they’re going to have to go home.”
She nodded and quickly started trying to get your parents numbers up and Mr Evershed looked at you, and he looked around.
“Come on, we’ll wait in the office.
He stood up, and so did you, and quickly you fell down on the floor.
“(Y/N)!”
He dropped to his knees and rolled you on your side.
He checked your pulse, and he turned to Loraine who was on the phone.
“They’re breathing, they’re pulse seems fine?” He said confused.
“They’ve got an ambulance coming now. Should be here soon.” She said.
He nodded and turned back to you.
“Is there anything in (Y/N)s notes about this? Has it happened before?”
“No. Never. There’s nothing in there.”
He took a deep breath and used the tissue in your hands to wipe some of the blood from under your nose.
He stayed with you until the ambulance came, and when the school day came to a close he grabbed your bag and made his way to the hospital, standing by the reception desk.
“Hi I had a student brought in here a few hours ago. (Y/N) (L/N)?”
The receptionist looked up and gave him a small shrug and he sighed, going around to ask anyone he could if they knew where you were.
“You’re looking for (Y/N)?” A nurse asked.
“Yes, I’m their teacher Mr Evershed, do you know where they are? Are they alright?” He asked.
“They’re alright for now, I’m afraid I can’t tell you anything else due to privacy reasons, but they can tell you whatever you want.”
“They’re awake?”
The nurse nodded her head and gestured to the room where you were sat on the edge of the bed, blanket wrapped around your shoulders as you looked out the window.
“Your teachers here (Y/N), can he come in?”
You didn’t reply, and she sighed, gesturing for him to enter.
Mr Evershed walked over, and he set your bag down on the chair in the room and he stood next to the window, crossing his arms over his chest.
You didn’t even look at him, you just carried on staring out the window, and he looked at you, cannula in your nose, an IV in your arm, you were hooked up to a few machines.
“Are you alright?” He asked.
You slowly looked at him, and you shrugged your shoulders a little bit.
“What happened?”
You sighed heavily, and carried on looking out of the window.
“I’m sorry…” you whispered.
Mr Evershed furrowed his brows a little in confusion.
“For what?” He asked softly.
You stood up, walking over to the window but the wires wouldn’t let you, so you walked back over to the bed and sat down again, resting your back against the pillows.
He could see that you were uncomfortable, stressed.
You held the hospital blanket as you looked down at it all bit.
“I didn’t tell you…”
“Tell me what? What didn’t you tell me (Y/N)?” He asked.
You looked up at him, giving him a sad smile as a few tears ran down your face.
“I’m dying sir…”
Mr Eversheds arms fell to his side, and he looked at you, just staring at you in disbelief.
“I’ve known for a few years now, but I didn’t tell the school. My parents knew of course, and they didn’t say anything because I didn’t want them too.. I’m.. im dying Mr Evershed…”
Mr Evershed slowly walked over and sat on the end of the bed, looking at you.
“You’re dying..?”
You nodded your head and laughed bitterly.
“I thought maybe if I wished on stars enough it would go away. And I wouldn’t die… maybe I could live long enough to get better, but I.. I can’t..”
“You’re going to become a star one day.. just as bright as those..” he whispered.
You nodded your head.
“Yeah… that’s what I meant…”
“How long do you have left?”
You shook your head.
“I don’t know..” you whispered.
Mr Evershed looked at you.
“Can’t they do anything to stop it?” He asked.
“They can, I’m on a waiting list. But I.. my condition makes me a ticking time bomb sir, at any given moment I could just die. No warning.. in order to stay on the waiting list I have to stay in hospital.”
You looked at the window and he sighed, wipe a few tears that had fallen down his face.
“You don’t want that do you?” He asked gently.
“No sir.. I don’t. Either way, either this illness kills me, or chances are pretty high I’ll die on the table. I’d rather take my chances out there, doing things I want to do.”
You looked to the door as you mum came in and she sat next to you, pulling you into her side and you held her softly.
“Are you the teacher that was with (Y/N)?” She asked.
Mr Evershed nodded his head and she held her hand out to him.
“I’m Mary, their mum.”
“Mr Evershed, acting head of Ackley bridge.”
You mum nodded and gestured to the door.
“Can we talk outside?” She asked.
He nodded and followed her outside, watching as she closed your room door.
“I’m sorry we didn’t tell you. They didn’t want to be treated any differently from the other students, they didn’t want any to know they’re sick..”
“I understand that. I promise I won’t let anyone else know but I do have to tell my teachers, just in case. I hope you understand that.”
“Yes. Yes of course. I just… I don’t know what to do.. they don’t want to stay in hospital, I want them to, but they don’t want me to, and I suppose it would selfish of me to force them.”
“It’s not selfish to want what’s best for your own child. It’s not a selfish thing.”
Your mum sighed, running a hand down her face.
“I never thought I would outlive my own baby. My world.. but I want to respect their wishes, and let them live how they want to live.”
