Grammar Lesson 4: 이/가 vs.는/은

image

안녕하세요! 환영합니다~

Hello! Welcome~ ⚠️CAUTION⚠️ Grab your pencils and papers! There’s a lot of info ahead!

This is a big struggle for Korean language learners and so, I decided to cover this confusing topic. I haven’t formally taught the particles ‘이/가’ because they have a similar function as ‘는/은’ BUT there are some differences that I will cover below!

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a message or leave a reply down below! Happy studying~

┌─                ・。゚: ∘◦☾◦。゚.                    ─┐

     L e s s o n   4  :  이/가 vs.는/은

└─                 ・。゚: ∘◦☾◦。゚.                   ─┘

Grammar Lesson 4: 이/가 Vs.는/은

는/은 is a particle that indicates which part of the sentence is a subject. Add 는 after the object if the last letter of the last syllable is a vowel and 은 if the last letter of the last syllable is a consonant.

e x a m p l e s :

Vowel: 그 옷은 비싸다. (That clothing is expensive.)

Consonant: 나는 예쁘다. (I am pretty.)

Grammar Lesson 4: 이/가 Vs.는/은

Add 가 after the object if the last letter of the last syllable is a vowel and 이 if the last letter of the last syllable is a consonant.

e x a m p l e s :

Vowel: 주스가 맛있다 (The juice is tasty.)

Consonant: 가방이 크다. (The bag is big.)

이/가 are subject particles that answer/ask who, what, and/or which.  Let me explain: If Person A asks:

A: “누가 먹었어요?” (Who ate it?)

We use 가 because the person is asking who ate it.

Grammar Lesson 4: 이/가 Vs.는/은

Let’s see what Person B answers Person A:

A: “누가 먹었어요?”  (Who ate it?)

B: “제가요.” (I did.)

BUT, what if Person C says:

C: “저는 안 먹었어요.” (I didn’t eat it.)

By using  저는 instead of 제가,  Person C shows CONTRAST, EMPHASIS, and DISTIGUISHMENT compared to Person B who said that they ate it. 는/은 differentiates his/her idea with Person C.

And…that’s it! Congrats, you made it to the end! 축하해요! 🎉🎉

If you’re new, I’m Alli and I make my own infographics to help you learn Korean with ease! If you’re interested in more of these types of lessons, visit my blog here!

P.S. What do you guys think of the new color theme?

College tips

I’m in college, no surprise there. I’ve had many experiences already in my 2 years of college. Let’s just say, chaos likes to follow me. I’ve passed, failed, been to the hospital, gotten on a first name basis with the dean, almost got backer acted, all that good stuff. So I have quite a few tips between balancing school and two jobs, recovering from failing, how to pass, when to call a class quits, etc. Some of these you may think I’m crazy for and that’s ok. Some like just giving up on a class or two may sounds stupid but believe me, when you work two jobs, are almost hospitalized, have family on the verge of death, one already dead, living an hour from school, and relying on a car that likes to work most of the time, there will be times you need to just quit. These tips may not be for everyone, but I’m sure that at least one of these could help you.

Find a sleeping schedule that works for you. Once you do, fit your classes around it, and work around your school. Trust me, if you put sleep second, you will never sleep enough and you’ll half ass all your classes.

Not only try to avoid 8AM’s, try to avoid classes that end at 9-10PM. I always here people advise against 8am classes, but never heard anyone advise against these. As a female getting out that late and walking to your car or dorm can be very scary especially on a college campus and that’s for good reason. It’s just not safe. Not to mention, you’ll get back to your place of sleeping and not be tired enough to sleep and probably won’t go to bed until around midnight at the earliest. Then cue next morning hatred for signing up for that class. Trust me, these classes are just as bad as 8ams

If the police want to talk to you, be honest and polite. The more polite you are, the gentler they will be and the less likely they are to threaten to arrest you as an accomplice or something. Just be honest and polite, but never compromise your rights. Ask for a lawyer but do so politely if it comes down to it. They hate talking to you just as much as you hate talking to them

Go ahead and hook up, but make sure your roommate(s) are fine with it and make sure to use protection. Don’t rely on plan B

