Sometime before the cave, Mystery Skulls gets called in to a case dealing with time dilation. While they’re investigating Arthur gets caught in one of the disturbances. The Arthur that replaces him though, is from the future. He has deep circles under his eyes, looks somewhat emaciated, and has a horrible burn on his jaw and chin.
He doesn’t just look horrible, he’s skittish and flinches from Lewis and Vivi’s attempts to comfort him. They try to get him to tell them how this happened, but all he says is ‘it’s fine’ and ‘I deserved it’ He’s very careful to not let them see his left hand.
Vivi and Lewis are shocked, Arthur has always been a little socially awkward, but not broken like the man they see in front of them. When Vivi demands to know how he could have possibly deserved the burn his answer chills her: “Because sorry isn’t good enough”. He’s not just parroting, he believes this.
The dilation shifts again, and they have their Arthur back. He couldn’t tell them much, he was in a place he’s never seen before, probably on a case. They don’t tell him about the future Arthur they saw.
They talk amongst themselves later and decide that since they would never have let that happen to him, at some point he must have separated from the group and got into a highly abusive relationship. They resolve to never let that happen. Anyone showing interest in Arthur is chased off. Anytime Arthur thinks about quitting, they pressure him into staying. It’s for his own good, they’ll protect him.
Fast forward after the mansion.
The gang is ostentatiously back together. The boys put on a face for Vivi, but the moment her back is turned Lewis is hostile towards Arthur. He hasn’t forgiven him, can’t forgive him. And Arthur just takes it. He deserves it, after all.
At one point the blond snaps and starts apologizing repeatedly. Lewis, never in a good mood when Vivi isn’t around, grabs him by his chin and forces Arthur to look him in the eyes. “SORRY? YOU MURDERED ME! SORRY ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!: Arthur jerks back reflexively, and Lewis can see where his hand left a burn. A very familiar burn.
The triggered memory causes him to look, really look at Arthur for the first time since his death. And he realizes he’s seen this Arthur before. Somehow in his rage he hadn’t noticed how far Arthur had gone. Vivi had missed it too, between her own grief, then jubilation at his return. He remembered those dark marks under his eyes, and now that he thought about, couldn’t remember the last time the mechanic had eaten. Worst, he remembered the completely broken look in Arthur’s eyes. He’s not apologizing anymore. He’s not mad about his new injury or ever that concerned about it. He’s even gone beyond fear.
He believe he deserves it.
And it makes Lewis sick to realize the abusive person he and Vivi swore to protect Arthur from all those years ago was himself.
So true.