Mr Evershed nodded his head.
“I understand that. They mentioned about doing things they want to do, do you know what that is?” He asked.
“There’s a few things, I know they want to have a formal dance with someone that isn’t me, they want to go on a date, they want to fail a test and ditch a whole day of school. There are a few other things.”
Mr Evershed nodded his head and he looked through the little window in the door to see you looking out the window again.
“Do you know how long they have?”
Your mum shook her head.
“No… I don’t…”
“Can I have your permission to help them do some of these things they want to do?”
Your mum turned to him in shock.
“You’d do that?”
“I want to make sure they complete everything they can on that list. And if I can help them do it I want to, they’re an amazing student, and they do so much for everyone, I want to return that.”
Your mum smiled and nodded her head.
“I’d like that, thank you. And I’m sure they would as well.”
Mr Evershed nodded his head.
“I’ll leave you two alone, thank you, if it’s alright I’d like to come back tomorrow.”
“That’s perfect, please do.”
And he did, he came back the next day, and he had a bag in his hand as he spoke to one of the nurses about what he wanted to do.
And they agreed to help him while you were away for some tests.
Nurses and doctors alike helped him out everything up, and when you walked back to the room, you were stopped by your mum holding up your school uniform.
“It was a bit short notice, so I could only find this but you need to put it on.”
“Why?”
“Just do it, please?”
You nodded, taking the uniform you put it on, and a nurse took the cannula from you and your mum pushed the door open to your room.
You gasped softly, seeing the bed and everything had been moved into the corner of the room.
String lights going across the walls and ceiling lighting the room in a soft glow, and they had little stars coming from them.
“Stars.” You smiled.
“Your favourite thing.”
You looked behind you to see Mr Evershed dressed in a black suit, a white shirt with a purple tie.
“You have a purple tie this time.”
“Well, if I remember correctly someone told me that they thought I should have one because everyone should own a purple tie.”
You smiled and he smiled back at you.
“I heard that you wanted a formal dance with someone.”
You nodded your head.
Mr Evershed held his hand out to you.
“I know it’s not the same as attending prom, or anything like that, but I hope this works just the same. Something you can cross of your list.”
You beamed and took his hand.
“Thank you sir.”
He placed your hands on his shoulders, and he placed his hands on your arms, both of you dancing to the soft music in the room.
Nurses, doctors and your mum stood in the doorway watching, smiling, recording.
You gazed up at the star fairy lights on the ceiling with a smile on your face.
“You can keep them, put them up in your room, leave them up in here, whatever you want.”
You looked at your teacher.
“Really?”
“Of course, they’re for you.”
You smiled softly.
“Thank you Mr Evershed, really. Thank you so much for this.”
“You deserve to make memories, and I know it’s probably not what everyone wants, dancing with their headteacher in a hospital room, but maybe with more time we can arrange something else at the school.”
You shook your head.
“No. No, I like this. It’s nice, I’d prefer this.”
He smiled and nodded, and for the next hour you just danced around the room until you grew tired and needed to stop.
When you were allowed to go home, he carried on helping you do things from your list, he failed a test for you, he helped you sneak out of the school after it started so you could ditch for the day.
He couldn’t take you on a date, but he decided to take both you and your mum for dinner at a nice restaurant which you decided would still count even though he expressed it wasn’t the same thing.
And as time passed, he noticed how your nose would bleed more, you passed out more often, and you would be in hospital.
And that’s where you were supposed to be today, so when your mum called him asking if you were at school he was immediately worried and said he’d help with the search.
It didn’t take him long to find you, he and your mum split the list of your favourite spots and he found you at the third one.
Halfway up a tree.
Sighing, he shook his head and called your mum to tell her where you were and he walked over, standing to look up at you as you climbed on to a branch.
“You’re supposed to be in hospital.”
You looked down at him.
“I know. But I don’t want to be there.”
“You know it’s for your own benefit right?”
You nodded and he walked over, sitting on a fallen log to look up at you.
“I don’t want to die in hospital Mr Evershed, I don’t. So I don’t want to stay there anymore.”
“You had everyone worried.”
“Did you call my mum?”
He nodded and you nodded back, climbing down, you walked over and sat on the floor, sweeping your hands through the leaves in the floor, picking up a few of them to crunch them under your fingers.
“You know there’s a chance you could survive the procedure, right?”
“A small one.”
“But still a chance.”
“If I didn’t die on the table, there’s still a risk my body would reject the surgery and I’d still die.”
He looked down at you.
“Are you scared of dying?”
You titled your head back to look up at him.
“No. I’m not scared. I’ve had a lot of time to accept that people die, and that’s okay. When I die I’m going to be the brightest star in the sky, so my mum, and my friends can all still see me.”
Mr Evershed placed his hand on your head, letting you rest against his leg.
“Will you come to my funeral sir? Give a speech?”
