we've found it folks: mcmansion heaven

Hello everyone. It is my pleasure to bring you the greatest house I have ever seen. The house of a true visionary. A real ad-hocist. A genuine pioneer of fenestration. This house is in Alabama. It was built in 1980 and costs around $5 million. It is worth every penny. Perhaps more.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Come on, Kate, that's a little kooky, but certainly it's not McMansion Heaven. This is very much a house in the earthly realm. Purgatory. McMansion Purgatory." Well, let me now play Beatrice to your Dante, young Pilgrim. Welcome. Welcome, welcome, welcome.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven
We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

It is rare to find a house that has everything. A house that wills itself into Postmodernism yet remains unable to let go of the kookiest moments of the prior zeitgeist, the Bruce Goffs and Earthships, the commune houses built from car windshields, the seventies moments of psychedelic hippie fracture. It is everything. It has everything. It is theme park, it is High Tech. It is Renaissance (in the San Antonio Riverwalk sense of the word.) It is medieval. It is maybe the greatest pastiche to sucker itself to the side of a mountain, perilously overlooking a large body of water. Look at it. Just look.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

The inside is white. This makes it dreamlike, almost benevolent. It is bright because this is McMansion Heaven and Gray is for McMansion Hell. There is an overbearing sheen of 80s optimism. In this house, the credit default swap has not yet been invented, but could be.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

It takes a lot for me to drop the cocaine word because I think it's a cheap joke. But there's something about this example that makes it plausible, not in a derogatory way, but in a liberatory one, a sensuous one. Someone created this house to have a particular experience, a particular feeling. It possesses an element of true fantasy, the thematic. Its rooms are not meant to be one cohesive composition, but rather a series of scenes, of vastly different spatial moments, compressed, expanded, bright, close.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

And then there's this kitchen for some reason. Or so you think. Everything the interior design tries to hide, namely how unceasingly peculiar the house is, it is not entirely able to because the choices made here remain decadent, indulgent, albeit in a more familiar way.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

Rare is it to discover an interior wherein one truly must wear sunglasses. The environment created in service to transparency has to somewhat prevent the elements from penetrating too deep while retaining their desirable qualities. I don't think an architect designed this house. An architect would have had access to specifically engineered products for this purpose. Whoever built this house had certain access to architectural catalogues but not those used in the highest end or most structurally complex projects. The customization here lies in the assemblage of materials and in doing so stretches them to the height of their imaginative capacity. To borrow from Charles Jencks, ad-hoc is a perfect description. It is an architecture of availability and of adventure.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

A small interlude. We are outside. There is no rear exterior view of this house because it would be impossible to get one from the scrawny lawn that lies at its depths. This space is intended to serve the same purpose, which is to look upon the house itself as much as gaze from the house to the world beyond.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

Living in a city, I often think about exhibitionism. Living in a city is inherently exhibitionist. A house is a permeable visible surface; it is entirely possible that someone will catch a glimpse of me they're not supposed to when I rush to the living room in only a t-shirt to turn out the light before bed. But this is a space that is only exhibitionist in the sense that it is an architecture of exposure, and yet this exposure would not be possible without the protection of the site, of the distance from every other pair of eyes. In this respect, a double freedom is secured. The window intimates the potential of seeing. But no one sees.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

At the heart of this house lies a strange mix of concepts. Postmodern classicist columns of the Disney World set. The unpolished edge of the vernacular. There is also an organicist bent to the whole thing, something more Goff than Gaudí, and here we see some of the house's most organic forms, the monolith- or shell-like vanity mixed with the luminous artifice of mirrors and white. A backlit cave, primitive and performative at the same time, which is, in essence, the dialectic of the luxury bathroom.

We've Found It Folks: Mcmansion Heaven

And yet our McMansion Heaven is still a McMansion. It is still an accumulation of deliberate signifiers of wealth, very much a construction with the secondary purpose of invoking envy, a palatial residence designed without much cohesion. The presence of golf, of wood, of masculine and patriarchal symbolism with an undercurrent of luxury drives that point home. The McMansion can aspire to an art form, but there are still many levels to ascend before one gets to where God's sitting.

Our houses are built with the sciences, our wall are painted with the arts.

“the arts and sciences are completely separate fields that should be pitted against each other” the overlap of the arts and sciences make up our entire perceivable reality they r fucking on the couch

Alright now this pissed me off

a screenshot of a variety article explaining that they removed a lot of sokka's sexism from the original show because the moments were "iffy"

What do you MEAN you're going to remove one of the most important aspects of Sokka's character arc in the first season? What do you MEAN you're going to remove Sokka unlearning misogyny, accepting change and embracing his role as a fighter and protector of the Avatar in order to end the war? What do you MEAN???

