Some I Was a Teenage Exocolonist thoughts now that I've had time to process my first run:

I love that not only are you not expected to achieve a perfect run on your first playthru, it's not even possible. There are consequences for things like not going to school (mostly in the form of missed opportunities) but no one is going to grab you by the scruff and force you to do it. You're truly allowed to just be a kid living your life which of course will include making mistakes. But this message that you can come back from anything, that there's no such thing as a life ruining choice, that it's ok to not be perfect or perfectly good, that's so fucking refreshing to see in a video game. And the replacement of a good vs bad morality system with a "respect for authority" meter is just *chefs kiss* that combined with the empathy stat should be the standard for any kind of game like this, it's so genius.

Like I started my second run last night and there are a couple things I'm intentionally going to do better this time (being more efficient with gifts and paying better attention to the fetch quests) but this is the first time playing a game where I've ever felt truly comfortable with not getting everything right, or even most things. Like I've just been randomly picking an activity every month (literally rolling a d6) and bc of that my character basically never goes to class. I've already decided next run I'm going to dedicate at least one month every season to school but I don't feel pressured to restart this one like it truly feels ok and part of the intended experience to fuck up and do better next time and that's so fucking cool

sometimes a piece of media just! grabs you by the throat and says, "hey buddy! I'm gonna irrevocably alter your brain chemistry now! have fun with that!!"

and then you just ! gotta deal with that ! you guess !!

i can't lie to you i loveee bad endings sometimes. what if nothing worked out. what if the characters gave into their worst instincts. what if they became worse. what if there's truly no hope left. what will they do out of desperation? who will they become as their worst selves?

Accessibility Checker(Free Scan) : a site you can use to check accessibility/ADA compliance when making your website! it will point out what needs to be changed. it is free, but they also offer paid services if you need more help imagecolorpicker.com : hex code picker. i use this one because you can upload an image, paste clipboard, OR type in the website and it'll grab a screenshot for you! something simple that was made really well. cssgradient.io : helps you make css gradients for backgrounds or whatever else you need them for smartgb.com : a free guestbook service FC2 Counter! : free "site visits" and "online now" counters. fully customizable Unclosed Tag Checker by Alicia Ramirez : does as it says, checks for unclosed tags (although I recommend using a program that does this as you write anyways. i dont think enough otgw fans talk about the exploration of complex family dynamics that the show manages to weave through pretty much every episode. like the relationship between wirt and greg seems so innocuous in the beginning, just normal aloofness due to the age gap, but as the episodes go on it becomes clear that wirt full on resents greg and actively dismisses him as “his stepdad’s kid,” while greg openly admires/loves wirt and doesnt understand why he wont spend time with him. theres so many little moments that make the lack of reciprocity in their relationship obvious, and it literally takes almost DYING for wirt to understand that he needs to treat his brother better. like holy fuck man ill be shocked if the person who wrote their backstory doesnt have a step/half-sibling cause WOW they got it right

i think it's fucked up that there are plants that decided they wanted to eat meat

the whole point of a zine is that it's cheap to produce, amateur and homemade. if you're being asked to apply to participate in a print project, it is not a zine. if the final product is being printed and bound professionally, it is not a zine. if you are being asked to enter into any kind of licensing agreement more complex than "my work can be reproduced as part of this publication" it is not a zine. nine times put of ten if the final product costs more than $5 you have left zine country. im so serious about this.