He looked down at you.
“If you want me to then yes. I’ll go and I’ll give a speech for you.”
You smiled.
“Would you still visit me?”
“I’ll visit you everyday.”
You smiled and stood up, brushing some dirt from you clothes and sat next to him.
“My mum doesn’t have anyone but me, she’s been the only one who knew about my condition. I’m glad you know, it’s been nice.”
“And we’ve still got loads of time to make more memories for you.”
Your mum arrived and she walked over, sitting next to you.
“I’ve made a lot of memories. I’m happy with the memories that I have. I couldn’t ask for anything better really.”
You grabbed your mums hand and held your hand out to Mr Evershed, and he took it.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me Mr Evershed. It really means a lot to me.”
“Thank you for letting me do everything.”
You all just sat there for a few moments before you mum announced it was time to go back to the hospital.
You held their hands as you walked, and you noticed the pulsing of your vision, and how everything seemed so much brighter.
You stopped on the edge of the road and you squeezed their hands.
“I don’t want to go alone..” you whispered.
“You’re not alone love. We’ve got you.”
You nodded your head and you looked to Mr Evershed.
Something inside of you was telling you that this was it, that when you closed your eyes you weren’t going to wake up from this.
So you reached out and hugged him tightly, and he looked at your mum who nodded and he hugged you back.
You pulled away and looked at your mum, and she looked at you.
“You know.. don’t you..?” She whispered.
You nodded your head and she hugged you tightly, lowering you both to the ground while Mr Evershed quickly dialled for an ambulance.
“You don’t have to worry about me..” your mum whispered.
She helped you lay down, and she held your head in her lap, brushing her fingers through your hair, and Mr Evershed crouched down next to you, taking your hand in his.
“The stars are nice..” you whispered.
Both of them looked up at the blue sky and turned back to you.
“They’re beautiful.” Mr Evershed whispered.
You carried on fighting the sleep, and they could see you fighting with everything you hand.
“It’s okay to let go..” your mum whispered.
“We’ll be right here.” Mr Evershed nodded.
You nodded as well and wiped some blood from under your nose and you closed your eyes, letting the exhaustion from tears of fighting finally wash over you.
You mum held you tightly and Mr Evershed stood up, running a hand down his face to clear his tears and he crouched next to your mum, placing a hand on her shoulder.
You were pronounced dead at the scene, and a few days later Mr Evershed announced to the school of your passing and with your mum’s permission and told them about the funeral.
It was on that weekend, and he wore that purple tie he had worn when he danced with you, everyone wore a purple tie for you, and the trees were decorated in those star lights.
Your mum was stood at the front, trying to contain her emotions.
“(Y/N).. they.. they Uhm.. asked Mr Evershed to give a speech. So.. Mr Evershed if you’re okay too..”
He nodded and stood up, holding the paper in his hands and he looked at it before sighing, putting it back in his pocket.
“I Uhm.. I first met (Y/N) in my English lesson when I first started, they were a bright and bubbly student. They were just so happy and excited to be there.” He said.
He looked at the picture of you on your coffin.
“They were just so happy about everything, and just loved to be doing anything, even if they knew they shouldn’t be doing it.”
A few people laughed.
“(Y/N) didn’t want to tell anyone what was happening because they were scared they’d be treated differently, it’s why no one knew what was going to happen. They had a list of things they wanted to do, and over the past couple of months we’ve been working on that list. Trying to cross everything off, and we did. We managed to do everything they wanted to do.”
He looked at your mum who gave him a soft smile.
“(Y/N) passed away happy, they weren’t scared. They told me they weren’t scared of what was going to happen, and that one day, they were going to be the brightest star in the sky. And I believe they will be, because they were bright. I wish we could change things, but I know we can’t, so I hope you’ll all join us in sharing a few memories we have with them.”
Mr Evershed pulled out a photo from his pocket and held it out to your mum.
“They wanted a formal dance, so the hospital staff and I decorated their room and we danced around for an hour, and I’d never seen someone so happy to be dancing with their teacher.”
A few people laughed, and the picture was passed around, and slowly more and more people came up to share memories.
They stayed for the whole procession, and after everyone left, Mr Evershed stood next to your mum as the sun hung lowly in the sky, nearly gone.
He held out the photo to her.
“I think you should have it.”
Your mum looked at him, wiping a few of her tears.
“You keep it. That’s your memory.”
He smiled a little and nodded, putting it back in his pocket and he lifted his head to take a breath and he stopped.
He tapped your mums shoulder and she looked up as well.
Right above a bright star, brighter than any they had every seen, one they had never seen before.
“They’re the brightest star.” Your mum whispered.
“They really are…”
Mr Evershed framed the photo, and he kept it on his desk, and he had small table set up for you in the reception as well which was full of flowers and things you loved.
And true to his word, every day he would go during the evening to visit you and he’d just stand there with your mum looking up at the same star
