I think a lot about the fact that Leliana and Sera were young orphan girls from working class families who were adopted by human noblewomen... how Leliana took to that life like a fish to water and Sera rejected it wholesale: the material excess when others have nothing, having pride in something you didn't earn but were lucky enough to be born into. But Sera being an elf meant her life with Emmald was never going to be the same as Leliana's with Cecilie. The music and etiquette lessons that carried Leliana are harsh reminders of a life that didn't make room for someone like Sera.
They're both religious but their faith leads them to the same conclusion: no one should be excluded based on who they are and no one is without worth. They're rogues who love pranks and teasing their friends, they love ✨️ WOMEN ✨️ and are vocal about it, they're willing to sacrifice themselves and gut their enemies if it means protecting their people. They're steadfast friends and devoted lovers. Leliana learned her archery skills from Marjolaine - a nobleman's sport, a game to mirror The Game, 'I made you, Leliana. I can destroy you just as easily' - while Sera learned by the sweat of her brow, practicing until the arrow hit its mark more often than not and her arms no longer shook. There are no tutors in back alleys.
Leliana forswore her old ways for the ascetic life of a Chantry sister (before taking up arms to defeat the Blight); Sera inherited Emmald's fortune and gave it all away to orphaned children despite herself being hungry and homeless, because Sera is kind and because the knowledge of where that money came from was more painful than the joy of spending it.
DAI x BG3 matchups I need to see. I’m not good at writing crossovers nor am I clever at all. This is very much non-exhaustive and very much not the end point of these characters’ potential interactions with each other.
Karlach + Sera + Iron Bull
The absolute chaos. The absolute CHAOS. A powerhouse. Putting aside Karlach’s demon heritage aside, she and Iron Bull tossing back tankards and swapping war stories as vets that have been dealt shitty hands but continue to chug along despite it. Karlach and Sera connecting over growing up mainly on the streets and having soft spots for little ragamuffins. Plus they all talk about women’s tits a lot. I feel Sera would find Karlach sexy and funny.
Wyll + Cole
Like Solas and Varric, Wyll would take to Cole because he recognizes Cole’s desire to help others, even if his methods are a bit unorthodox. He would recognize Cole’s soul as gentle and kind, and his efforts to atone for the murders he committed in the Tower as proof of his humanity. He will join the Uncle-Dad Duo and complete the Uncle-Dad Trio. Cole would gravitate toward Wyll’s goodness in turn, and probably tell Wyll that him making a contract wasn’t foolish because in the end he saved a city, and if that was his desire, then he committed no sin in doing so.
Solas + Astarion
The messiest shit can only occur, and my messy bitch self wants to see it. Watch as Solas’s upright and stiff demeanor utterly bores Astarion. Watch as Astarion’s selfishness, penchant for violence, and casual disregard for the well-being of others utterly pisses Solas the fuck off. Watch as Astarion yawns or interrupts Solas’s lectures with a “yes, yes, we get it” or the most dramatic eyeroll and overwrought “ugh”. Watch as Solas and Astarion immediately sniff each other out as liars and schemers from first jump and hold each other at a distance, the tension spiking at random moments early in them knowing each other where the other prods at their falsehoods. Watch as Astarion is dumbfounded by Solas expressing his condolences to Astarion upon learning of Astarion’s enslavement to his master, because how could a man who holds such reproach for him still manage to feel pity? ‘It is not pity, but compassion, which you are at liberty to reject. That is your right as a free man, just as it is my right to feel it.’
In the best case scenario, Astarion calms down eventually, teasing Solas but still treating him like that friend of a friend that you grudgingly admit is useful. I think a part of Astarion would find Solas’s penchant dislike of him funny.
Vivienne + Astarion + Dorian
We are all doomed. The haughtiness will be scarcely contained. Dorian and Astarion are definitely flirting. Fucking? Not sure. But definitely flirting and enjoying killing bad guys, playfully arguing over wine, snickering over Solas’s shabby dress.
Shadowheart + Leliana
Tools forged to serve a religious order? Check. Crisis of faith? Check. Subterfuge preferred? Check.
Lae’zel + Cassandra
Soldiers recognizing soldiers. 🫡 ‘Why are the men around me so annoying.’
Minsc & Boo + Cole
Cole might be able to understand Boo! If not his speech, then his little hamster feelings. Minsc might be wary of Cole for the information that he manages to glean from Minsc’s head, but his unquestioned understanding of Boo would probably smooth that bump in the road, right?
