The JUICEBOX is my ongoing struggle project to make a useful (and *safe*) powerbank for big powerhungry costumes. I'm not there yet at all lol! But I keep hacking at it occasionally. Holds 6 rechargeable NiMH D cells- for juice to last up to full day of running leds depending on the number of lights of course, as well as the animations and colors... And brightness.. etc... Uhhh battery life depends on a lot of factors... Why NiMH though? Lipoly batteries pack more power into a smaller package but thats also what adds to the risk. So thats why I decided to go with D cells instead. If you've seen the videos of phones and laptops combusting and then imagine the abuse a costume goes through, maybe you too can reconsider strapping one of those to your flammable human body! PLUS if they're drained and you want to repower your costume NOW its easy enough to go pick up fresh ones from a store. The Juicebox outputs about 6-7v, good for servos, fans, speakers, and small motors. 5v/15A UBEC to run mostly neopixels! Up to 200 at full power if you're crazy. 3v voltage buck for sensors and microcontrollers. I used a different style of connector for each output for foolproofing, its not attractive but hey at least you wont fry anything by plugging it into a higher voltage output xD this is still something i'll be redoing because I have some other ideas Id like to try. Each output also has a fuse so if you cant resist the tempation to plug in a million things or miscalculated somewhere you wont overheat the pack. The enclosure is the molded EVA kind for headphones or other various gadgets so its easy to cut holes into! Unfinished things- tiny cooling fan for the UBEC, an ammeter, tiny OLED display for detailed info on power usage, and a neopixel programmed to battery life color indicator on the end of a long cable so you can route it to an easy access part of the costume, to check the juice levels at a glance. All of the code I consistenly fail to get working runs on an arduino pro mini lol If you're still actually reading this and havent fallen asleep you might be interested in my and @maddycatcosplay 's new maker discord for crafty costumers! I will ask you a thing for WW. Where do you find your inspirations for all the rad awesome outfitery for your elf dudes? So many mixes of different textiles and structures.
Inspiration is just seriously everywhere, movies, thrift stores, magazines, historical clothing reference books (especially these!). My favorite strategy is picking elements from a few different cultures and time periods and smashing them together. I think it works because I have clear ideas about the world, the sets of cultural inspirations (use a LOT of japanese, victorian, indian, and modern western styles), and the technology level (there's mass production... retail catalogs... zippers...). Errikan has this pleated samurai pants thing, leather jacket with coattails thing, and hiking boots (but taller) thing. Naroth has jodhpurs that turn into spats, a utilikilt, and a goddamn cowboy hat. Sounds ridiculous written out but I Tim Gunn that shit and make it work
GET IN ON THIS, IM MAKING A POSTERRRRR
✦❤✦ THE KICKSTARTER FOR AGENTS OF THE REALM HIT ITS FUNDING GOAL ✦❤✦
Gosh gosh gosh!! Thank you all SO MUCH for your support so far!! Last night the Kickstarter managed to hit it’s initial funding goal of 17K! The kickstarter campaign, however, is still running and will remain running until March 2nd so I’ve got LOTS of stuff planned for the extra funds to go towards!
Are you looking for an easy way to show your Magical Girl pride? If the Kickstarter hits 20K, I’ll be getting 1.5″ Enamel metal pins made so you can let the world know exactly how magical you are!
If the Kickstarter passes that…
Everyone who pledges in the tiers $50 and above will get a chance to upgrade in order to get their hands on limited edition prints made by these wonderful artists! I was lucky enough to get @wscottforbes, @quantumqstar and @mattahan to agree to create absolutely gorgeous artwork in honor of Agents of the Realm. I’ve been getting peaks at the works done so far and let me tell you, you’ll definitely want to get your hands on them!
From there, the funds will be going towards making the book even more shiny and magical than it already is!
Hitting 40K means everyone who pledged in $30 or above gets their softcovers upgraded to be foil embossed!! Talk about a perfectly fitting upgrade.
And the last stretch goal is a Foil Hardcover Upgrade available for everyone who pledged in tiers $50 and above!
The campaign still has 22 days left! Let’s keep this ball rolling!
I'm not sure why I want to talk about this so much but I DO so I'm gonna.
