Dear Star Trek Community,

Dear star trek community,

We are different, all of us. We come from everywhere in the world, we speak different languages but our love for trek binds us, our hope to one day see a world united drives us. Our hope that the united federation of planets will be real one day excites us. When the show talks about the federation and its principles I can see that in us. I know for a fact that if given the chance we would all make damn fine Starfleet officers.  Our community is our crew the trekkies we know, to the ones we haven’t met yet are our shipmates.

When someone says they don’t feel represented in this community I’ve seen us lift them up, to not tell them they are welcome but to show them, to help them that their differences are what make our crew the best. I know this sound corny or even crazy, but I know that all of see it. At times we don’t just watch the show we live it we break down barriers, explore new ways of thinking, to help each other in times of need, to come together to show that when people talk about the show of the future the future is in fact now (soon to be warp capable)

I say all of this because I’m proud of all of us, while I know there are people out there that want to slow us down take us back to old ways of thinking and doing things (HIGHLY ILLOGICAL!!) I am so glad to see all of us demanding to be at high warp for equity, equality, love, respect and understanding.

I want to tell the story of how I found my way into this community.

I am a science nerd because SCIENCE IS FREAKIN COOL!!!! Because of that when I lived a lot of the other kids didn’t like me and I got beat up a lot. After one rather bad black eye my mother had, had enough and took me home and let me watch TV. I can’t begin to tell you how bad I felt. I thought that I would have to give up my love for science and reading and just play basketball or football because that’s all the kids who looked like me did.

That was until I saw this show with this man in a gold uniform who looked just like me with a visor, just hearing him get excited about science and its potential, the fact that people relied on him for one of the ships pivotal functions, I knew that this was something that I wanted to be a part of, that this was me but old and on a star ship. That moment saved me, in so many ways, I’m now working on my BA in cyber security, I’m still a science geek, but it was that one moment, and the NCC-1701-D that brought me here, and all of you who got me to stay. Later I would find other heroes that didn’t know where around till later Nichelle Nichols, George Takei. However, it will always be Levar burton who will always be the one I feel closest to. (also, we share a birthday!)

Thank you all so much!

TDLR; You all are amazing, keep pushing for diversity so no more little boys like me have to feel like there is no room for geeky POCs!

HAPPY STAR TREK DAY!!!!!!! If you know anything about me I love Star trek TNG(the next generation) The NCC-1701-D is my ship, she brought me into the trek universe. When i was a little boy I used to get the crap beatin out of me by the other kids because I was black and I LOVED science, reading, and science fiction, and many many other nerdy things. One day after getting a black eye that was rather nasty my mother was going to take me out of the school i was in and move to a different neighborhood, she sat me in front of the T.V. while she went to go talk to the parents of the kids who kicked my ass. I was ready to give up on science, there were no black scientists no black people were nerds it was just me.....and then I saw a man in the yellow and black talking about how much he loved the ship he was on, how the engines were his babies. He was an officer, he was respected, and he looked just like me! Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) didn't just keep my love of tech and science and nerdy things alive, he thew into a dilithium chamber and hit warp 10! Just seeing someone who looked like me being respected for his love and passion for what he does changed everything for me! From then on I feel in love with star trek, and I'm so happy it led me to meeting  more people who look like me and have this same interest!!