Solas + Gale
A friend remarked that Gale would remind Solas too much of himself (prideful, ambitious) and thus they would not get along. There is that. I think that Gale would get a small smile out of Solas every now and then with his quips, because Solas himself is clearly a fan of banter; Gale would provide more of the energy in the same way Dorian does with his and Solas’s more civil banters. Gale and Solas also both hold a great measure of respect and adoration for magic as a force, an element, a piece of entirety that is beautiful for its own existence. Not simply just what magic can do for them as wielders of magic, but what it is and how it does so much to enhance a person’s understanding and interaction with the world, as precious as sight or sound.
Minthara + Iron Bull
Oh she will have him cowed in a goddamn minute. Oh man. Oh no. ‘Yes ma’am’, ‘no ma’am’.
Minthara + Cassandra
Oh this would be so interesting. Disciplined, serious bulwarks with little time for silly little men—Minthara would share Cassandra’s frustration and lack of amusement with Varric, though Cassandra would consider her suggestions to maim him.
Solas + Halsin + Iron Bull
I see potential here. Iron Bull and Solas already have a dynamic of Iron Bull’s “I have a pretty good idea of who you are, and it’s a liar” toward Solas, while Solas grudgingly respects Iron Bull’s strength and mental acumen in the same way you would respect a very intelligent bear—do not draw attention more than necessary, but stand tall lest it smell fear. Halsin feels like a softer Iron Bull, a mediation between the two. Like Iron Bull, his stature and build belies a thoughtful and sharp mind. Like Solas, he sees everything as connected, feeding into the other as part of a system, and would too feel a sense of loss at magic and mundane being so dramatically split as it is in Thedas—an aberration against what is natural. Also like Iron Bull, he’s frank with his sexuality. I’m certain the two would swap stories over booze. The trio would be arguably the three most mature and experienced in a room in any given situation. Not only that, but Halsin is far more actively in touch with his heart and honest with his feelings than Solas or Iron Bull. The latter two very much care about their loved ones, but with Solas it is under the surface and with Iron Bull it’s mixed up in cultural trappings of romance not being a “thing” in his culture, and thus both struggle with their feelings. Halsin however is very much in touch. There is next to nothing obstructing what his head and heart wants. He listens to his heart and he follows it. Solas and Iron Bull could learn a thing or two from him, tbh
Also I feel like Iron Bull, Halsin, and even Solas have a bit of a brat tamer streak in them so there’s that
Also Astarion would outright reject the notion of drinking Cullen’s blood cuz it smells like battery acid.
Thinking about the mage rebellion and Fereldan. My main Warden is a Surana that sticks Alistair with the throne so I never really gave it much thought about why Ferelden's ruler would accept the rebellion.
But I replayed and something stuck out to me: Connor was frustrated about them being in Redcliffe. He asks how that could be seen to be a good idea. And honestly? Given that the Wardens rule Amaranthine and it's a major point of entry from the sea it wouldn't be that hard to have set Fiona's people there and gotten fewer side eyes by the locals. They're used to Wardens, mages ain't that weird in comparison. Especially after the Warden-Commander let a possessed corpse follow them home from the swamp like a lost mabari.
But Ferelden has a population problem. Lots of dead young men and women just at Ostagar, let alone the southern hills, the bannorn via the rebellion, and Denerim. And the survivors of the Siege at Denerim would have had high chances of Blight Sicknesses, there were probably epidemics following 9:31. That would have crippled the fighting population. That doesn't even count that a lot of the refugees who made it to the Marches and elsewhere never returned.
Redcliffe is the fortified gateway to Ferelden from the /Orlesian/ border. The same Orlais that certain powers (Gaspard) want to return to being an expanding empire.
Celene's hold was weak. Weak enough the Inquisitor could arrange to break it entirely.
The Chantry is primarily Orlesian and that would give the mages a reason to not want Orlesian control if it came down to Gaspard as Emperor bringing chevaliers back across the Frostbacks.
I don't think Ferelden took the mages in out of generosity. At least not entirely. I think they saw a chance to add a significant military force to their country if their gamble paid off - and that's why Teagan agreed. Unfortunately for the rebellion the Tevinter thing is a definite point of no return - the mages weren't loyal enough to their own cause, to where they were, to continue the risk of keeping them.

