So, I saw this image on Facebook, and it was supposedly showing what Queen Nefertiti would have looked like in real life:
Now, I thought this AI generated garbage was just truly terrible on a number of levels; first off, she looks wayyyyyy too modern - her makeup is very “Hollywood glamour”, she looks airbrushed and de-aged, and as far as I’m aware, Ancient Egyptians didn’t have mascara, glitter-based eyeshadows and lip gloss. Secondly, her features are exceptionally whitewashed in every sense - this is pretty standard for AI as racial bias is prevalent in feeding AI algorithms, but I genuinely thought a depiction of such a known individual would not exhibit such euro-centric features. Thirdly, the outfit was massively desaturated and didn’t take pigment loss into consideration, and while I *do* like the look of the neck attire, it's not at all accurate (plus, again, AI confusion on the detailing is evident).
So, this inspired me to alter the image on the left to be more accurate based off the sculpture’s features. I looked into Ancient Egyptian makeup and looked at references for kohl eyeliner and clay-based facial pigment (rouge was used on cheeks, charcoal-based powder/paste was used to darken and elongate eyebrows), and I looked at pre-existing images of Nefertiti, both her mummy and other reconstructions. While doing this, I found photos of a 3D scanned sculpture made by scientists at the University of Bristol and chose to collage the neck jewellery over the painting (and edited the lighting and shadows as best as I could).
Something I see a lot of in facial recreations of mummies is maintaining the elongated and skinny facial features as seen on preserved bodies - however, fat, muscle and cartilage shrink/disappear post mortem, regardless of preservation quality; Queen Nefertiti had art created of her in life, and these pieces are invaluable to developing an accurate portrayal of her, whether stylistic or realistic in nature.
And hey, while I don't think my adjustments are perfect (especially the neck area), I *do* believe it is a huge improvement to the original image I chose to work on top of.
I really liked working on this project for the last few days, and I think I may continue to work on it further to perfect it. But, until then, I hope you enjoy!
Remember, likes don't help artists but reblogs do!
@cedarwhisp I figured it out!
ok, so, I skimmed the book and:
essentially, Clearsight never actually CALLS them “BeetleWings”, she simply compares them to beetles:
[Image ID: Picture of a book page reading “Like dragonflies, she realized remembering the delicate insects darting across the ponds in the mountain meadows. Or butterflies, or beetles.” end image ID]
(entry from The Lost Continent, Prologue)
So I checked the conversation with Lady Scarab, and SHE never mentions it either!
In fact, what SHE says is:
“Maybe they weren’t called SilkWings back then. ShimmerWings or Flibbergibbets or something in the old language, I don’t know. But Clearsight married one, and then another one when the first one died, and had an alarming number of dragonets with each one, and then their dragonets and their dragonets’ dragonets kept going, marrying Ye Olde SilkWings or what have you, until there were enough of them to be considered their own tribe. HiveWings.” (The Hive Queen, pages 182-183)
So, yes and no? I’ll have to look at The Poison Jungle, I didn’t realize they talked about it there, too.
here’s the evolution tree for reference! Also explains why Mudwings look so much like SeaWings*

i'm sorry i don't know the source of this because it was posted on reddit without credit but i'm obsessed with this
Do you ever see a post that you know you’d like if you read it but you do NOT have the attention span to read it in the moment so you like it and continue doomscrolling?
hi i really dont want to start anything so please dont take this as me trying to make an argument with you or insult you, but i thought i should let you know that a comment you left on a recent batmanisagatewwydrug post was really hurtful to me. I don't think you intended for it to be offensive at all, but i do think you didnt really think through what the consequences of your words could be. You said, in reference to a friend of yours who used to use all pronouns, that you "couldn't bring yourself" to use it/its for them because it "feels... dehumanizing," even after your friend told you she was ok with it. Please know that this is like 95% of all the conversation I have ever seen regarding it/its pronouns.
When I realized a few years back after a long time of feeling like no set of pronouns fit me that I was actually comfortable with and enjoyed it/its pronouns I was so happy, until I went in search of any positive content about it/its as preferred pronouns and discovered that even people who were comfortable with neopronouns were posting things like "I could never use it/its for someone, it feels dehumanizing, I couldn't bring myself to do it and if I met someone who exclusively used it/its I would just call them they or use their name." It was just a lot of non-it/its users reassuring other non-it/its users that its ok to misgender us because we're actually dehumanizing ourselves, without any input from anyone who actually uses those pronouns. You're saying the same things that people use as excuses to misgender us. And I really hope you aren't one of the people who would prioritize your comfort with someone's pronouns over their own, because you genuinely seem pretty cool otherwise. And I hope you recognize that "I can't use this set of pronouns on someone because it makes me uncomfortable" is a bad thing that you need to work on.
And if you do recognize that, I would then want to make you aware that you straight up don't have to tell people that. Your comment about this thing that you need to work on and that upsets people is public! I don't mean to be dramatic but I was having a relatively good day until I saw your comment. Honestly I would like you to take it down or edit that part out if you can, but I know that's expecting a lot. I just don't want anyone else to come across that comment and get sad too. I don't think you thought through the fact that you were saying "I can't bring myself to call someone it/its" on a post where preferential or exclusive it/its users can see it.
Sorry I wrote so much and sorry if I'm being dramatic, it just sucks when no one wants to use my preferred pronouns because THEY feel like it's dehumanizing, whereas I never have. I genuinely feel WAY more dehumanized by they/them than it/its by now, because I know people just use they/them so they can avoid using my preferred pronouns
If you choose to respond to this ask please dont do that if im not anon for some reason
Oh my god, I am so, so sorry!!! Please link the comment (in another ask so you can stay anonymous) and I’ll delete it immediately, I never meant to offend, and I realize that my comment was insensitive. Thank you for reaching out and explaining, please have my deepest and most sincere apologies, I am so, so sorry!! Thank you for telling me, I never want to offend or hurt, and I greatly appreciate you letting me know so I can learn and grow from this. /gen
Edit: Nvm, I found the comment and it has been deleted 👍 Again, I am so, so sorry for my hurtful words, it was never my intent to harm, and I realize that what I said was bigoted and ignorant, and I profusely apologize.
Again, I am so so so sorry for saying such hurtful, ignorant things, and I feel terrible that unknowingly ruined someone’s day, especially by saying something that transphobes say, which, as a trans person, is a horrifying thing to realize, and I feel absolutely awful that I spread that. Thank you so much for bringing my biases to my attention and correcting me, I will strive to improve, again, I am so so sorry (/gen)
Boss is asleep, cannot stop me from frogposting
lord the peasants are so loud today
Last three tribes done! Mudwings, Sandwings, and Hivewings!
I have decided that Mudwings will have splotches of green ranging from a subtle dry-grass color (rare) to a mossy green (common) to a deep forest green (uncommon), but also very rarely may be a desaturated blue (very rare).
Sandwings in this also have a rare, recessive trait that gives them venom in their fangs, though then again it is pretty rare. Standard color ranges but it also dips into the army-green area. (so the range for their darker areas is a desaturated brown to a dark yellow to an army-green)
Finally I have decided that all Hivewings have pink eyes. Why? Idk it looks cool and I’ve decided that they all have gorgeous pink eyes. Also their black areas aren’t usually a grey black but more like subtle shades of dark blue, green, purple, or very rarely red to REALLY harness those NightWing genes rather than being splotches of Just Black (since most nightwings have SOME color to them)
Plus a bonus traditional artwork of Peril because my stylus tip broke and I’m waiting on the replacements, so it’s gonna be a lot of transitional art for a bit:
