something that i've always found really funny is catra's s5 plot armor, or rather, design armor i suppose.

to start with, adora (and bow and entrapta) had no idea catra was with glimmer on the velvet glove.

so they rescue her, and surely her chipped outfit, which she's wearing, is the only one she has after prime discarded her former horde uniform.

but then we see her in the same pajamas that she wore in the fright zone, just without the horde symbol, and remember that adora's looks different.

in the next episode, she's wearing an alternate version of her previous red & black uniform, which there's no way could been packed on the journey to save only glimmer, and they wouldn't have cared about leaving replaceable clothing behind on the ship.

also another thing i want to point out is that the back of the torso is mostly removed, likely by catra's claws due to the fact it had the horde symbol on it and she was now part of the rebellion. but i'm not counting this part since it makes sense.

anyway, she gets a whole space suit made for her by entrapta, who, again, wasn't aware catra wasn't on etheria anymore, let alone would want to leave prime.

and here's a bonus just because i can't tell: was this cloak made with a place for her cat ears to fit into, or is she just poking through the original fabric?

overall, this isn't a plot hole and i don't actually care about these inconsistencies since it's not a serious issue, if one at all. but this has always been something i wanted to share with the fandom since i love details!

She-Ra Callbacks: “It Doesn’t Matter What They Do”

Hi everyone! Let’s take a look at one of the most important callbacks in She-Ra, “It doesn’t matter what they do.” This phrase is very important because it is a part of Adora’s and Catra’s childhood promise to one another. Just as Catra’s and Adora’s relationship and the status of their promise evolve over time, the context in which we hear this line also changes.

01x11 “Promise”: Chronologically, this is the first time we hear the phrase “it doesn’t matter what they do.” The scene takes place after Shadow Weaver hurts Catra, despite Adora’s efforts to prevent this. Finding Catra alone and upset, Adora makes a promise with Catra that they will protect one another, no matter what hardship befalls them: “You look out for me, and I look out for you. Nothing really bad can happen as long as we have each other.”

01x02 “The Sword Part 2″: In this scene, Catra confronts Adora and attempts to renew their promise to one another. Unfortunately, it seems that she and Adora have diverging perspectives on their place in the world. Despite Shadow Weaver’s abuse, Catra is content to remain within the Horde with Adora and rise through the ranks; she even describes the Horde as “home.” In contrast, Adora now sees the Horde as evil and cannot bear to fight for a malevolent cause, accepting her destiny as She-Ra instead. In this way, Adora breaks her promise with Catra.

05x03 “Corridors”: After years of conflict, Catra and Adora encounter a common enemy in Horde Prime. Catra regrets her past decisions and resolves to “do one good thing in [her] life” by saving Glimmer, who is Horde Prime’s prisoner. In doing so, Catra begins her process of redemption. Importantly, she renews her promise with Adora, in a self-sacrificing way. It doesn’t matter what Horde Prime does to her, but he will never get his hands on Adora. Catra  is willing to suffer if it means that Adora will be safe.

05x05 “Save the Cat”: Although 05x03 is the last time we hear a variant of the phrase “It doesn’t matter what they do,” it’s worth noting that Adora also renews her promise with Catra in 05x05. She isn’t willing to let Catra go easily, and she insists that she will take Catra home. Of course, in this case, “home” doesn’t mean the Horde: it means being together, which is what they both wanted all along.

i think it’s interesting how adora and catra’s different forms of abuse affect their outlook on humanity; catra doesn’t really believe that there’s good in the world as a whole and is in constant state of self-preservation so she doesn’t care to fight for what’s seen as morally right most of the show, adora has complete faith in world but none in herself when it’s not tied to other people & values pretty much any good civilian/person’s life over her own. she’s always willing to die for a good cause and puts what other people want above her own wants. they’re both very extreme but only grow from that as they come back together. catra remembers the positives in her relationship with adora and realizes that she always cared about her, then begins to do the right thing because while there’s bad in the world, there’s also good. she doesn’t have to shut herself off from everyone and align herself with an oppressive regime to be safe as there’s safety in connection and humanity. her relationship with adora isn’t perfect and bad things still happen but she continues to do the right thing and protect her + other rebellion members out of love and knowing that despite her own extensive pain, good still exists in people and etheria can and Deserves to be salvaged. after adora allows herself to fight for catra again and express her love she breaks fully the confines of her controlled destiny as she-ra. for the first time in the show she allows herself to consistently want things that aren’t related to her duty. and once she hears that catra loves her there’s a push to believing in herself once again as she doesn’t need to martyr herself to matter to other people, she can just exist as herself in order to be loved and that can co-exist with her love for the world and it’s inhabitants neither one coming before the other.

i’ve been struggling to come up w/ what disco elysium is about for people who want to get into it cause. it’s a post soviet depression simulator. it’s a bisexual man who has amnesia so bad he forgot what being gay means. it’s about that man having amnesia so bad because he tried to kill himself by going on a three day bender. it’s the funniest game i’ve ever played. it’s the most deeply profound game i’ve ever played. a central character to the theming is a big bug. i think fundamentally, disco elysium is a game about living in a world without hope and choosing to survive but that’s kinda hard to say when part of “living without hope and choosing to survive” also encompasses taking psychic damage and dying after a kid calls you a fag