Gwaren chumlavi (norwegian brunost) - This semi-hard cheese is mild, a little tangy, and a little sweet. It is made on the island off the coast of Gwaren in southern Ferelden. Local cheese-mongers boil a mixture of milk, cream and whey until the milk sugars into caramel, giving the cheese its characteristic brown color. Local legend claims it was a favorite of the dwarves who traded with the outpost during the Divine Age. In recent history, it is a favorite staple in the diets of fishermen and sailors who traverse the Frozen Sea, as it travels well and can be sliced easily to add to bread or hardtack.
Ceodre (cheddar) - A hard, off-white cheese, named after the small village it originates from in the Highever region, where a number of caves maintain the humidity and temperature needed for maturing the cheese. Delightfully sharp in flavor, its popularity has let to its spread across the southern countryside and has become a favorite on Ferelden farmsteads. In Orlais, the cheese is similarly loved, but not wanting to be associated with the palate of dog-lords, the Orlesians claim the cultures originated in the caves outside Montsimmard and call it “grottes fromage” or simply “grottes” which translates as “cave cheese.”

How much canon info is there about Highever? I haven't been able to find much apart from: It has an alienage, is by the coast and makes a signature kind of cloth (wool industry?). How big is the city? Is it near/around Castle Cousland? Does it have a harbour? How big is the alienage and what is it like?
(Alright, for you I’m going to make this into an official lore post, because this is actually small and specific).
Disclaimer: All of this is completely canonical knowledge. Nothing headcanoned, there are sources for it and I’ve gathered from every source that I could. This includes: Codice (Highever, Construction Report: Brickmarks, ), Dragon Age Origins Ultimate/Collector’s Edition Prima Guide, Dragon AGE Core Rulebook. Nothing is headcanon and nothing is taken from an unreliable sources (i.e. Wikipedia).
Location
Highever is a Teyrnir in northern Thedas, one of the few that set on the Coastlands. It sets on the coast of the Waking Sea, west of Amaranthine, across the sea from Kirkwall and the Vimmark Mountains, and North of The Bannorn.
In the very center of the Highever Teyrnir, is Harper’s Ford, this area used to belong to the Howes of Amaranthine. However, during the Orlesian Occupation, Tarleton Howe sided with the Orlesians, Harper’s Ford was marched upon by the Couslands and Howe hung.
Highever is the name of a village in the Teyrnir along the coast, as well as being the name of the Teyrnir (all lands, holdings, and bannorns within in area).
Castle Cousland is located in the Highever Teyrnir, the exact location is unknown.
Highever possesses an Alienage, though the location of it is unknown.
There was a Silver Temple in Highever where Andraste’s Ashes were first held, before being moved to a secret location. Whether the Temple still stands in unknown.
History
In -165 Ancient, Andraste’s “sons” (Maferath’s sons were adopted by Andraste, though many tried to claim to be her birth son in order to earn leadership of the Alamarri tribes) sought to steal Andraste’s ashes from Highever’s Silver Temple and strengthen their claim to Chief of the Alamarri. The ashes were moved to Haven, but the location was never revealed and eventually lost.
Castle Highever, eventually known as Castle Cousland, was built in the Divine Age and was considered no more than an outpost to the Amaranthine Bannorn. The oupost was held by the cousins of the Howes, the Elstans until the Tower Age.
In the Age of Towers, Bann Conobar Elstan was murdered by his wife, Flemeth, leaving no heir behind. Cononbar’s Captain, Sarim Cousland, stepped up and took the land instead.
The Couslands would declare themselves an independent Bannorn from Amaranthine and start a 30 year war, until Highever was freed and owned southwest Amaranthine as well.
It wasn’t until the Black Age that Highever would be named a Teynir under Haelia Cousland, who would unite the nearby lords against the werewolves and earn herself the title along with their fealty.
4:80 Black, Orlais tried to take Highever in hopes to conquer Ferelden, in the first Orlesian Invasion. They would use Highever to supply their troops by sea. However, Redcliffe stood strong against the Invasion and Orlesian was forced to retreat, unable to pass into Highever.
During the Exalted Age, Eletha Cousland would fight Ferelden’s future king, Calenhad, to remain independent. She would lose, but Highever would remain one of two Teynirs and Eletha would remain their teyrna.
However, in the Dragon Age, the Couslands would be betrayed and Castle Cousland would be stormed by Arl Howes forces, the Cousland family almost completely wiped out. The only to survive would Fergus Cousland, who would be lost in the Korcari Wilds until after the Fifth Blight ended.
