Sirius: you’ve always been jealous of me!

Regulus: jealous of what? Of your lack of responsibility? Your immaturity? Your total disregard for other people's feelings?

Regulus: your lack of any critical thinking? Your ignorance? Your unawareness to anyone but yourself?

Regulus with lyrics from “Heaven knows I’m miserable now” by The Smiths;

“I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour. But heaven knows I'm miserable now”Regulus when he was with James, and after

“I was looking for a job, and then I found a job. And heaven knows I'm miserable now” Regulus getting his jobs with mr no nose

“In my life, Why do I give valuable time to people who don't care if I live or die?” Being around the death eaters and the shady lord

“Two lovers entwined pass me by. And heaven knows I'm miserable now” Regulus when Jily got together

“I was looking for a job, and then I found a job. And heaven knows I'm miserable now” Regulus working with the death eaters and realising why they’re feared

“In my life, Oh, why do I give valuable time, to people who don't care if I live or die?” Regulus still caring about Sirius, even after Sirius cut all contact with him and their “family”

“What (s)he asked of me at the end of the day, Caligula would have blushed” James spoke to Regulus again, and Regulus was still in love with him

" “Oh, you've been in the house too long” she said, and I naturally fled” Pandora said she was worried about Regulus being in that house, the same time, which he was planning with the Horcruxes

“In my life, Why do I smile at people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?” Regulus to his “family”

“I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour. But heaven knows I'm miserable now” Regulus happy with his friends, and after knowing he was going to the cave

" “Oh, you've been in the house too long” she said. And I naturally fled” Regulus reciting what Pandora said to him months prior, and him finally leaving to go to the cave

“In my life, Oh, why do I give valuable time. To people who don't care if I live or die?”Regulus trying to trick himself into thinking no one cares about him, so he doesn’t feel so bad about leaving everyone

Hey Siri do I include more Olde Ways references and possibly religious elements to my Black Brothers angst? Asking for a friend.

Actually yanno what they get it anyways. It works with the whole celestial thing. Just pile on the agony with religious themes and motifs.

Regulus x Evan x Barty

Sirius x James x Remus

Omegaverse Soulmate au

'You're Lucky.'

The voice startled Regulus from his current task of playing with Barty's hair, who was dead to the world resting on his chest. Regulus stared at Sirius for a second, who was standing in the doorway of Regulus' room. He turned his attention back to Barty because he had grumbled in his sleep, subconsciously missing the hand in his hair.

The thing is, Regulus knew he was lucky. Lucky that his soul mates were both pureblood, Slytherin, and came from respectable families.

When he told his parents who his soulmates were, he swears it was the first time he saw his mother smile genuinely. It scared Regulus a bit how excited she was to meet Barty. She hadn't even entertained the idea of letting Evan come to dinner as well, apparently believing that more than one Alpha in the relationship would take from Regulus' own dominance.

The entire dinner was spent with their mother demanding when Barty would be producing an heir, and Regulus just wanted to scoop him up and forget that he even entertained the idea of this dinner, let alone gone through with it.

But he knew he was lucky as he pulled the omega just that little bit closer, who let out a content purr in response.

'You're Lucky.' Regulus found himself shooting back before grabbing his wand and flicking the door shut in Sirius' face.

Sirius made his way back to his room, mulling over the words spoken. 'You're Lucky.' Sirius knew he was incredibly lucky. Lucky to have two amazing partners. James, a handsome Alpha who fit all yet at the same time none of the stereotypes for Alpha's and Remus, a beautiful omega who never seemed to know his own worth and has in equal parts a sarcastic and kind personality.

Sirius was lucky to have soulmates that were nothing like his blood relatives that would support him, that would cherish him. He found that he didn't care that his parents didn't approve of his soulmates like they did Regulus', he had learnt not to care about their opinion a long time ago.

So yes, he was lucky.

Where does this idea come from that the Black brothers are all dramatic and theatric? Regulus writes sad poems and lies on the floor soaking in his teenage tears and sorrow, while Sirius makes up fancy insults and tries to look artistic, entertaining everyone around him.

None of what they did or said is really dramatic or theatrical.

Sometimes their words might sound a bit lofty, but that's because all the Blacks were raised in a family culture that was a bit "elevated". It’s not about them being "naturally" dramatic or theatrical; they’re brought up differently, part of a family culture where honour, dignity, and "knightly" behaviour are more than just empty words. As the saying goes, some are into painting, some into literature, and some into sausages the Malfoys.

So, it's not just personal; it's the upbringing imposed on the Black character. These attitudes don’t just appear out of nowhere; one isn’t born with them, yet all the Blacks (even Narcissa to some extent, and she’s got more guts than Lucius) have them. Honour means different things to them, but it is still honour. They all stay true to their ideals, what’s important to them, they are fearless, not afraid of death, and honest in their actions and thoughts. I think it’s more family than personal.

Both Regulus and Sirius are very focused on the concept of honour, though they see it differently. You could write this on their tombstones:

Mine honour is my life; both grow in one. Take honour from me, and my life is done. Then, dear my liege, mine honour let me try; In that I live, and for that will I die.

(I’m purposely ignoring whose words these are — it doesn’t matter here)

Regulus "I face death in the hope that when you meet your match you will be mortal once more"

And Bella "You should be proud! If I had sons, I would be glad to give them up to the service of the Dark Lord"

And Sirius "I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for..." and "THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED! DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS"

It's not about their personal theatricality; it's about how such people see the world. These people view the world through a lens where pride, honour, and dignity aren't just idealistic, they're real and ingrained structures that live within them. It's the morality of knights versus a utilitarian approach, choosing what's right over what's just beneficial.

The independence of the Blacks’ thinking leads to unique outcomes — each person has their own idea of what's "right."

Regulus isn't just a sad boy with poems, forced into a vile organisation, then betraying Voldemort out of immense pity and love for a house-elf. And Sirius isn't just an artistic dancer on the bar with witty insults.

Both Regulus and Sirius have very clear views of what's right and wrong. Sirius is incredibly brave, as is Regulus in his own way — joining the Death Eaters at 16 is brave and dangerous, but if it's the "right" thing to do, it's worth it. And if the "right actions" lead to the destruction of the entire line—well, you know... He writes such a letter believing he is dying with honour, in contrast to Voldemort, a dishonourable being who, indeed, views honour as nothing but an empty word. I believe Voldemort was quite adept at manipulating these notions of "honour" among some purebloods. Voldemort is utterly utilitarian.

The same goes for Sirius — his upbringing and ideals are mistakenly attributed to excessive drama and theatricality, as if he's some clown who deliberately makes up fancy insults and entertains the crowd by dancing on tables. This destroys the essence of Sirius, turning him into an aesthetic leech created for amusement and consumption (of attention, things, pleasures, etc.), and turning everything into an aesthetic object. Consumption and Sirius are completely opposite concepts. Nothing he does is for the Other; there's no theatricality in his actions, no fashion, no aestheticism for the sake of it, no consumption for the sake of consumption. Sirius is a man of Grand Concepts, as is Regulus.

"What are we doing, again?"

"Learning about the Unforgivable Curses," Evans says, "Do you not listen to anything the teachers say?"

"I try not to," Sirius shrugs.

"Well, come on," James takes Sirius by the shoulder, "Let's not be late."

They arrive at the classroom, somehow not being the last ones there. Sirius looks around the room and frowns.

"Why do we have to be with the Slytherins?"

"Because," Evans sighs, "that's how they've organised it. We can't change that."

"But-"

Sirius is cut off by the Professor. "Alright, class. Settle down and find the table with your name on it."

"We have assigned seats?" Sirius groans.

"I'm sure we'll be next to each other," James assures.

They weren't. In fact, the Professor made sure they were on opposite sides of the classroom.

Sirius walks over to his desk, and looks at the name of the person meant to be next to him.

"Hey, Professor!" He yells, "Can I switch tables?"

"No, Mr Black, I'm afraid not," the Professor groans.

Sirius doesn't even know the Professor, why is he so annoyed with him?

Sirius groans, but holds out hope. No one's sat next to him yet.

That hope instantly dies, however, when the door opens to reveal Barty Crouch and Regulus Black, coming in late.

"Mr Crouch, Mr Black, may I ask why you're only just arriving?" The Professor asks.

"Sorry, sir," Crouch smiles, "just got a bit lost."

Regulus elbows Crouch discretely, muttering something to him.

"Whatever you say," the Professor says, unbelieving, "please, find your seats."

Crouch, who is seated next to Mary, looks over at Regulus, smiling apologetically.

Regulus just rolls his eyes and goes to find his seat. He stops short when he does.

"Professor?"

"Enough. No one is switching seats," he says, already predicting what Regulus was going to ask, "Now, let the lesson begin."

Regulus and Sirius both sit very stiffly next to each other, trying and failing to ignore the other's presence.

"And lastly, the Cruciatus Curse," the Professor announces, having discussed the Killing and the Imperius Curse.

"Huh?" Sirius murmurs, "I thought we were discussing Unforgiveables."

Regulus just stares ahead, brow furrowed.

"The Cruciatus Curse, also known as the Torture Curse, is only used by the most vile Dark Wizards, wishing to cause their victims immense pain. It is of the most Unforgiveable actions of a wizard, and whoever uses this curse will be sent straight to Azkaban."

"Sorry, sir," Sirius puts his hand up, "I'm confused. I thought Cruciatus was like... for punishment or whatever? How is it Unforgiveable?"

"No, Mr Black, this curse is highly illegal, as it would cause, whoever is on the receiving end, life-long mental and physical trauma."

"That's not true," Regulus speaks up, seemingly without meaning to. "I mean," he says, more shyly now that everyone's eyes are on him, "it would be painful but not... not that bad, right?"

For a while, there is silence, making Sirius's skin crawl. He turns to his brother, hoping this is all one big joke.

Regulus looks back at him, just as confused, as the Professor speaks once more.

"I'm not sure where you've heard these false rumours, but please know that whoever is telling you these things are lying."

"No..." Regulus protests under his breath, his face going slack.

Sirius, equally confused, just puts a hand on his brother's shoulder, hiding his face as he tries to blink away his tears.

If their parents are willing to break the law to use an Unforgiveable Curse on their own children, then there really is no hope that they might love them, is there?

Its that realisation that makes Sirius stand, abruptly, and leave, to hide the evidence of his fears. And for once, Regulus follows, not to fight, but for comfort.

I was cutting tomatoes today and there was one that was slightly bruised so I shrugged and said, "A bit battered and bruised but that's okay, it just builds character."

And then I thought of Sirius Black

Regulus is a good liar.

So good, not even his closest friends can tell whether he's telling the truth or not when he's trying. No one can.

No one but Sirius, because Sirius is the one who taught Regulus to lie.