Never let your drink leave your sight. Always keep it in hand and close to the front of your torso. Pass on the food at parties too unless you see it get delivered, opened, and served. People love getting people high and giving them drugs without their knowledge and consent as a prank

If you know you’re going to a place with alcohol, bring at least one friend you can completely trust even if you don’t think you’re going to drink

Don’t let someone talk you up and don’t fuck someone because you feel guilty

Make time to study. Put it in your calendar and don’t make plans for those times. Believe me, you’ll be so happy you did

Take notes in whatever way works for you. Study however and wherever works for you. Don’t be fooled into thinking there’s a correct way to succeed in academia. The only correct way is the way that works for you. Music? No music? Outside? Flashcards? In your bed? Whatever works my dude

Make your bed when you first get up. It will make your room appear more put together and if you do nothing all day besides that, at least you can tell yourself that you did do something worthwhile that day

If you’re sick, go to the clinic. Most campuses have free clinics where you can go and get seen for free or really cheap if you’re a student. Don’t suffer and be miserable

If you’re sad, cry. Be dramatic. Turn on the shower and start showering and then slowly slide down the wall as you breakdown hysterical over that breakup and just let the water gently flow over your skin as your tears blend with the drops spiraling down the drain. Trust me, you’ll come out feeling so much better while also wanting to die. But you’ll have more confidence and an easier time than you would if you tried to play it off like it didn’t bother you

Do stupid, harmless things like confess to your crush or tell that girl you think her hair is gorgeous. Go for a walk in the park and go out to your favorite restaurant alone. Buy the cheapest bottle of wine and drink it while watching a Disney movie. Live. Feel the rain fall and the sunlight wrap you. Feel the wind flow around you and the snow cover you. Feel the shadows cast down from the clouds and the ground beneath your feet. Pick that dandelion and make a wish or two or twenty. You could walk around in nothing but a snuggie and flip flops while drinking a piña colada from a coffee mug that says “fuck you” on it and I can guarantee you at least one person will think you’re a genius

Actually talk to your roommate(s) because you’ll be living with them for a while. Try to be on their good side. And if you really don’t like them, befriend your RA and bitch about him/her to them

Go bake something at 2AM

If you’re drinking and begin to feel buzzed, stop. The alcohol will hit you even more as the night goes on. No one does anything they want to talk about while shit-faced. Every drunk person becomes the person everyone laughs at and talks about for days. Save yourself the embarrassment and stop with a buzz. And besides it’s much better than a hangover

If you’re failing a class and you have no hope in reviving your grade, then don’t be afraid to drop it or just stop trying. In my chem 2 lecture, all three tests I took so far I got below a 65 on. I need a 72 to pass. There’s no way I would pass the class and I can’t drop it so I stopped going and studying and worrying about it. There’s no reason I should sacrifice efforts on a lost cause when I could put that energy to another class and excell in it.

Actually talk with your teachers. They control your grade, might as well get to know them and be on their good side. And trust me, not only will your grades be better, they may come in use later on

Don’t try to fix anyone. People have their problems and their own lives. You won’t fix anyone and you’ll just hurt yourself in the process

Be kind to people. If they piss you off, be even nicer to them. Trust me, it will be great watching them fume but not be able to do anything because you’re so nice and sweet and everyone loves you

Learn to cook real meals like chicken parmesan, shrimp alfredo, good chili, etc. They’re all really pretty simple with a little bit of practice and after a while, you’ll be able to make a delicious meal out of almost anything you find in your cabinets. I learnt how to cook at a young age and now if you just threw a bunch of random ingredients and some spices at me, I could definitely make due. This has come in handy so many times when all I have to eat is some pasta, a loaf of bread, chicken strips, and maybe a vegetable at the bottom of the fridge. I can work with that and not hate what I eat

Get off your parent’s taxes and get your own insurance

Go to the gym at least once. Even if it’s just to look

Try out some new hobbies like kayaking, painting, hiking, baking, witchcraft, writing, photography, cooking, sewing, etc. Many of these things will be useful

Learn at least one survival skill. Sewing, making bread from acorns, fishing, building a flotation device, whatever. It’ll make you look cool and like you have this whole life thing figured out

