idk if people have talked about this before but one thing that's really special to me about having grown up loving Les Mis is that I used to find it extremely hard to relate to Grantaire because I was an extremely idealistic leftist that didn't understand not having any ideals - but having been forced to realize just how hard it is to actually cause any change, I have gone through phases of deep pessimism that do not improve with the way the state of the world is going.

During those phases, I find myself understanding and sympathizing with Grantaire's psyche so much that I get a lot of serenity from it. And then I sympathize even more with his obsession with Enjolras, because he to me is the personification of idealism, so yes, I do venerate that version of myself, and I do believe in it even when it's hard to believe that change is possible.

I just love Victor Hugo's writing so much and this dynamic has been so helpful for me to work through my complicated relationship with activism.

something that i haven't seen people talk about much is that as much as grantaire loved and venerated enjolras, it wasn't strong enough for him to look past his cynicism for most of the brick. his love for enjolras prior to OFPD was in really only in words, as evidenced by the one time enjolras entrusted him with a task and he immediately abandoned it. in other words, he romanticized the idea of enjolras but nothing that he actually stood for. only faced by the national guard moments before death did he finally proclaim himself as one of them and gave his life for the cause. also, enjolras scorned grantaire for his cynicism the whole time but the moment grantaire finally believed, he was the one who pressed his hand with a smile and welcomed him to die with him. what i'm saying is, enjolras would've immediately welcomed and loved grantaire if he had believed in the cause earlier and even gave him a chance to prove himself, but nothing (not even his love for enjolras) could move grantaire past his cynicism until the very end

So after he is dishonored by his grandfather, he starts to try distance himself from the toxic masculinity person that Gillenomard wants him to be. So he starts to listen to ""girly music"" including Taylor Swift, and he absolutely loves her, like feral swifty.

He just adores how she talkes about love in her songs or whatever and how she's a girl power yada yada yada and he wants to be in love like she is in her songs.

Then he meets Cosette and becomes and unapologetic fan, like he talks abou how he is in love and compares his love to Cosette to lyrics of some of TS songs. To the point he doesn't even realise that Taylor is not unanimously liked by everyone who isn't a sexist biggot and there are actually legit criticism to her, he just stay that oblivious.

So when he meets the Les Amis he mentions Cosette and how he relates to Taylor songs in his love to her because she's an absolutely amazing writer who represents women of the world, and everyone just stares at him like "what?"

Then the Les Amis (Jehan and Couf being ex-swiftys) starts pointing that she does not represents women, she made a lot of mistakes and is very problematic in her white feminism aesthetic, she contributes a lot to pollution with all of the unnecessary plane travel she does, the bad conditions the workers in some of her concerts had to go through, the fact that she is very privileged since born and still a billionaire, etc.

And Marius just stares at them in shock, completely silent and embarrassed.

I saw so many people say that *insert Les Amis de l’ABC member* is so *insert Taylor Swift song* coded but like. NO. Mind you, Les Amis would’ve hated that woman, and after my fyp is plagued with these edits I cant anymore. Like do you really think that a group thats all about politics and rights would fw a woman as problematic as her? NO. I won’t begin the whole rant of points on how and why she’s problematic (although I could) but long story short, NOT A SINGLE LES AMIS IS SO TSWIFT CODED