Saw Robocop the other night, immediately understood why it flopped but holy crap I really enjoyed it ok?? I know most people are basically disgusted by remakes out of some sense of nostalgia, and I don't care at all, usually when you go back and watch an old thing its often Not That Great (and the nostalgia critic has made a whole Thing out of this phenomenon). I didn't hate the Total Recall remake either, because I honestly feel if a story or premise is interesting there's nothing wrong with telling it again in a new way. And I think it's especially fine to do with Sci/Fi because by its very nature the genre has to constantly be updated. And so Robocop was surprisingly political?? With the heavyhanded commentary on drone use and big business manipulating our lawmakers and questions about artificial intelligence and free will and Evil Steve Jobs Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson O'Reilly lol! Dammit I just feel the need to defend it because these are all things that make it good relevant sci/fi and are definitely the same things making the movie a flop. And of course I love robots and cyborgs and Gary Oldman so its no surprise I fucking loved this movie ok. ROBOCOP.
Also saw the Lego Movie and it was seriously the best thing in the entire world. I geeked out hardest over all the explosions/fire/water/smoke being made of legos and the big fingerprint on Emmet's torso. And the plot was really impressively solid (President Business was the BEST) and so so so good seriously go see this movie.
I love movies!!
Instagram sure took their sweet time coming to Android so now *I* have to make up for lost time. Everyone loves filters, amirite? PREPARE FOR INSTASPAM.
Hooooly shit, okay, I love your art a LOT./creepin
Thanks! I don't mind the creepin, I thought that was what the internets were for? 8| Trust me, if I didn't want to share my art I'd be ALL the way under my rock instead of just partially!
Finally got my friend's scanner working on my computer (drivers were NOT cooperating) and so now I can share random sketchbook crap! I've been teaching myself Arabic calligraphy, its super difficult because derp I don't know any Arabic :p but it's also so gorgeous so I keep at it! The top one is my name and the bottom is Katherine ("Kathni" in Arabic), both written in fancified Kufi cos that's my favorite form. Eventually when I know what the hell I am doing (so, very eventually, also I'd like to find someone who can spell check for me lol) I would like to offer people's names in Kufi as a commission service... thing. Cos its SO PRETTY omg.
learning how to make things pretty with laser engraving :D (pewpew)
Sharing art from 2009 without sharing anything from 2019? Because I don't really draw like I used to. I'm sad about it sometimes, but I don't see it as having quit art. I still sketch regularly, but for years now my interests have been absolutely all the way into Making Stuff. Lots of learning and experimenting with Skills and less easily consumable content to share online...
Since I made my illustration I still like to call my Masterpiece (lol), my life changed a LOT. I changed a lot with it. The mockup of companion poster I started not long after is STILL asking me to complete it, it belongs right next to the poster of my Elf Son. I made a file of unfinished illustrations that I still Care about, this is the major one. I miss how much mental real-estate my elves took up, it was fun! But had to make room for Other things.
Stuff I've learned since drawing less: C/C++ (I'm garbage at it but I keep trying lol), Crochet & Knitting, writing small programs for Arduino, Blueprint Reading/Creating, metal machining on lathe and CNC milling machine, Circuitboard Design, Sculpting/moldmaking, Drafting slopers and clothing patterns from scratch for sewing... Next will be welding xD I want to MAKE! AND! BUILD!
How to achieve your dreams when you have 6 or 7 of them? I've abandoned two already (professional puppeteer, stage magician) but I still have only so much time on this earth! ;p
I also keep quiet these days cos I dont seem to have relatable problems. Creative block? I don't know herrrr.
When I die there will be 38,472,000 unrealized project ideas that simply cease to exist ಠ_ಠ
I'm keeping the Illustration skills in my back pocket, but it was honestlyyyyy never what I REALLY wanted to do forever, I want to do SO MANY things. I'll be 35 soon (hhhhhhhgh) and if I view my life as ONLY an illustrator then I peaked REAL early and have been Struggling since lmao! My destiny is tangential to colorful drawings. But lets be real its tough to be literally ANY kind of artist. Im just a lot busier Adulting and trying to survive/thrive in a worker-unfriendly economy with insufficient mental health care xD
ALL THAT SAID, I really do want to finish that poster, eventually xD and the elves need their story out in the world in some form. Still gotta decide what that is.
What is the hardest part about worldbuilding for you?
Logistics, PLOT... lol. Having an idea of what you want to happen with the world and characters but then trying to make it all fit and work properly... augh. Plot holes drive me so crazy in other works that I am really really obssessive about... not having them in my own work. If a question goes unanswered it needs to be deliberate. If there's a Deus Ex Machina plot twist it needs to GO (or at least have a precedent earlier in the course of events), it needs to be coherent and follow some kind of internal story logic.
Can't abide lazy storytelling *fistshake*