Keep your gas receipts and all receipts really

Spend cash

Learn about yourself

Record lectures when you can’t focus or don’t want to take notes

Avoid the tattoo parlor between the hours of 8pm and 10am to avoid a future regret

Talk to the people who no one else does. Befriend the outcasts. But if they do things you’re uncomfortable with, you can just as easily walk away

Don’t hang out with the person who gets drunk every weekend and smokes weed to get high and acts like college is a party every day. They usually get caught at least once or do something stupid that brings you down

Go to the beach at night when no one is around and the stars are out. Be safe though

If you don’t want to do something, don’t. You owe no one an explanation. They should respect your no and if they don’t, you don’t need them around

Don’t let someone get handsy with you just because they’re drunk. Tell them no if it makes you uncomfortable. Walk away

You are in school, your grades are important, but they’re not the end all be all

Start learning how to rely on yourself and yourself only

Avoid fights. They’re not cool and can land you in jail

People almost always have a motive

Spend time with your family and friends. The older you get, the older they get and the more likely they are to die. You never want to hate yourself for not spending time with someone

You are not to blame for someone else’s actions

You are responsible only for yourself and your actions. But don’t let that be an excuse to let someone else do something stupid

Take at least one afternoon every week to just have fun and pretend work and school doesn’t exist and you live in a perfect world

No one is perfect. Everyone fucks up. A lot. But it’s ok to cut people out of your life who fuck up. Never feel guilty for it

It’s ok to be picky

Don’t trust what people tell you. Fact check. Everything

Wash a dish after you use it and put stuff away when you’re done with it. Taking an extra 5 seconds will save you hours of stress and hate later

Turn your phone on do not disturb or on silent when studying for something important that you need to focus on

Take thousands of pictures of everything

Try to laugh every day

Do your homework even if you know the teacher won’t collect it

Constantly review past sections if you know the final will be cumulative

Keep your silibus for each class

Learn people’s stories. Not just the exciting ones. Learn about how their mother would wake them in the mornings as a kid. Learn about the silly stories they have. Learn about their scars, both happy and sad

Take care of your skin, teeth, hair, and brain

Change diets for a day

Find something that really excites you in every class you take

For everything you hate about yourself, find at least something you somewhat like about yourself

Happiness is just as much a mental thing as sadness. Find things that make you happy. Like the color orange or rain drops on leaves

Wear what ever the fuck you want. No one will care

Go to your classes even if attendance is not mandatory unless you could teach that lesson to everyone else in the class with 98% accuracy

Do things that make you happy and healthy

Make friends with people in your classes

You don’t need to be involved in 5 different clubs

You’ll only have a couple good friends and maybe one real friend if you’re lucky

Get to know someone who has a pet

Learn to respect yourself and your wants

You aren’t your parents or anyone else and you won’t have the life anyone else has

It’s ok to need a break sometimes. Just don’t give up

You are loved despite what that annoying brain of yours says. You are wanted and your friends care about you. And I do too

You matter just as much as anyone else does and if you’re struggling at all, you deserve help just as much as anyone else

You have a voice and a say. Use them wisely

This Is 4 Days Late But...

y’all, i know most mommy bloggers are usually absolutely vile, and the “wine o’clock” culture is so annoying, but really think about it: why don’t we talk about how alarming it is that mothers feel the need to constantly talk about wine, drink wine, buy trinkets that have quirky sayings about wine, and yet no one is concerned that maybe patriarchal marriage structures are contributing to alcoholism in women? why is it that, if a mommy blogger says she takes shots of tequila to get through her day it would be alarming, but having a wine tumbler that says “mommy juice” or “i wine because my kids whine” (a real thing i have seen online for purchase) isn’t… scary?

i just think we need to have conversations about how the structure of modern motherhood and marriage is maybe super harmful for women? and maybe one solution is to normalize men taking more responsibility in the home and as parents. this goes along with useless husband “jokes” where women chuckle over a bottle or two of wine (!!!) about how their husbands are so clueless and helpless. normalize husbands doing the cooking and dishes. normalize husbands taking part time work in order to care for the kids. it’s not about shifting power from husband to wife, it’s about deconstructing the need for power in the first place.

