read the new one piece chapter, and when i tell you i literally screamed in my pillows, rolled around and onto the floor and cried, i am not exaggerating in the slightest

he’s a 43yr old goth, gay swordsman, who wields a sword with a giant (and extra asf) jeweled up cross that’s quite literally almost as big as he himself, wearing possibly one of the most actively homoerotic and goth outfits in all of One Piece —which is saying something— with his goddamn tits out AND a cross necklace that’s actually a small dagger. Mr. “i totally have a thing (😏) going on with a Yonko, one of the literal most powerful people in the world, and have the confidence and ability to act dismissive and annoyed by it”, who also randomly accidentally adopted a pastel goth ghost lesbian and an endearingly dumb, jock swordsman gay who just so happens to be the guy who promised to defeat him. they both just show up at the motherfucking castle he lives in his house and he can’t be bothered to kick them out so they just move in and he takes care of and does stuff with them.

He can’t be bothered to show up to meetings for his job for the literal government, and when he does he pretends to be asleep. He naps in his coffin boat —that’s only light source is his weird ass abundance of candles— and if anyone wakes him up he just cuts their fucking ship in half- because he can and how fucking dare they wake him up? he doesn’t actually care about his job for the government and he only took it to get them off his back, and he’s most likely the strongest of all the warlords (AN: excluding Blackbeard cuz i hate him and i like pretending he doesn’t exist :3)

he’s weirdly yet charmingly posh, he makes reading the newspaper look regal, he farms with the murderous monkeys on his island that he tamed, he’s majestic as all fuck, absolutely gorgeous and the goddamn best swordsman in the world

Who is Yamato?

Okay so maybe you have heard of One Piece trending, or mentions of "Yamato's Trans!" or "Yamato confirmed on Pride month!" and blah blah, and maybe are confused. Or maybe you have heard nothing. so anyways, who is Yamato?

Bear in mind that, being the series as big as it is, I am going to skip A LOT of background information and will mention spoilers and all that stuff. some of it will be things already covered by the anime, and some stuff from the manga, alright?

Here is Yamato.

He is the son of the main villain of the Wano arc "Kaido King of the Beasts." (and an important ally to the heroes.)

You will notice I said He. that is because Yamato is a man. And that is based on the fact that he was first described as Kaido's son. First introduced himself as "kaido's Son". has specifically dreamed of modelling his life after an important male character called "kozuki Oden" and, whenever characters who know of him talk of him, they use male pronouns.

As a result, as you can (sadly) predict, this has created a lot of inflamatory discussions in the One Piece fandom (to put it in charitable terms). With some people reffering to Yamato as trans, while the other half claims this is the west imposing a reading and that it is either a translation issue (some even claiming the translator is changing it when the original japanese does not reffer to him as male, though from what I heard of the original this claim is dubious at best.) or that he is supposed to "grow" out of "wanting to be Oden".

I am not going to discuss the topic of trans issues in general and wont even attempt to pretend I know anything about queer and/or trans issues in japan (tho I can tell you that any claims that "LGBT+ issues is a western only issue" is bull) and I am not even here to tell you wether Yamato is a good example of a transmale character. I am here to tell you that the main source material (the manga) has so far consistently reffered to Yamato as male, with the only exception being very specific situation. Meanwhile, the biggest evidence against Yamato being Trans so far has come from minor side material that, in the great hierarchy of things, probably had no input from the author Eiichiro Oda.

That is great and good, but then why are people saying "Yamato trans confirmed"? because of this scene in Chapter #1052 (yes, you read the number correctly. And Yamato was only introduced relatively recently)

When offered a bath, Yamato very clearly rejected Nami's offer on the basis that "there are no mixed baths" (IE, "well, as a man I cant bath in the women bathroom but thanks for the offer") while Okiku accepts (Kiku is a whole other post, but she is also trans, tho the discussion there was wether she was a crossdresser or trans and I will leave it at that)

And that is followed by (CW Nudity)

Yamato bathes with the men while Okiku bathes with the women.

Why does this confirm it? Because a lot of the ammunition against Yamato being Trans was "it's a bad translation" or that "Yamato will stop being a man when the arc finishes". And now we have something that MOST DEFINITELY CANNOT POSSIBLY BE A MISTRANSLATION because we have HALF A GODDAMN PAGE with Yamato VERY CLEARLY BATHING WITH THE MEN and VERY CLEARLY FEELING MOST COMFORTABLE IN THE MEN BATH.

Do with this info what you will.

Talking with Robin about books, working out and being a muscle headed himbo with Zoro, being over all goofy and playful with Luffy, listening to Usopp’s stories and lies, playing with and doting on Chopper, Fanboying and being overall hyped about any new Franky inventions, joking with Nami and telling her any cool navigation things from Oden’s journal, laughing (way too loudly) at Brook’s jokes and singing along with him, joking with and bugging Sanji with Luffy and bonding over their shitty dad’s locking them in exploding cuffs and being an annoying yet endearing little brother-like figure to Jinbe and asking to hear his stories..

like, hey, im not gonna be yelling at anyone over it, im not a dick, but just.. law met luffy when he was 17 and even post time skip, 19 and 26 is still a weird and creepy age difference

like, even beyond my personal headcanon that luffy is aromantic and the fact their dynamic just isn’t to my taste, ultimately their age difference just feels really icky to me

I genuinely, honestly cannot believe Oda is committing to this. Like, I was afraid. Really, really afraid, to the point where I kind of didn’t want Yamato to join the crew, despite how much I like him, because I was sure Oda would not continue writing him as trans. That he would put him in the girls’ quarters and have him included in girls’ activities, and I didn’t want to see that. I like him too much to resent his characterization for the rest of the series.

But Oda put both Yamato and Kiku in the baths with men and women respectively. None of the other characters treat this as anything noteworthy, except Brook and Sanji. He specifically drew a panel explaining why, that there are no mixed baths and that’s why Yamato can’t join Nami, and I am so grateful. I cannot describe how relieved I am.

I think he’s going to continue like this. I genuinely believe this now. And now I want Yamato to join the crew even more.
