Harriet The Spy

Harriet the Spy

Ha, look at these youngins. So this is a movie I was obsessed with, the colors and what I remember being an active city but also quirky neighbourhood background for Harriet’s adventures. There was a lot I liked and connected to with this is film; I too had mostly been looked after by a caretaker because my parents worked, only child, high observations—thou it would be about two decades before I’d ever have mayonnaise and I don’t think it's with (baloney?—can’t remember). This film I would say has an extremely unrealistic ending and definitely not the best lessons for a kid; she’s mean to her friends and then lies to get them to be friends with her again? Thou….maybe accurate--John Mulaney: cliques

Another possible reason I hold this movie on a higher pedestal than it probably deserves the part where everyone hates her. Being bullied when I was younger and being sent to a psychiatrist to find out why I’m upset was shown as stupid in the movie and was stupid in real life (thank goodness the world is not the suburbs) but this is a small upswing, and on some level there was something wrong with Harriet—a little narcissism and grandeur, but that’s not important. The points I will focus on was while it had an unrealistic ending it was overall a film about someone quirky not necessarily a genius or a princess but someone a bit outside the box who had friends who were also a bit outside the box and looked at how being outside the box was a good thing

Professor Flitwick

image

Professor Flitwick, my Head of House, was all I love about Ravenclaw. A proven underdog, he was passionate about learning, studied hard and had some serious talent. While we didn’t get to interact with him much, he was ecstatic by Hermione’s 112% in her first year and graded it as such, which to me showed how he didn’t care about whose house you were in and pushed for all to excel. From this, I would believe that he would have been a great supporter of Hermione’s efforts during her third year to try with the time-turner and learn as much as she could, would have worked with Neville so he could exceeds with getting a N.E.W.T. in Charms after the pep-talk from McGonagall and of course was in awe of Fred and George’s final salute to Umbridge and traditional education. So thank you Sir for your true intelligence about the type of learning that is truly important, how we learn in matters of personal exploration, kindness and individual creativity.

A Little Princess

I first saw A Little Princess (1995 version) probably with my parents around the time of its release. With no film background, I will say, did a great job at ageing the film as I always am surprised to discover that it’s not as old I thought it was (something that has happened repeatedly). While somewhat a romantic, fairy-tale type story the core parts that stick with me are the beauty within the story, particularly when Sarah and Becky are imagining a great feast and the colors of India in the very beginning of the film.

A Little Princess

The images created in this film are stunning and completely breathtaking on their own and an amazing job is done using the colors in the fil to show the contrast between what we want our world to be like and what we don’t, the stories are even more real. Yes, the fairy-tale elements of her father remembering her just before she’s about to be arrested (she’s a child but ok), and dramatics of him ending up next door to where she lives, and how regardless of everything she insists on being a kind princess are all good and honorable it is the story of the neighbor that hits the most. Both the bleakest, most realistic, connecting, accurate and somewhat breaking is the father next door who tries to be kind during a war and is grateful for closure when he loses his son and his surrogate son (and in a way granddaughter). I think this is why I saw it with my parents, and so frequently. While there are many stories that accurately portray war, this is one that focuses on being kind in the homefront and probably portrays what they experienced living separated, but closely connected to war and genocide.

There was no good photo to symbolize the story of the neighbour, but part of the theme of kindness is quoted below

Another unrelated shout-out that connects to a Little Princess to me, shout out to Shirley Temple who will never be bested even by those who manage to get their pets Instagram famous

Kevin Malone

Kevin’s Best Moment: Season Nine, Episode Fourteen: Vandalism When he stands up for Angela and Oscar to Senator Lipton. First, nicely thanking him for the food, then telling the Senator that he sucked, before complimenting him again on the food.

“You’re, like, a terrible person. These guys care about you, and you’re just using them.”

Kevin Malone

Kevin’s “Worst” Moment: Season Seven, Episode Nineteen: Garage Sale When he lets Darryl and Andy "play" him with his incomplete Dallas board game where they frustrate him by playing by whatever rules they want and he storms off. Only for us to see later that was all part of his plot to get the full $30 gamble.

Kevin’s Best Line: Season Six, Episode Five: Niagara Part 2. "The peeing is fast, Oscar. It's getting my tie back on."

Kevin’s Most Memorable Moment: Season Nine, Episode One: New Guys

Kevin runs over a turtle.