여러분!  오늘 어땠어요?

Everyone! How was your day? Here’s my second Korean grammar lesson! Let’s learn the subject particle ‘는/은’! If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a message or leave a reply down below! Hope you enjoy~

┌─          ・。゚: ∘◦☾◦。゚.           ─┐

Grammar Lesson 2: 는/은

A l l i   s a y s : Here are the rules. All you have to add 는 after the object if the last letter of the last syllable is a vowel and 은 if the last letter of the last syllable is a consonant.

The Full Potential Challenge

Ever wonder what your life would be like if you lived up to your full potential? Would your body be healthier? Your skin clearer? Bank account bigger? I think about these things all the time, and, judging my a previous post, you guys do to. Below is a chart designed to help all of us live up to our full potential. I’ve broken it down into time frames to help keep you from getting overwhelmed. Write the chart down and hang it someplace where you can see it all the time. I will be starting this challenge tomorrow, 9/8. I’ll check in with you guys every Sunday to track my progress. I have specific goals in mind for myself, and you guys should make some too! I really want to know how you guys are doing. Tag your progress posts with #sbfpc so I can track it and take a look. Let’s get to it!

EVERY MORNING

Stretch. First thing. Really give your body enough time to wake up. Touch your toes. Roll out your shoulders. Do not hit snooze!

Do your full skincare routine. I have mine detailed here, but do whatever works for you and your complexion. Be gentle and consistent.

Brush your teeth and floss. I used to be a big floss-skipper too, but you’d be amazed at how dig of a difference it makes. Rinse with a whitening mouthwash. I use one by Crest, and I notice a major difference in my teeth’s overall whiteness in just a few days.

Give yourself enough time to get ready. Whether you’re a wash-and-go kind of girl, or someone who spends an hour doing a full contouring routine before class (and either one is fine!), make sure you aren’t rushing. If you need to wake up a few minutes earlier than normal, so be it. Rushing sets an awful, stressed-out tone for the rest of the day. Allow yourself to be relaxed before taking on the day.

Eat something. I’m not going to say eat a big breakfast, because some people (myself included) just can’t eat in the morning. But you should eat, or at least bring a little something with you to work or school. If you can’t eat a full breakfast, grab a fruit! You won’t be as hungry come lunch time, making you less likely to gorge yourself.

Shower. You can do this at night, in the morning, whatever. Again, this is something you should allow some time for. I don’t wash my hair every day, but I do condition it every day (from the ears down). Scrub yourself with a delicious-smelling body wash. If you shave, make yourself as smooth as a dolphin, dude. If you don’t, then don’t and don’t ever ever ever let anyone make you feel bad or weird about it. When you get out of the shower, wrap yourself in a fluffy towel and totally slather your sexy self with lotion. Top to bottom. Do it as soon as you can post-shower so it can really sink in.

Put leave-in condition throughout your damp hair and comb it through.

Put on an outfit that makes you feel good! So important!

Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!

Take a look at your daily to-do list. Knock out the most pressing stuff first. Take pride when you cross things off your list.

Make your bed! Oh my god, make your bed. Do it. Do it. Do it.

EVERY AFTERNOON

Follow the “touch it once” approach. This is a truly life-changing thing. When a task is in front of you, no matter how big or small, just do it right then and there. How many times have you gotten a work email or homework assignment and thought, “Eh, I’ll do it later”? And then later never comes? Once something pops up, do it once. Squash it and be done. Cross things off your list and feel like a badass.

Try to go for a walk at lunch. Even one little lap around the block or campus will reenergize you like nobody’s business.

Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!

Be present. This is so hard for me too, but you have to make a major effort to be present in whatever you’re doing. Be engaged and plugged-in and just exist in the moment. Give 100 percent.

Be friendly to friends and strangers. A smile goes a long way.

Eat something. Eat what you packed for lunch (see below) and take a break from working while you do it. You need “you time”!

EVERY EVENING

Take your makeup off as soon as you’re in for the night. Wash your face with your full routine and let your skin have a break.

Workout. You can also do this in the morning. Whatever works for you. Make a great playlist and go hard af. Get your cardio in. Get your strength training in. Earn every freaking sweat bead forming on your forehead. Earn your shower!

