I Want A Couple More Bikes And Maybe A Cat. Would That Solve Anything? No. Would It Be Fun? Yes. Do I

I want a couple more bikes and maybe a cat. Would that solve anything? No. Would it be fun? Yes. Do I need either of these things? Also no. Would my wife approve? Again, surprisingly, no.

Rather than making cars heavier and larger for safety, what if we made them all lighter and smaller — and slowed them all down? We could reduce costs and invest elsewhere (public transit, education, healthcare, etc.) Cars have a place, but by and large we’ve built American society in a way that cars are a *requirement* rather than an *option*. With reliable and efficient public transit, cars can become a choice — rather than the only way of getting around.

Stretching + post-workout recovery are things I never had to do when I was younger. But it’s now a vital part of my routine. Not surprising I guess but still a funny thing to think about.

So close to a win for Tadej… I think he got blocked on the climb and then was looking for a wheel to follow. Was hoping to see him do some magic on the final climb and pull a gap but alas, no such luck. Great race!

“It may seem arcane, but the lack of roundabouts in suburban and rural America is a big cause of deaths. Replacing intersections would save thousands of lives a year. The spread of stroads, four-lane highways that sit next to shopping malls, mixing pedestrians and cars turning out into traffic with heavy vehicles travelling at 50mph, is dangerous too.”

Excerpted from “What to do about America’s Killer Cars” published in The Economist on Sep 5, 2024.