I find that I am always able to find people with similar traits and hobbies with me and instantly become friends without actually saying "let's be friends." Must be because all of my friends have Neurogidevervency like me so we just pick up each other's cues out of everyone else's and become friends. We're all also queer though so :/ the mystery continues.

Good way to wrap up the post and keep it on topic here

Fun fact: Hieroglyphs are a logographic system, where each character represents a word, although in some cases, two characters could join together to form a single word, like for Turquoise, which is represented with a man and a pig next to each other.

Logographic systems nowadays are systems such as Chinese Hanzi, Japanese Kanji, etc.

Emojis could also be considered Logographic, since they tend to represent a single word, rather than a sentence or a letter. i.e: 🤧 represents "sick" but it has the contextual meaning of "I am sick."

In the examples given by OP, this too, is a logographic system, though rather limited in vocabulary.

Also I think it's a shame we have an emoji of a bow and arrow, but not one of just an arrow or just a bow.

aspec are so cool bcs aro - 🏹, ace - 🃏, apl - 🍎 we got hieroglyphs!!

I've been seeing a lot about the Israel conflict with Hamas and the atrocities both sides are committing, so I guess I'll put my take out there. I know this isn't like my usual "silly haha" or "cool thing" content, but I'll resume that eventually.

CW: Personal opinions about a bloody conflict with many civilian deaths.

Personally, I support Palestine. Not Hamas. Palestine.

This is a country that the target resides in, and therefore gets blown to bits. Unlike Pakistan, they're not even providing shelter to Hamas (TMK), but Israel continues to attack civilian targets, and keeps saying "Oh, Hamas has moved to the south, so we need to attack there," whilst they kill civilians along the way.

I'm not even advocating for Hamas. Hamas is a terrorist organisation who has committed several atrocities themselves. They deserve to die. They deserve to be killed for their actions. But it should not come at the cost of innocent lives.

As always in wartimes, this is a complex situation. Neither side is morally right, nor morally wrong, depending on your perspective. But there is no denying the basic facts.

Palestine did nothing (recent) to provoke Israel to kill civilians. And both Israel and Hamas, which is not Palestine, have committed atrocities.

But hey! It's a religious war between Christians! And I'm in the Cult of the Satanic Temple! Who am I to judge them?

I'm someone who stands for civil liberties, that's who.

This feels kind of like that dress that no-one could tell what colour it was! Except on this case, no one knows which way the sweater should go!

Okay, I'm actually having a hilarious Tumblr worthy story moment right now!

My mom and her friend were saying my sweater looks like it was on backwards, and I felt like it had no difference, cuz there's no tag in the back to tell me which is the front. But I turned it around anyway to see if they could tell, and they said it was better at first, but then they said a minute later, "actually, you're right, it looks the exact same". XD

since when has a scientific model been a religion?

heliocentrism, at it's core, is simply the idea that we, and all the other planets, orbit around the sun, as opposed to the sun and planets orbiting around us.

the idea itself was persecuted by Catholics when it was first theorized, and the guy who though of it was burnt alive iirk. Galileo supported the idea and was then put under house arrest by the Pope.

how can a model of the universe, based off of scientific evidence, be religious? it just doesn't make sense.

my brain is rotting people actually think heliocentrism is. a religion??? what??? why????

girl geocentrism is outdated by hundreds of years!!! what is up with flat earthers and equating everything they don't believe in to a religion.

this was. rather Strange but i like ranting about silly things. and Space

My current password for my Secondary Discord account is 20 characters long, case-sensitive, and uses numbers in certain places as a letter substitute, plus is a variety of the base password (so even if you guess the email, you can't get into discord).

My phone passcode is a little "connect the dots" thing that android devices allow that is very unusual, but I use index fingerprints for ease of access. I will know change it to pinky fingers. No-one expects the pinkies.

“ The odds of guessing a four-digit passcode are 1 in 10,000, and tools have been used to crack iPhone codes in the past. Apple says the chances of someone having a similar enough fingerprint to unlock a person’s phone is 1 in 50,000, and a similar enough random face tricking Face ID is 1 in 1,000,000 “

that’s a really funny way of framing it, to make it look like passcodes are weak. you know what’s twice as good as the odds given for fingerprints? a 5 digit passcode! what’s equal to the odds given for Face ID? a 6 digit passcode! every time you add a digit, you multply those odds by 10.

and that’s assuming simple numeric passcodes. the odds of guessing a 4 digit, case-sensitive, alphanumeric passcode would be a 1 in 14.7 million. 5 digits is over 1 in 916 million, 6 digit is 1 in 56.8 billion. if you throw in 32 common symbols, we get 1 in 78 million, 1 in 7.3 billion, and 1 in 689 billion. those numbers climb pretty quickly the more digits you add.

i know these aren’t the only issues with passcodes (like 24% of americans using a variation of just 8 common passcodes), but if you’re trying to push people to biometrics i guess you wouldn’t really care for that nuance anyway