Knock out your homework. Life is infinitely better you don’t have anything hanging over your head. Half the time, the energy and emotion you spent dreading/putting off your work is ten times worse than the work itself.

Make a list of what needs to be done tomorrow. It’ll set you up for success the next day, and you won’t forget anything!

Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!

Lay out your clothes for tomorrow. This will save you SO MUCH TIME in the morning omg I can’t even tell you how important this is.

Eat something great. And once you’ve decided to be done eating for the night, be done. Brush your teeth so you can’t eat again.

After brushing, do a whitening treatment. Whether it’s classic baking soda, a Crest white strip, or a laser. Do something. And floss! Retainers in too, ladies 0:)

Relax! Take a few hours to do what YOU want to do. Scroll through Tumblr, binge on some Netflix, FaceTime gossip with your friends, anything. Do whatever makes you happiest.

Shut the electronics off an hour before you want to go to bed. Put your phone on sleep mode. If you stare at the screen, it will keep you awake and alert and you won’t be able to fall asleep. A good night’s sleep is crucial for weightless and general happiness lol

Do a quick sweep of your room and see if there’s anything you can put away real quick. A clean space is a happy space.

Crawl into your bed (aren’t you happy you took the time to make it?!) and read a book by lamplight for a while. When you start to feel sleepy, go to sleep. Don’t push it. You kicked ass today and you deserve rest.

EVERY WEEKEND

Do something with your friends. It just has to be one thing. Even if you’re just hanging out at the coffee shop, spending time with your squad will make you a better, happier person.

Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!

Do something just for you. Set your laptop up in the bathroom and watch a Netflix marathon while you take a bubble bath. Buy an old school bottle of Mr. Bubbles ($3 at Target!) and really just soak. Relax. Light a candle.

Do something creative. You can read a book, write, blog, draw, code, anything. It just has to be something that speaks to your passion.

Track your progress. Just do this once a week so it doesn’t become all-consuming. And remember that non-scale victories are just as important as shedding pounds.

Take the time to be grateful. Tell your friend how much you admire her taste in music. Mention to your mom how much you love her cooking and how happy you are that she takes care of you. Thank your teaching after an especially interesting lecture. When you do something awesome, take a moment to admire yourself. Be grateful for even the little things.

One Of My Majors Is English, So I Do A Lot Of Reading. Having To Read An Entire Novel Each Week Is Rough,

One of my majors is english, so I do a lot of reading. Having to read an entire novel each week is rough, but it really helped me refine my annotating methods. Here is how I annotate fiction and nonfiction books!

FICTION

1. MAKE USE OF THE BLANK PAGES IN THE FRONT OF THE BOOK

I’m someone who has a lot of trouble with keeping track of characters, especially if there are a lot of them. To remedy this, I use one of the blank pages in the front of the book to make a list of each of the characters, and sometimes I’ll write something about them so I can place a name to a character. Here’s a quick example:

image

2. USE HIGHLIGHTERS AND ASSIGN MEANING TO THE COLORS

If you aren’t someone who likes to actually write in the book, you can obviously use different colored post-its for this instead. I typically use three different colors when highlighting, and this is what the colors mean for me:

Pink - Character introductions: I use pink to highlight any time a character is introduced for the first time. You will often be asked to write about characters’ personalities, so this makes it easier to find descriptions of characters later.

Green - Important plot points: I use green to highlight any important things that happen that I think I’ll need to look back at.

Yellow - quotes: I use yellow for important quotes, or anything that is important but doesn’t fit any other category.

Extra - Purple: After you finish reading a book, your teacher will usually point out important passages too. When this happens, I use purple to highlight those sections to denote that my professor found them important, because this probably means they’re worth talking about in an essay.

3. WRITE A SUMMARY AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER

To make sure you really understood what you just read, it is a good idea to write down a brief summary on the last page of the chapter. This helps with remembering what you read, and it also makes it much easier to go back and find events in the plot that you want to talk about.

