Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, 2004 vs 2025
Found this article on the Brazilian painter Fábio Magalhães' hyperealistic oil paintings from his collection called Between Life and Death; I think they are very beautiful. I'll put just a couple of his works here but all of them can be found in the article that I've linked along with an interview.
"When I use my imagination to create what we could call metaphors of a body-image, I believe it deals with strategies that I use to bring the private universe and common sense closer to human nature. As I present these images in the painting format, I intend to draw attention to the actions, often incomprehensible, that man has been facing in various parts of the world, whether they are close, distant or in a virtual state."
Just rewatched my favorite movie the other day-- still 5 stars. I finally got my sister to watch it with me and she really enjoyed it, but now she won't stop quoting the infamous Italian scene...
"From out her eyes, wherever they may move
come spirits that are all aflame with Love;
they pierce the eyes of any one who looks
and pass straight through till each one finds the heart;
upon her face you see depicted Love,
there where done dares to hold his gaze too long."
From Dante Alighieri's La Vita Nuova, chapter XIX - 1293
Hannibal 2x08 - "Su-zakana"
Currently thinking about how Hannibal probably left the book of time equations open so Will could see cuz it was his way of apologizing.
And we see that Will sees it and looks away quickly. Maybe like it was too much for him to handle, Hannibal being sorry. Or he didn’t want to accept it. Or maybe didn’t think Hannibal set it up, and didn’t want to be caught looking.
And maybe that was the final nail in the coffin for him to realize Hannibal cared for him.
There's something about the way Hannibal says "Love" so plainly and immediately because that's truly what it is. The way he just breathes it out almost like a sigh, "Love," like he adores just saying the word when it comes in the context of Will. And the way the notes of the piano punctuate his words... It's said plain and simple, but in reality it carries so much weight.
It carries the weight of their entire relationship prior to this- betrayal and forgiveness and all... "bones and all." Loving Will gives Hannibal great joy, but it has also caused him great sorrow. Here Hannibal acknowledges that his love for Will is "beyond his conscious ability to control or predict," which mirrors his words from earlier in the episode:
"You cannot control with respect to whom you fall in love."
This scene has always stood out to me, and it's still one of my favorite moments. When I was doing my anniversary post series and came up with the idea to do the quotes for each episode, what I immediately thought of was this-
"Love. He pays you a visit or he doesn't."
I think it's safe to say Love has certainly paid Hannibal Lecter a visit.
Hannibal 3x03 - "Secondo"
Saw this on Reddit today
That look that Jack gives Will after Hannibal surrenders and says "I want you to know exactly where I am, and where you can always find me," really says it all. Like, oh yeah, he knows.