"Saves him" by gluing his shell back together with parts of his shell, part of a key chain, a spoon, bottle cap, yogurt lid, mini coffee creamer container.

Crushes him again by leaning on him with this knee.

Patches up the turtle again, mostly with a helmet.

Only to realize the turtle was probably dead the whole time.

Gabe Lewis

Gabe’s Best Moment: Season Seven, Episode Sixteen: PDA

When he designs the Treasure Hunt for Erin for Valentine’s Day. There’s a jigsaw puzzle, she gest to visit Darryl, he puts up stars for her, gets her sparkling cider (not champagne) and a cookie that brings her right to him.

Gabe’s Worst Moment: Season Seven, Episode Twenty-Five: Search Party Part 1

When he signals to Toby and Jim if they would ‘wrap up’ Kelly’s interview and then explaining to her that she’s not qualified or considered a serious candidate.

Gabe’s Best Line: Season Eight, Episode Four: Garden Party

In response to everyone thinking Andy throws the Garden Party to impress Robert California (as we see later it was more to impress his parents) Gabe gets annoyed because that’s a ‘classic Gabe move’

“Hey Andy, how about you don’t steal my business strategies and I won’t dress like my life is just one long brunch” (Season Eight, Episode Four: Garden Party)

Gabe’s Most Memorable Moment: Season Seven, Episode Fifteen: The Search

When Gabe sets these ground rules for the Caption Contest

1.      No captions that insult the company

2.      No pop-culture references

3.      To use the stick-quips

Clark Green

Clark’s Best Moment: Season Nine, Episode

When Dwight tells him “ The bubble wrap is the only thing that is stopping his suit from getting wrinkled. These meetings are all about presentation”

And he responds “that’s actually really smart—God, if only there was any other use or situation for that kind of knowledge”

Clark’s Worst Moment: Season Nine, Episode Two: Roy’s Wedding

When he uses Erin’s gullibility to get her to his apartment alone for a “reporting job”

Clark’s Best Line: Season Nine, Episode Eleven: Suit Warehouse)

When describing Jan’s sexual appetite “Women reach their sexual peak at whatever age Jan as last week. I mean, if it was….like making love with a wild animal. But not like a cougar, like you might think.. It was…uh…like a swarm of bees. Bees that just find something wrong with every hotel room”

Clark’s Most Memorable Moment: Season Nine, Episode One: New Guys

When he walks right across the slack rope

Dobby, the Great House Elf

In the beginning, the middle, and I’m sure to his end, had his final moments not been so serious and painful, Dobby could easily be considered very annoying. He wouldn’t listen and didn’t fully think things thru, making things a lot harder and sometimes more dangerous for Harry. But while I would consider him an adult, just with all the pitfalls of hanging out with a toddler, Dobby was fantastic and a great role model for those who are trying to accept themselves.

image

While at first Dobby loves Harry for being the boy who lived, his admiration for Harry grows more overtime for the simplicity of Harry treating him as an equal, something that Dobby didn’t experience in his life before and wouldn’t experience much in his lifetime at all. Overtime Dobby begins to love and appreciate himself more, becoming someone who stands up to bullies and is always there for his friends but he shows how rough of a battle it is. While he has always wanted his freedom, he wasn’t able to take the 10 galleons a week and weekends off provided by Dumbledore for wages thinking it to be too much, and wasn’t able to easily tell Harry about Umbridge considering she was his temporary master. While we can easily see Dobby’s friendship, loyalty, and equality with Harry Potter, it is the struggle to change and be yourself that is a lesson less shown or seen that we can grasp with Dobby as while Hermione and Luna were always confident with their intelligence and didn’t care for others, Dobby knew who he was and was proud but still struggled, something that is much more common, especially for young kids and teenagers.

Dobby knew what he was worth, was kind and giving, and did what was right—even against his friends. He struggled with his place in the world but knew to really only care about the opinions of those who matter

Out of body

Books are loved for how they let us connect, how they make us feel at home, and how they allow us to see experiences from others' point of view among many other reasons

But along with these, sometimes books are more straightforward, and are just there to get our feet moving, but we have to do more of the work ourselves.

So, to both the books that show us and tell us, to the books that make us imagine and have us see the natural beauty up close, to the books that let us sit back and inspire us to venture out. Cheers