4. POST-ITS FOR ESSAY IDEAS

I’ve pretty much had to write an essay on virtually every book I’ve had to read in both high school and college, so I’ve made a habit of using post it notes to bookmark pages with content that would be helpful in making arguments in an essay. Make a short note on the post it so you remember what point you were planning on making with that passage. *This is especially helpful for timed essays during which you’re allowed to use the book as a resource. That way, you can have essentially your entire argument planned out ahead of time.

NONFICTION

I use similar methods when annotating nonfiction, but instead of paying attention to plot points, I try to focus on main arguments and ideas.

1. USE A BLANK PAGE FOR SUMMARIZING

Like with fiction, I like to use a blank page at the front of the book to summarize different sections of the book. This makes it easy to remember all the main ideas without having to flip back through the entire book.

image

2. HIGHLIGHTING AND WRITING

When I read nonfiction, I care much less about color-coding my annotations. I typically just use whatever I have around me at the time. What really matters about nonfiction is making sure you really understand the content, so I write down summaries in the margins on nearly every other page.

image

As you can see, there’s a lot of different colors going on. They mean nothing. Honestly, my yellow highlighter was just going dead so I was going back and forth between that and my purple one. The red pen was the one I was using during my initial read-through, and the second time I read these pages, I just happened to have a blue pen, so don’t worry about the colors.

Anyway, what is really important about this is my short summaries in the margins. Doing this not only helps you dismantle the arguments being made, but it also forces you to become an active reader.

3. ACTIVE READING

Like i just mentioned, engaging with the book by writing summaries frequently makes you an active reader. It is difficult to get anything out of a book if you aren’t actively engaging with the material, especially if it’s nonfiction. To fully understand the ideas being presented in the book, you need to find a way to actively engage with it. You can do this by using my ‘writing summaries in the margins’ method, or you can do whatever it is that makes you really focus on the content of the book. Anyone can zone out and look at words on a page, but if you want that A, you need to really dive into the book!

Korean Emphasis 아주 vs 너무 and others

it feels like these two words are interchangable but then I wondered if they’re similar to “many and “much”, with similar meanings but used in different contexts. so I had to look it up and it seems theres is a bit of nuance to them!

매우: very 아주: very, completely, a lot, a step above 매우 너무: too, or excessively 완전: completely 정말: really, truly  진짜: really, genuine, more informal than 정말 (but not by much) 되게: (not to be confused with 되게하다 which comes from 되다) strongly, so much, very much

너무 is typically used is negative situations (too expensive, too spicy, etc) and 아주 is used with positive situations. Now people have started to use 너무 positively or sarcastically like how you would say “shes too pretty” its framed negative but its a compliment and positive, this is more casual and close to slang so its used like this in informal contexts

the difference between 정말 and 진짜 isnt much theyre pretty synonymously used it seems but 정말 means more being truthful (정 for truth/right 말 for speech) and 진짜 is means like genuine (진 from 眞 for genuine 짜 for a thing) so I guess you can think of it along the lines of ‘for real?’

Back to School: How to Get an A*/8 or 9 in an English Lit Essay!

Back To School: How To Get An A*/8 Or 9 In An English Lit Essay!

Happy September, everyone!

As we all get our gears in motion to start a new year, I thought I would share my top tips for scoring the highest marks in English Literature essays.

(P.S. Lots of these tips are applicable to other subjects too)

1. Don’t write about the character as if they are real

Unfortunately, this is a common error in English Lit essays. It is absolutely imperative to remember that a character is not a person, but is a construct of the writer in order to present an idea or theme. No matter the question, you should be linking your answer back to the writer’s ideas and theme of the text, even if it doesn’t seem obvious what the theme is on the first inspection of the question. Using the author’s name frequently in your essay will demonstrate that you recognise the character is not a real person - ‘Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as a tragic hero, as defined by Aristotle as…’

2. Don’t analyse the plot

Avoid analysing the plot or when things happen in the text. Don’t write ‘When X happens it makes us think Y’. Instead:

Analyse the writer’s use of language, structure and form to create meaning

Do a close language analysis of specific words/phrases, including a sound analysis (plosives, assonance, etc.)

Do a structural analysis of what happens when and why that’s important (Freytag’s pyramid)

Do an analysis of form (stage directions, dramatic monologue, etc.)

