I’m definitely not a blubbering mess thinking about Jinx believing she’s this actual curse on people’s lives, an actual literal jinx. That if Silco and Isha hadn’t found her then their lives would’ve been so much better. That she ruined their lives. That without her, they would still be alive and all that shit.

Because that’s not true.

She was this bright, colorful splatter of paint that made both of their lives so much better and neither one of them would’ve traded the time they had with her for anything, because they loved her so goddamn much.

Even though she wasn’t Powder to them and only Jinx – she was in a no way a jinx to them or their lives.

ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:

if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?

what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.

the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?

people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...

all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads

i feel like the youth should be reminded that the point of shipping is not for a ship to become canon. the point of shipping is to collect all the canon crumbs like starved mice, run away cackling and make some fun little scenarios with them just for the hell of it.

tbh alicent being a shit mother is such an important thing to me. all of her relationship with motherhood.

since i could talk i always said i didn't want children. the adults laughed at me everytime, this stupid little girl, saying i just have to wait. it'll change when i get older. i'll see the appeal, apparently. of course i don't see the appeal still, no matter how old i am. but i noticed how assumed it was of me, expected even, that i didn't know shit and there's some secret parental gene that would manifest.

that's young alicent holding little crying helaena and wondering why she doesn't feel anything. if she's deficient in some way. if maybe she can make herself do it long enough, or hard enough, she'll settle in. and guess what? she fails. she doesn't settle in. she grows to love her children in time, they came out of her, of course she loves them, but she never gets better at handling them. with no help from either her husband or her father, she fails even harder.

my mom, who always dreamed of children, told me how scared and disoriented she was when i was born (her first). all the books she read didn't mean shit in that moment. and she's a happy mother, one of the best parents i know, but she worked SO HARD for it. saying that's just her maternal nature is directly spitting on all the blood and guts she poored into this. it's a hard-won satisfying job when you want it, it's hell on earth when you don't.

Okay, this might be an unpopular opinion, but if you want to combat the spread of misinformation then you have to let go of any belief that people not talking about an issue means that they don’t care. The only way to reduce the spread of misinformation and disinformation is to research claims before you spread them, and there is so much information constantly being thrown at people through social media and the 24 hour news cycle that it’s impossible to fact check every claim. The same can be said about AI generated images, if you look closely then you can notice certain tells that something is AI generated but no one really has the time to analyze every single image that crosses their path.

If we expect people to talk about and spread information on every social/political/economic issue that occurs then the result will be that people will spread misinformation/disinformation because they will not have the time or mental capacity to research every single thing that happens on Earth just to make sure that they aren’t being fed incorrect information.

Only researching claims that set off a red flag or seem incorrect doesn’t actually do much to prevent misinformation, because there are plenty of claims that will seem correct on the surface or that will align with your view of the world that you won’t think to research. You have to research every claim if you want to avoid misinformation, and you can’t research every claim made by someone online.

The only solution is to accept that some people aren’t going to talk about certain issues, not because they don’t care, but because they have chosen to focus on other issues for the time being and don’t want to talk about an issue that they don’t know much about. And we really need to stop treating that like a bad thing. If you spread yourself too thin then you’re not going to accomplish anything. It’s actually good to have people devoting themselves to learning about and fighting a specific issue, that’s how progress is made.

“the met gala is the primary symbol of all that is wrong in society” is a pretty conservative take