(Conditional: The youngest Cousland would also survive the attack and go on to become a Grey Warden, swearing vengeance on Howe.)
Highever would be relinquished after Howe’s death by the Warden and returned to the Couslands.
Fergus Cousland is the current Teyrn of Highever.

In my efforts to expand the Lore around Ferelden and it’s lands, I had a thought that got a little big and unwieldy but with @ordoachao (seidrthemes) amazing help, I’ve sort of managed it! This is a map of Ferelden with names of Bannorns, Arlings and Teyrnirs which you can hover over and read more about the area. I made it for me, so it’s for writing my Characters, but anyone is welcome to use it for Roleplay or Fanfiction as they like! It is as close to canon as I can possibly go, considering how slim the actual canon is, so there is definitely some of my own ideas and interpretations in here.
However, whilst I’ve written a whole bunch for a lot of the areas already, there are a ton of Bannorns that require addition and some of the places are lacking in detail. Magic is so vast that mages often put special emphasis or interest in a particular brand of magic. Sometimes this is because they have a natural affinity for it, or sometimes it’s just a matter of what their education is like.
Magic has its limits, but not many. Even still, those limits are pushed and broken—for example, World of Thedas vol. 1 stated that true teleportation is impossible, but in the Tevinter Nights story The Wigmaker Job, an elven mage does just that, transporting a room from one location to another. What we know of magic lore is constantly evolving, and when we talk about the fields of magic, or specialties if you prefer, there are only so many concrete facts and constraints.
In other words, it’s much easier to imagine whatever the hell you want. When looking at the principles of magic schools, I argue that the imagination should not be limited to in-game battle mechanics. For that reason, this post is not about just listing off all the specific abilities each school of magic can do, but rather, the concepts behind each school. The general principles. The ideas!

Today is 11/11 which marks 101 years of Poland regaining independence and I thought it is a perfect time to publish a post that I’ve been working on for a while.
This is a sort of compilation of my own thoughts I had while playing the games and various talks with my Polish friends. It is not supposed to force any ideas or teach others how to interpret the game. I just thought it could be entertaining for anyone interested in history and culture. I was trying not to elaborate too much on the subject here but it still ended up being A Very Long Post TM. To make this post a little neater to read, I divided this post into 4 sections:

So World of Thedas 2 comes out and more Currency Lore! Yay! Also I added on a lot to my old post and so I’m going to write/sort that out too.
Disclaimer: All of this is completely canonical knowledge. Nothing headcanoned, there are sources for it and I’ve gathered from every source that I could. This includes: The World of Thedas Vol.1&2, Dragon AGE (the tabletop RPG), Dragon Age Origins & Dragon Age 2 Game Guides, and a forum discussion with Mary Kirby & David Gaider (Information regarding Qunari economy). Nothing is headcanon and nothing is taken from an unreliable sources (i.e. Wikipedia).
Most of Thedas uses the same currency system, run by the Dwarven Merchants Guild. The Dwarves were the first to set and use the present currency standard; the Dwarven Merchants Guild refusing to accept any other currency, if it did not meet their specifications, and forcing many nations to convert to the new standard immediately.
Every nation and race within Thedas uses the same metals/basis for their currency, the standard fare being Gold, Silver, and Copper. Most of these come in the form of coins and their names and appearances vary country to country. Larger, more expensive transactions may be used in the form of bars (solid bricks) or strands (stacked groups), these seen used more between guild contracts or governments/nations than in daily commerce. For example: Hawke would pay gold pieces to buy new armor, while Varric would buy a new estate or make an investment in bars and strands.
1 Gold piece is equal to 100 Silvers which is equal to 10,000 coppers.
Or
1 Gold = 100 Silvers 1 Silver = 100 Coppers
However, prices do inflate depending on location. 5 Gold pieces/Sovereigns in Ferelden will buy you a meal (probably for 2 if you know where to look) and an okay cowl will run you maybe 10 gold pieces/Sovereigns, where as in Orlais a single ring will run you around almost 60 gold pieces at the least and a decent meal is probably around 50 gold pieces per a person.