3. Keep your answer relevant throughout

You need to be explicitly answering the question - not going off on a tangent nor trying to change the question to suit an answer that you want to write. One way of avoiding this is by starting each paragraph with a topic sentence, summarising what that paragraph is going to be about and how it answers the question. Another method is simply by rewording the question into your answer at the start and end of every paragraph. At least. For greater impact, include synonyms of the word, which can also help with the readability of your answer.

4. Avoid PEE/PEEL/etc. where you can

Thousands of students are taught the same, basic Point-Evidence-Explain (or variant) analytical paragraph structure. If you want to stand out, show academic strength, and achieve the highest marks then you must break free from the chains of PEE! (This also applies for your introduction format. ‘In this essay, I will argue…’ gets pretty dull after reading it 100 times)

For my students, I will be teaching them to write What-How-Why paragraphs:

WHAT has the writer done?

HOW have they done it?

WHY have they done it/is it effective?

This way, your focus is always on why the writer has chosen to use that specific language/structure/form, but it allows you to be creative in crafting your response. Being able to discuss the ‘why’ of literature is the key to unlocking the highest grades. Reading through examiners’ reports this summer has made one thing clear - it is not enough to merely spot linguistic devices or structural features. You must explain why the writer has chosen them and why that is an effective choice (or not).

5. Avoid sweeping statements about context

The main advice here is to only include comments about the context of the text if it adds to the analytical point that you are making. They should not be a bolt-on sentence, but they should enhance your answer.

Further, sweeping claims like ‘All Jacobean women were oppressed by society’ is far too vague. On the other hand, a comment like ‘Lady Macbeth is a disturbing example of womanhood because she denies her gender at a time where the role of a woman was clear-cut, even patriarchal, in Jacobean society’ suggests that you have a greater understanding of how context can influence the writer’s choices.

6. A plan is your best friend

Always, always make time to plan your answer. A method I recommend is, first, circling the key words in the question (character/theme, what you are asked to do, where in the text you are asked to look, etc.). Secondly, write all of your ideas down onto the page, highlighting parts from the extract if you have that in front of you. Finally, select a judicious number of points that you are going to talk about (quality not quantity here) and number the order in which you are going to make them.

If you are writing a comparative essay, each paragraph must start and end with a comparative point about whatever it is you are comparing (characters/themes/etc.) I suggest the following format:

‘X is presented in both text A and text B. However, in A the author uses device 1 and 2 to demonstrate X. On the other hand, in B, the author demonstrates X via use of device 2 and 3.’ Then write one paragraph for each text. Repeat this again for another similarity. And again for a third - if you think that is appropriate.

I really want a language learning partner where we just choose a random language and are like “hey sure let’s lowkey learn this bad boy” and together we become conversational in Lithuanian or something and it’s stress free and great

this is probably an unpopular opinion but i’m excited for bangtan’s collab with halsey.

she’s supported them for a long time now and i don’t think she’s using them for clout like previous western artists have.

i know she’s been problematic in the past and it’s not my place to tell people how they should feel about that, but she’s human and i believe she’s grown from her mistakes.

as a mixed, openly bisexual female artist who has spoken out about her experiences being bipolar and who continuously and consistently writes meaningful songs regarding her own personal struggles with relationships, fame, and her own self-image, i’m excited for what she and bts can bring to the table.

i just get annoyed at how quickly certain bts fans “cancel” other celebrities (especially female celebrities) at the tiniest whiff of something problematic and then bash bighit’s collab choices.

we’ve already established that members of bts have done problematic things in the past, but we forgive them because we recognize that they’ve matured and learned from their mistakes. but y’all can’t do that for halsey? ok.

listen to her less mainstream music and get back to me on how she only writes stupid tumblr teeny-bopper songs. songs of hers such as gasoline, control, hurricane, empty gold, and selfie have really helped me through hard times and i believe at her core, halsey is an artist who puts a lot of care and meaning into her songs, and who is also interested in being an advocate for her communities.

hearing bad at love on the radio?? where halsey openly sings about having dated men and women?? on the RADIO?? MY BISEXUAL ASS WAS SHAKING!!

but some of y’all are so caught up in bashing her that you can’t even recognize her good qualities, huh?
