đŹđ§ William Claude Rains took a hiatus from acting when WW1 broke out and volunteered to serve in the London Scottish Regiment. In November of 1916, he was wounded in a gas attack at Vimy. He lost 90% of vision in his right eye and suffered vocal cord damage. He never returned to combat, but continued to serve with the Bedfordshire Regiment. By the end of the war, he had risen to the rank of captain.
Arthur is ticking off The Sergeant, who is one of the main antagonists from my cartoon, Arthur McBride. John Jenkins and Darby are both worried for Arthur, knowing that he is probably going to get clobbered.đ Angus on the other hand canât help but chuckle to himself. He takes pleasure in seeing Arthur irritating The âOlâ Haggisâ.
Hereâs some drawings that I did a while back of my OC, Arthur McBride. The cartoon with his name as the title was the first cartoon that I stuck with for years. My style for these characters used to be different years ago, but I think this midcentury modern one was an improvement.
Anyway, this series was based on an actual Irish folk song about a man named Arthur McBride and his cousin who are confronted by a Sergeant of The British Army who ended up trying to force them to enlist. The song ended with a cliffhanger, but I thought hey, what if The Sergeant did end up forcing them into the Army and then Arthur tries to get The Sergeant to boot him out by driving him insane.đ I then ended up adding a couple more friends for him, a rival, and added more to the stories as well. I originally had them in an all cartoon animal universe, but then I changed it, and now there are humans in the universe as well.
This is a drawing of a logo I made for my Arthur McBride cartoon, with some of the characters around it. This is only my second post on here, but you can see more of my artwork on Instagram, Deviantart and Cara. My username is IrishBeckyCartoons on all of them just like on here.(Iâm actually American, but Iâm obsessed with my Irish heritage)
Elizabeth Southerden (1846-1933) dragoon Rgt outside Saint-Malo door (Dinan) Britanny , France
Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, later Lady Butler is arguably the greatest British military painter of the nineteenth-century, who in her own words 'never painted for the glory of war, but to portray its pathos and heroism'. She was born in Switzerland and trained at the South Kensington Schools in London and in Florence at the Accademia di Belle Arti. She initially focused on religious subjects but was inspired by the work of Jean Louis Meissonier, in Paris in 1870, to paint battle scenes. The Roll Call, depicting the courage and endurance of Grenadier Guards mustering after an engagement during the Crimean War, gained critical and popular success when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874. It was fĂȘted by the Royal Family, and her patron Mr Galloway, who had commissioned it, was obliged to surrender the painting to Queen Victoria, where it remains in the Royal Collection. In 1877 she married Colonel William Butler and travelled to the far reaches of the Empire. When her husband, recently honoured with a knighthood and promoted to Brigadier General, was invalided home from his post at Wadi Halfa in 1886, they settled near Dinan in Brittany where To the Front was painted. It is set during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1) and depicts the French Dragoons heading to the front through the Porte St Malo in Dinan. It is unusual in the artist's oeuvre in its French subject matter and in the inclusion of women and children. Members of the Butler family and household are depicted in the crowd, and the woman in the lower-left corner waving a handkerchief is a self-portrait. Next to her is her daughter Elizabeth, and the two small boys further along the row are her sons Patrick and Richard. The picture was completed at the family's home in Wicklow, Ireland. Following her husband's knighthood in 1886 this was the first work she exhibited at the Royal Academy as Lady Butler.