The Imperial Highway
While the Imperial Highway (the trade route throughout Thedas) does not have it’s own currency, it does have it’s own practice related to currency. Usually merchants and travelers will carry Traveler’s Bends, Gold coins that are beaten curved so they can be hidden beneath the tongue. The practice is done to protect small amounts of coin (for emergency or bribes) from bandits patrolling the roads; however it is very easy to swallow or choke on the coin rolling around in one’s mouth. It is also a common case for Hunter Fell currency (containing lead) to cause a condition called “Miser’s Madness”, which is lead poisoning.
Ferelden
In Ferelden, Gold pieces are referred to as Sovereigns, Silvers are Silvers, and Coppers are called Bits or simply Coppers.
Orlais
In Orlais, “Gold” pieces are referred to as Royals; however due to different and more expensive lifestyles of Orlais, Royals are equal to 20 Sovereigns/General Gold pieces. Silver pieces are referred to as Crowns and Copper pieces are Bits (like Fereldans) or Pennies.
There are also the traditional Caprice coins of Orlais. They are made of very little gold and more often use low grade materials, as Caprices are made to be disposable. Most Caprices are decorated with a single family’s heraldry or a specific event. They are not used in normal economic exchanges, but rather in a party game at high-class, Orlesian, social gatherings. Nobles hand Caprices back and forth during parties, rewarding cleverness and grace. The Caprices are then thrown into a fountain at the end of the party or a fireplace in a more rural setting, for well wishing. Reusing a Caprice is thought to be both bad luck and a great embarrassment.
Serault
Serault has the same base currency as the rest of Orlais, but they do have a special coin. This coin is known as the Andraste’s Tear, a nonmetal coin that has the same equivalence as 5 Royals (or 100 Gold Pieces). Andraste’s Tears were made in a very small, limited quantity; created by pressing Serault glass together, trapping “the still of the air as they watched Our Lady breathe her last” (later discovered by a coin collector to be a waft of alcohol) between the slates of glass, and then a signet is pressed into the glass like wax.
Nevarra
Nevarra uses a coin referred to the King’s Gulder, it is implied this is their Gold coin as it is seen equivalent to the Fereldan Sovereign and Orlesian Royal. Another name for the King’s Gulders are Dragons. The term is both due to Nevarra’s culture association with dragons, and the naming of their Dwarven Guild/Enclave.

The Anderfels has a coin named the Double Griffon, it is implied to be their Gold piece as it is compared to the Fereldan Sovereign, Orlesian Royal, and Nevarran King’s Gulder.
Antiva
Antivan Andris are Antiva’s “Gold” pieces worth the same as an Orlesian Royal (20 typical Gold pieces), they are actually struck with the faces of leaders operating major groups within the Antivan limits rather than faces of their Royalty. For example one Andris appeared to be struck with a (familiar) Pirate Queen’s visage, one who operates within the Antivan seas.
Also 5,000 Andris are considered to be one Bastard, which is an offer used as an insult in business negotiations.
Tevinter
Tevinter uses a coin similar to Orlesian Caprices for their own gatherings, Imperial Tesseraes are tokens and/or tiles that are used as invitations and passes into certain events. The events can range from political meetings (like Magister congregations) to celebrations (name day parties) to competitive gathering or betting at said gathering (sport contests like Jousting) to private performance (of a famous bard/minstrel or celebrated play troupe). Coins are usually specially made for each event, depicting the event, a favorite athlete, an animal, or the subject/guest of the event. Tokens for a private performance are considered the rarest Tesserae to acquire and are highly sought by collectors. However Tesseraes lose value the minute the event or gathering has ended, since there is little interest in tokens of a rival’s family, success, and/or vanity.
Par Vollen, Seheron, Parts of Rivain (Qunari)
Qunari follow a completely different economic system that the rest of Thedas, as they do not have currency or a trade system. Rather Qunari run on a communist system. They do not own property; they do not trade, buy, or sell things amongst one another. Any example given by Mary Kirby:
“Merchants” in qunari cities have the job of making sure goods are distributed appropriately.
Because Qunari do not buy goods, the goods instead provided to everyone fairly and evenly. The “merchants” deliver the essentials to live, to everyone equally and the goods they need to perform their role/jobs (bakers get their flour for the day, farmers their seeds for the season, etc.)
Qunari do follow Thedosian currency out of curiosity, trading and borrowing with the rest of Thedas to interact with and explore the activities, behavior, and goods/products that come from the other nations. However, they do not actively participate nor adopt Thedosian economic standards among their own communities. It is unknown whether the currency they use to participate in Thedosian economy has special names like the rest of Thedas and are rather just Golds, Silvers, and Coppers.