Tbh the fact that Kim likes your karaoke no matter whether you pass or fail the check is touching in a way but also it’s so fucking funny how offended he gets on your behalf if u fail and no one claps for u. “These people wouldn’t know a good performance if it bit them in the ass.” “He really sang his heart out.” He’s like you fucking NORMIES just don’t get it. Even funnier that it’s not even really about you, bc if he genuinely didn’t like it it he’d probably be about as tactful about it as he is about shaving the mutton chops. It’s the principle of the thing. And then u add yet another layer of humor when u know Kim’s personal music tastes. Kim’s not a particularly artsy guy and his conceptualization skills are (at least in Harry’s opinion) “rudimentary,” but he’s also super mega ultra repressed and his release valve seems to be music. Specifically the loudest and nastiest most vulgar music possible. He loves ur performance bc u basically go onstage and have a breakdown set to music for two or three minutes and he’s like so fucking true bestie. Now THAT’S what a good performance should be. An honest display of torment for me the audience to live vicariously through. so yes he has a six year long total nervous breakdown over a divorce which does seem kind of unwarranted on the surface but the thing is that his breakdown wasn't just because of his fiance leaving him, it's because he's lived for four decades in this absolutely untenable state of being on the coattails of the revolution. the fact that dora even has the choice to pack up and fly away and leave behind the poverty and disability and addiction and misery and, as he imagines her saying, "leave him alone in hell forever" while he has no hope of ever leaving revachol or becoming anything more than what he is is what causes the breakdown just as much as her making that choice. and so that's why he sees her as dolores dei right, like yes it's because he deifies her but it's not just that, because dolores dei isn't just some ambiguous religious figure, she's specifically the innocence of moralism and the welfare state and interisolary travel. it's not dora that failed harry, it's the world that failed harry, and because dora was able to escape and moralism and the welfare state and interisolary travel were able to save her in a way they never saved him, he projects all the ways the world has failed him onto her. like harry has this breakdown because the woman he loved (rightfully) left him yes but also harry has this breakdown because he was born into poverty in a military hospital and he got polio as a child and never quite got better and all his childhood friends are dead of car accidents and drug overdoses and he's lived his entire life under a form of capitalism that allows for no self-determination, no political representation, no upward mobility. so when she leaves him it's not just a broken heart that does him in, it's the culmination of a lifetime of misery that he falsely blames her for because she was able to escape. you feel me. and that's why his breakdown is so insane and massive and disproportionate and that's why he sees her as god you feel me. like love did him in but capitalism killed him. right

I spent last night looking at Neocities sites and here are my takeaways:

There's a real push to keeping the internet weird, open and less corporate-driven -- info on bypassing paywalls, protecting your data, archiving web media and basic coding/tech literacy.

(I found one tutorial on how to make a pop up that detects whether someone has an ad blocker and suggests they install one if they don't! Love that.)

There's also resources on finding the kind of internet that isn't the default experience anymore - alternate search engines I hadn't even heard of, human-made link lists and webrings. (Webrings! Turns out they never went away!)

If any of that sounds interesting to you, by the way - sadgrl.online has a lot of it and is possibly the best thing on the internet????

The "90's web" aesthetic is really fun and nostalgic, but I particularly loved seeing some people bring the better parts of the "modern internet" into it. What if we had weird, eye-searing personal sites BUT with plaintext alternatives for accessibility purposes? CW for flashing lights and unreality triggers?

(Again sadgrl comes in with a lot of resources for making your website accessible.)

Most of all, I'm honestly emotional about all the sites I found that were like, "hi! I'm 14 and this is my website where I talk about stuff I like haha."

It's so good that so many kids and teens who never experienced the "old internet" are still finding stuff like this and making their own weird stuff! Not just because weird websites are more fun, but because these skills are being passed down.

Anyway it's great and who knows maybe I'll make my own site sometime to keep horror media recommendations or something.

I think if folks want to form a new and healthier intellectualism as a tide against a lot of the culture industries worst sins, we also have to freely share information. If you have access to an ebook, share it, if your professors have class readings spread them around, put your notes up online. Be free and willing to talk to people about questions they have, point to your sources, leave no barrier against learning intact. If we actually want to get people to think and look and listen we cant just "advocate" for change; we have to make it, too.

I hate white women so much like even their feminism is awful. All they want is the power to harm and kill people with impunity and get away with it the same way that men do. I mean, look at how they latched onto Gone Girl and Midsommar as the ultimate girlboss power movies! There’s no compassion in their fight for liberation from the patriarchy. There’s no love in it; they’re only concerned for how THEY THEMSELVES and women like them can wield power over those weaker than them. White women’s feminism is nothing more than shallow, self serving cruelty.

i have no idea how to do anything here but i love the concept of old people/aging because it can be both so good and so bad and so happy and so sad and i cry about that i hope old people get more help and attention because they deserve it
