You Know What’s Funny?

You know what’s funny?

In the early ‘10s there was this idea of ‘color blindness’ among white people- not actual color blindness but the sentiment, ‘I don’t see race’ as a solution to racism. We kind of realized that saying that doesn’t actually solve anything? It usually just makes you refuse to acknowledge racism exists both in you and the world around you ie ‘I can’t be racist, I don’t even see race. I just see people <3 The lack of black people in my employment is merely a coincidence and I’d totally hate white illegals immigrants just as much as their nonwhite counterparts it’s just about respecting the law.’ Acknowledging race to them was often, ‘being the real racist.’

We now have a situation where people are ‘sex blind’ they don’t even see female people they just see people <3. And what’s funny is race is significantly more ambiguous- there’s actually arguments one could make about not referring to race during discussions of police brutality. I’d disagree with those arguments but they’d at least have some vigor, meanwhile abortion bans exclusively impact people based on sex but we’re supposed to pretend it’s effect is on this general notion of ‘people’. ‘People affected by police brutality’ and ‘people with the capacity to become pregnant’ come from the same damn place.

"Men in dresses are seen as bad, but women in pants aren't!"

is not the statement that "men can't be feminine but women can be masculine in society" that you think it is.

Let me introduce: women with facial hair. Full beards. Mustaches. Bald women. Bodybuilder women. Women with visible body hair. These aren't "more acceptable" than men in dresses.

Pants don't have a gendered association anymore, while dresses do. There is something to be said for that, but it certainly ISN'T "masculine women are acceptable now."

We always have the whole "Listen to sex workers" "Listen to POC" etc which of course is brilliant, listen to the victims of an industry/culture, but sometimes all it takes is to listen to the benefactors of an industry and people still don't wanna do that

“I’d like to really show what I believe the men want to see: violence against women. I firmly believe that we serve a purpose by showing that." Bill Margold, Porn actor and producer, in reference to the porn industry, 2007.

They aren't quiet about any of it. They never have been. It's amazing how some people still manage to pretend they don't see and hear it.

you are a bad person if you didn't believe the gaiman allegations the first time.

See now I know you’re for sure scrolling through my blog lol.

I mostly think it’s fine to leave the conversation there because A. My information is very likely out of date and while I think anyone in a given industry (especially as a figurehead) is unlikely to talk shit about it because it puts their job security at risk, it’d be useful to hear the current concerns in the industry. And B. On the points that matter I don’t think we particularly disagree. I don’t think any industry should be treated as above scrutiny, especially from left-leaning people and groups. It’s gross seeing how supposed leftists reaction to fucking McDonald’s workers being overworked, underpayed and making a penny on the bosses billions their reaction is rage, they’re indignant and want to fight. But the same people when told about abuses in the sex industry respond with apathy. We should be working harder to stop all exploitation in society in every shape it takes in every industry.

Nitpicky hyperonline post

Tbh it’s a bit weird when I see Radfem posts about the trans-ification of tomboys that say that they’re ’turning them into men’. Because you know, they’re not? It’s a quibble but it’s worth remembering when that 20 year old draws random vaguely masculine female character with top surgery scars, that isn’t an act of sex bending. Mind, there’s a long history of sex bending in fandom spaces- it’s a fictional space so it’d be really easy to go, ‘this is x as a male’, but they go out of their way to keep the character female and advertise cosmetic surgery as a way to make them ‘more themselves’. Admittedly this frames the whole thing as deeply sinister- I don’t think people saying ‘hormones would save them’ have actually thought about what that statement implies or who it benefits.

The way Trans Posts will switch rapidly from ‘if you’re not with us, you’re with the fascists’ (implying that you don’t actually have to believe in any of their bullshit you just have to hate the alt right more to count as on their side. Which. I repeat most Rads voted for Harris.) To ‘if you even toe the party line you’re against us’ (Which turns away any potential allies for perceived moral purity within the movement. It means anyone who doesn’t think twaw is turned away from the movement). It’s almost dizzying.

That wasn’t the original argument. Op didn’t say, ‘JK Rowling does a lot for women but her posts are bad’ it says ‘Rowling isn’t a feminist just Gender Critical.’ That’s why her actual feminist actions are relevant in this conversation in the same way it’d be relevant to bring up The Carnegie Foundation if we were talking about his views and influence on education (but obviously not if we were talking about all the horrible shit he did for workers rights.)

j.k. rowling is probably the biggest example of why i say that TERFs and GC’s aren’t the same group of people and they have a different orientation towards enforcing patriarchy. because rowling isn’t even pretending to be a “feminist.” she never posts about feminist politics. she’s a straight woman doing what they do best i fear (derogatory).

like i really hope you understand those people really really REALLY believe WHOLEHEARTEDLY that you can escape misogyny and oppression if you try hard enough. and if you can't, that's because of your lack of effort. it is your fault, your individual fault you're oppressed. don't ever think about reaching out to other women and helping each and fight against sexism together. do NOT gain class consciousness, only think about yourself. you're NOT like those weak women, they deserve the oppression but not you!!!!!!

I have preestablished biases and beliefs about the world, I acknowledge that and am willing to adjust with new information shared.
